a friend of mine was really late in submitting his tax return this year (just sent it in a month ago). he was wondering if he will recieve credit for the gst/hst checks that he has missed and whether he will recieve interest on the amount he is owed for his return
i told him i would ask here, because there are some knowledgable people here who may know the answer

hahaha, interest form the government...NINE!
They love to charge you interest when you owe but no way will they pay you interest on a refund. This is the Government were talking about here.
Realistically everyone who pays taxes could demand a refund since every fiscal year we pay taxes on our first and every subsequent paycheck but don't recieve a refund until +12 months later.
He should get his GST credit no problem, they owe it to him so they have to pay up.

Interest is paid on refunds after 30 days from the day you file your return, or from April 30, whichever is later. So if your friend filed his return on November 30, he will receive interest if the refund is not received by December 30. Keep in mind that any interest you receive is taxable in the year you receive it, and if it is the government paying it to you, they are pretty good at checking to make sure you report it on your next tax return.
