Is there some sort of inexpensive way to get to Manhattan from LGA, like an airport shuttle or something similar?

Are you going to a hotel? Most hotels will have shuttles, so you can check with them.
Also you might be able to get specials from whereever you get your plane tickets. I booked my flight to LA through expedia and got a voucher for a shuttle to and from the airport/hotel for $18 each.

This is basically a do-it-yourself trip. I'm staying with a friend and booked on Westjet's website.

I travelled to NY's Laguardia airport about 10 yrs ago and there was a $15 bus ride from the airport to Manhattan. It was like a greyhound bus and it was nonstop. It went through one of the tunnels to get there.
Landing in Laguardia is scary man. You can look into the windows of buildings very closeby as you are about to land. The runway is very short and ends abruptly at the water.

LOL try coming at the runway from over the water, it's even worse, you touchdown just as you see land, it’s like a thrill ride. ;)

HA HA, my friend just came from LGA to YYZ yesterday on WestJet
3 hours delay due to weather, man
1. SuperShuttle ($20 USD)

I took it once from hotel to JFK, wasn't too bad
2. Metro M60 Bus <-- I recommend this
Between LGA and Columbia University for $2 USD, then you can get subway for another $2 USD -> Total: $4 USD
Takes about 45-60 mins each way

If you use a Metrocard, transfers between bus and subway is free within 2 hours of the initial swipe. I don't recommend you doing this unless you know NYC and know what you're doing and travelling light. Just pay the $15-20 and take a cab.

You won't get a cab for $20 in a city like NYC. A $20 fare would probably get you to a destination that was in walking distance.

Everywhere is within walking distance if you have enough time

Medallion taxi cabs are required to give a flat rate from the airports to boros. You're right about the rates though, it's more like $35-40 to Manhattan. I under quoted since I don't take cabs much. The meter rates and fares went up a couple of years back.

Flat rate of $45 from JFK to anywhere in Manhattan (tolls included)
Ha ha, $2 M60 is still the cheapest way to go, probably not if you have lots of luggages
