Nothing really new.

I've been telling American freinds that for years.

The fact is that USA is hated nearly every where in the world. So if an American would to go backpackingin Europe they will get much better service if they tell people they're Canadian. If they say they're Americans in some countries they will get treated like crap.

They have been doing it for years.. Someones just capitolizing on the idea.

Ultimately, it makes no difference. People in Europe can tell within an earshot.

Its not a matter of whether you are from Country X.. Its how you treat the people whose country you are visiting, and you must realize what you do over here, might be considered improper etiqutte over there.

That's not true in all cases.

For instance with customs.

For instance I have a dual citizenship USA and Canada. I assure you that if say I flew to some European country and told them I was a dual citizen that I would get treated much worse had I just said Canada.

Though of course I would never do that as I don't carry anything to prove my dual citizenship. So I'd just be shotting myself in teh foot. ;)

What's the point? It'll be so obvious to anyone they see/talk to on their vacation that they're American.. just like n00bs on forums :->

(joke.. take no offense, please)

To balance out the karmic scales; everyone reading this thread and about to commit an indictable offense, please do so wearing an American flag.

I have travelled quite extensively, and I always cringe when I see the Canadians decked out in their Canadian patches, roots clothes, "I am Canadian" hats T-shirts, fanny packs, etc.

I know its so people don't think they are Americans, but you don't see Belgians decked out in case people think their French, or New Zealanders for Aussies. I think its just that Canada is a little insecure in the shadow of their neighbour and have to show everyone their Canadian. Just be yourself, if your loud and obnoxious people won't care what country you come from - they still won't like you.

Belgians don't get killed by terrorists just for being Belgian. Insecurity, yes - but not the way you're thinking.

I NEVER plaster Canada on any of my clothing. Just be yourself, if they ask, tell them, if not. Let them assume.

But anyone should be able to tell within a few minutes if they are Canadian or American.

Just listen to the way they talk eh?

Well, I am an Asian... no matter what no body would think I am a Canadian at first glance. Good thing is, no one would think I am an American either.

It is quite easy to figure out who's a Canadian. Before I reside here, I have been in both countries. The Americans, no matter west coast or east coast, southern or north, are just rude. Canadian people are always polite, SO polite that you cannot believe it. Now I have moved here, everytime I visit my relatives in the States, I have to remind myself to be careful in a country where people can shoot you with a gun...

I spend alot of time in the US and have always found the people for the most part freindly and polite. Although I'm white so that could be the difference(although it really depends on the area you visit). Visiting New Jersey compared to Oregon will produce very different attitudes.

So only in the US can you be shot with a gun? You could be shot just as easy in Canada for doing the wrong thing. It's not like Americans just roam the streets with assault rifles just waiting for someone to say the wrong thing.

France is the exception to the rule, they're just rude to everyone.

I guess I will carry my passport in any situation. I don't speak French at all, but yet I am a Canadian.

As for the gun thingy someone pointed out above... I haven't seen a gun in Canada yet. However, in my first time driving to Seattle I saw a guy with a gun pointing at his head on the road crossing an intersection, with tons of police cars chasing him. It happened about four years ago, and made it to some news paper there...
