Does anyone know if I rent a car from Enterrise or Discount or Budget, will they let me drive it down to the US?
How does that work?
THanks!!!

They will, you just have to let them know for insurance purpose.

It really depends on the location and the closest American state. Not one company in Niagara allows it because of the NY state insurance laws but we've heard that some companies allow it out of the GTA. We were able to rent in Seattle and drive to Vancouver though. You need to phone local offices of the different rental companies and check. We found the 800 numbers not very helpful unless they put us through to the local office as each office can set their own limitations...

You have to tell them before hand - because they typically give unlimited mileage, but state it's only for travel within the province.
It shouldn't be a big deal, my friend did it to take a 2 week US vacation when he didn't feel his 87 Tempo was up to snuff

Yes, I've done it many times. Just let them know ahead of time (you may have to pay more insurance) and make sure you get unlimited kilometers because going on a long road trip, they pile up fast.

I just called Enterprise, and they have no problems with anyone taking the car to the US, the only thing not allowed is if you're taking it to NYC or New Jersey area. Outside of Ontario, only allowed 200km/day.

rent from Hertz or Avis, they usually don't have any geographical restrictions (they will just put a note in your file), and generally allow unlimited mileage on most of their vehicles.

This was three years ago now, but i did a road trip out west, started in Vancouver. Rented from Sears Rent-a-car (not from the airport). They worked out of Budget offices. Could go out of province, or out of country, as long as you didnt go to Alaska or Mexico. I was under 25 at the time, and I was able to rent a car for $250 CDN per week + $5 per day for an extra driver on the insurance (we only needed basic insurance since my credit card covered the rest, i got the credit card a couple months earlier just for this purpose). The best part, unlimited KM's. UNLIMITED! Might want to check them out if they are still around wherever you are renting your car. Great cars, great service and great prices.
As a side story, you should have saw the sales persons face when i returned the car. I was given a fairly new Neon, with around 13k kms. My trip started in Vancouver, then up to Hudsons hope, then to Edmonton, Calgary/Canmore/Banff, Vancouver, Seattle, San Fran, Lake Tahoe, Yosemite, Joshua tree, LA, the up the coast back to Seattle, ferry to Vanvouver Island, Nanimo, then finally back to Vanvouver. When i returned it, the car had 28k kms. They werent very happy, but hey, unlimited is unlimited (i made sure of that, there was no cap on it).

Just out of curiosity, if they don't have any geographical restrictrictions, why do they need to put a note in the file??? Do they make you buy insurance or something?

Not sure, could be for accounting/customs purposes. I have never been charged extra for insurance or mileage whenever it has been noted.
