Why are we not allowed to request pms for links to certain material not permitted on this site?

Graphic material is not allowed to be posted on this site so the links get removed. Mods then say to pm the user for the link.

What is the difference here?

I don't understand the question. What material?

I think he's referring to the soopanova thread.

I think he's referring to the soopanova thread.

In that case, it would be because the links would be to sites that supply illegal material.

"What is the difference here?"

It is a private exchange, then. The site is not implicated.

yep, you wouldn't want RFD shut down because of allowing people to post warez links right? ;)

private messaging on a larger scale is no difference than simply posting the links

if you really want to share links, there are other forums that allows it, but the RFD crew just want this place clean because they're running a business here

One of the reasons is very simple. Anything posted on a public thread can be indexed by crawling search engine bots. That’s why many places never say the real names (ex. Micro$oft, Supvanova) so that forums like RFD are never associated with such websites.

I’m sure it wouldn’t go well if an RFD thread became a top 10 listing for the term Supvanova on Google.

Yup. You can also be threatened by a mod to have your account banned also for requesting pms... true story.

Most RFDers are smart. If their links/pictures in a thread got pulled, check their profile and goto their personal webpage. More likely than not, the link/pictures are posted there.

PM begging is pretty annoying if it gets on a large enough scale. There are several thousands of members on this board... imagine 1% of them PMed you for a link. that's at least 20 or 30 people asking you for the same thing over and over again.

I know what you mean, i mentioned that i have the scans of the futureshop and boxing day flyers on my computer yesterday and i have got over 40 PM's today. I will probably get more because of saying it again, but i am just ignoring them anyway.

Wow! I have to change what I said.

According vBulletin, there are over 19,000 members. I'll hastily assume only 50% of those members are real/active, giving us 9500 members. If 1% PM you for link, that's 95 PMs in one day.

This place is getting way too big. Soon we're gonna have to have Vancouver Forums, Toronto Forums to localize the content.

completely OT but it was two years to this day that the forum crashed from an overload of users! 220! Because of the Logitech giveaway! That's your trivia for today.

The rules are the rules. I suggest that anyone who is trying to get around them think twice.
