What do you think was the best game of 2004?

Can I pick more then one? I had a hard time picking between MGS3 and GTA:SA.
Is it fair to compare games from different platforms?

I think you should group the games in different genres.
For best racing: Need for Speed Ungerground 2
For 1st person shooting: Half Life 2
For RPG: I don't Play it
For Real Time Strategy: Was WarCraft 3 this year?
For Best Sim: Don't Play
For Best Sports:
And not only that, but I think you need a category for console as well.

It's hard to say what's game of the year is when they're not available to everyone (ie. all platforms.) Mind you, find very few games that's available for all platforms.

There are several games I haven't yet had a chance to buy or play, such as Half Life 2. But my vote goes to GTA San Andreas. Despite crummy graphics, the game is huge, sprawling, feature packed and just plain fun, with awesome music and many new things to do.
SA is an improvement over Vice City in every way except for perhaps the voice acting - after all, it's hard to top Ray Liotta. But SA truly is the best game in the GTA seriest thus far for the following reasons:
-Gameplay Additions-Climbing, Swimming, Dancing, Street Racing, Gambling, playing arcade games, and more
-RPG like depth-you can change your clothes and body type. You can work out, get muscular but run slower. You can stay skinny and get made fun of. You can just be fat and lazy. The more you swim, run, shoot etc. the better you get at it. You can woo women, or influence gang members.
-the cities are huge and varied. I am still in the beginning Los Santos city and I get lost driving around. I've never seen a game that makes exploring and trying new things so fun - The game world seems like several times the size of Vice City. The terrain is now varied including hills, rural areas, 3 very different cities
-Improving controls-especially during firearm aiming and the camera rotates freely for better visibility when driving
-Like Vice City the licensed music is awesome and SA is arguably even better as it's not restricted to the 80s theme
The game is not perfect though. Graphics are pretty poor, although in fairness this is due to limitations of the PS2 hardware.
Full multiplayer has still not been implemented, just a few side mini games involving 2 players.
I can't recommend this game enough though.

I can't decide either... oh wait, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater! :-0
Basically I can't get into enjoying (most of the time) games that...
...are in the first-person view (especially shooters... exception being UT)
...has an art style I do not like (ie. most anything that is not Japanese/Eastern)
...are PC games (consoles are all I'll ever need... most of the times :p)
...lacks polish (GTA...)
So that pretty much takes off most of the games in this poll. :-0

I am a Gamecube owner but IMHO Nintendo is not keeping up with the best titles from the PS2 and XBox. Nintendo needs to move outside the 'kiddie' realm into more mature titles. They have better hardware than the PS2.
Is there anyone here who doesn't think Doom3 was a disappointment? It is decent but not a worthy sequel to one of the most influential games of all time.

*slap*. ;)
Doom3 became a background game the day Half Life2 came out. Play Half Life 2 and I doubt anyone will think Doom3 is the better game.
Doom3 might have a better atmosphere with the shadows, etc. But that's debatable.

PS2 MGS 3
XBX Halo 2
PC Halflife 2
GC who cares?
I've played the first level of Doom3, sure its great if you play with the gamma at +500
I watched HL 2 just being played, and I was impressed on:
#1 the grav beam that controls stationary objects
#2 that squishy thing that controls bugs. I love having AI do my dirtywork, I pretend they are zerglings, and I like things that eat, slash and maim.
#3 the laserguided missile launcher. It follows the laser like an explosive kite of death.

To be fair though Doom3 does get pretty cool about 1/2-3/4 way through. You just have to make it through the first 5-10 hours worth before you start getting to the good stuff.
Half Life 2 impressed me right from the start and never let up.

I think Far Cry is the most under rated game of 2004. I found it the most addictive game of the year.
Half Life 2 has a incredible graphics and physics engine, but I just didnt find it fun. I would play 20 mins at a time and just get bored. Half Life 1 is still my all time favourite fps.
Doom 3, I loved every ID game up until Doom 3. Expected so much, they delieved so little. Stupid flash light.
Halo 2. I found Halo 2 to be very similar to Halo 1, not that big a improvement and it was really repetative to the point I lot interest many times.
The others I havent played yet.

uhm I'd have to say... Final Fantasy XI :cheesygri
Wait.. that came out in 2003, woops...
Of all those, I think I'd pick HL2... maybe MGS:3 if I played it. The first MGS for PS1 was great... haven't picked up console games in a loooong time, though.
EDIT:
if this poll was for biggest disappointment of the year, doom3 wins hands down.

MGS3.
The story was/is simply amazing, especially when it corresponds with previous installments (MGS, MGS2).
The graphics were beautiful; can't get enough of the foliage! Battle with The Boss in the flowers was amazing.
The Gameplay was refreshingly unique and full of little surprises (The End boss fight, dueling with Ocelot while you twirl your guns).
Lastly, the music was well done.
Can't wait till MGS4!
Half Life 2 deserves a mention simply because it can run well with my dated video card (FX5600@1024x768x32,2xAA,4xAF). Aside from snazzy graphics (gotta love the increased dynamic range lighting), the game play was a rehash of HL1, along with a rather limited grav gun.

I haven't played Half Life 2 (yet)... so that probably would be my pick if I had played it.. ;)
I only can speak for PC games.
I picked Doom 3. I actually really enjoyed it and thought it was an amazing game. Most of the issues people have with it are the lighting and the "type" of game they created. They stated right from the start they didn't want to make a "run around a shoot everything" fps. They wanted to create an immersive environment that would scare the crap out of you. Once you get into the game, that is exactly what it is! I also used proper surround sound and it adds a LOT to the game.
I'm playing Far Cry right now... it's growing on me. I think Doom 3 is more of an accomplishment so far... it was something new/special (although not universally appealing from the comments I have seen). It created an environment, that if you embraced it was incredibly immersive and.. well.. scary! It could scare the crap out of you and freak you out at times. That was the point of that game... the darkness of the environment, the surround sound, etc. all were necessary elements to really appreciate the game.

Oh man.. so many games that I haven't played all the way through yet!
Doom 3 - stopped after first level or so. Nothing much interesting so far.
HL2 - Pretty cool game. I got lost when you first get the buggy.. and I haven't played it much since. Still playing CS:S and DOD, though.. btw.. when is DOD:S being released?
Farcry - this game crashed too much on my machine. I haven't gotten into it (although it does look nice).
GTA:SA - I like it. This is the game I'm currently playing..
don't like the fact that the diagonal buttons don't work (using the keyboard to play when doing the dancing or low-rider stuff..), and the free-camera is annoying.
Money seems to be a lot harder to come by in this game than others.. getting haircuts/etc. seems a pointless distraction.
Halo 2 - I don't like the controls for FPSes on consoles. Haven't played this much at all.
Ack! I need to get some more gaming time in to finish these ones off!

I think HL2 was the best because it was highly anticipated and met expectations unlike all the rest of the games :)

I voted halo 2 but I am quite dissappointed that you don't have BF1942 on there. Those would get my vote even though its quite old.

halo 2 for me but im still waitng for hl2 on xbox.
doom3 was definetly what u just described. its definetly about the darkness and sound is KEY. This game is amazing once you get past the first level or so, it is actually the first game that has scared me in a longggg time lol its creepy as hell holding the flashlight and having a surround sound system cranked up.
