We're been working the past little while on trying to generate a bit more revenue (to pay for increasing costs...) in an unobtrusive manner to everyone who uses RFD. We've come up with a script that will automatically add the RFD affiliate link to keywords when they are posted in the forums.

We're just testing it right now with just a couple keywords including:

Amazon.ca
Amazon
Amazon.ca's
Amazon's

CanadianTire.ca
CanadianTire.com
Canadian Tire

Chapters.Indigo.ca
Chapters.Indigo
Chapters
Indigo

Netlink
NCIX
NCIX.com

I just wanted to make this post so no one is shocked by their posts being automatically linked. Also, if anyone spots any bugs or problems with them could they please let me know by sending an e-mail to suggest@redflagdeals.com or just replying in this thread?

It's not working right now.

However it has been before.

If you read the "how did you find RFD" thread there's a few posts where we discovered that Amazon was turning into an affiliate link. ;)

Depending on how the script is written, I see a potential problem. e.g. These chapters in that book is blah blah blah, amazon (the jungle). Well, those are the only 2 I can think of. Not that it'll cause a chaos by any mean. It'll probably make people go "WTH?" for a brief second upon seeing the post

[edit: the word "Chapters" doesn't seem to trigger the autolink]

[edit 2:... or it does... but like Carnage observed, no punctuations besides it

I was just about to post a new thread as a suggestion for MODs to have the functionallity built in that if a member were to enter a website in a post that RFD automatically links it (ie underlines it and makes it an active link... without the member having to click on the ;INSERT HYPERLINK' button)....

Seems like the autolink is pretty much up and running. But I noticed in this Hot Deals thread that the autolink to the NCIX affiliate link doesn't work (as of 12:20pm EST anyway)

so if you italicize, bold or underline the word, it will not link. Also, the case is automatically adjusted when it does link. the 1st and 3rd "amazons" were different case heights, the 1st being all lower case, the second all upper.

Could you please provide a user option to disable this feature? It implies that we personally support a particular company where we might not. If I am going to order something from, say ncix I have no problem using the RFD affiliate link, but would personally rather not have these links auto-inserted into our posts. eg. if we post a complaint about Amazon's service it appears that we would like others to order from them by providing a link to order from them in our post.

Hi,

This isn't something that can be enabled and disabled on an invidividual basis as we'd have to do a lot more programming work to integrate those type of options and into the interface of vBulletin.

I think once everyone realizes that certain words are automatically linked there should be very little confusion about whether you support a company or not. Furthermore, you can still post links to Amazon.ca or any other retailer and their products as normal. The autolinking will only send users to the generic home page of the site and not to a particular product page.

If someone's posting that some monitor costs $500 at NCIX (http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=12789&vpn=FP783&manufacture=BENQ) (and provides the link under the word nCiX) ;

EDIT: nicely done :D link not removed.
Now if only it would strip text of all formatting before determining whether a string is link-worthy :)

Again, I don't understand the purpose in this, editing our posts to provide links to vendors.
Is RFD being compensated for this? Or is it a favor to the vendors?
Personally, I dislike it, and I love RFD.....

On another note, why isnt RFD hotlinked? haha

The autolinker is butchering the URL for the .Amazon ca deal I posted. I have no idea how to get the link to display properly.

Mods, I'm all for new features and referral revenue for RFD but please set up and test new features properly before you roll them out sitewide. Perhaps one of you can fix the product link in the above thread?

It adds links to the actual post instead of creating the links each time the page is loaded. It was too resource intensive the other way.

Agreed; those links are really annoying.

Suggestion.... when replying or editing a post, strip out any HREF with the autolinker link in it. No matter what, the whole post will be analyzed and have it's matching words changed into links when it is submitted, so the only additional overhead would be the removal of the HREFs.

Shouldn't be very much additional work, PHP is a good language to do this in.

yep the autolinker messed up my imgaes that were posted in BST.

should have some kind of way that if it sees and before and after that it won't auto link, also maybe an option to disable the auto link, like the option to disable smiles, would be good.

also words like N<a href=../AffiliateAdmin/redirectpage.php?linkid=140 target=_blank>TSC</a> get messed up

Is there any way the autolinker could be modified to not pull characters out of words? For example, <a href=../AffiliateAdmin/redirectpage.php?linkid=140 target=_blank>TSC</a> would link, but N<a href=../AffiliateAdmin/redirectpage.php?linkid=140 target=_blank>TSC</a> would not? <a href=../AffiliateAdmin/redirectpage.php?linkid=17 target=_blank>Amazon</a> would link but <a href=../AffiliateAdmin/redirectpage.php?linkid=17 target=_blank>Amazon</a>ian would not?

Seems to me that would solve a fair few problems - especially with the messed-up-links (http://www.<a href=../AffiliateAdmin/redirectpage.php?linkid=19 target=_blank><a href=../AffiliateAdmin/redirectpage.php?linkid=17 target=_blank>amazon</a>.ca</a>).

EDIT: Another possible problem -

Linking (for example) to w w w. t s c o m. c o m would result in www.<a href=../AffiliateAdmin/redirectpage.php?linkid=140 target=_blank>tsc</a>om.com. Essentially, you'd be hijacking a link meant for someone else with your afflilate info for (quite possibly) a competitor.

factory direct, factorydirect, and factorydirect.ca would be good for auto link. Theres no aff program, but they might be able to setup an RFD section on the site where they give some $$ to RFD. Or an item with a number like RFD$$$ which would give RFD some $$$

In another thread I just wrote <a href=../autolink/redirectpage.php?linkid=24 target=_blank>Canadian Tire</a>, and Staples.

The latter did not autolink.
(hehe.. is there a deliberate reason for that?!)

How about autolinking "FS", "BB", "CT" ??

It's only autolinking to sites with affiliate programs. Also if we autolinked FS, BB, and CT it would cause quite a mess.
