I know that in the FAQ it explains how to become a "Deal Addict"
Here are the number of posts you need to get to the next member level:
0-99 Newbie
100 Jr Member
200 Member
500 Sr Member
1000 Deal Addict
It REALLY bothers me to see all these so-called "Deal Addicts" who never contribute anything "useful" to the forums / deals sections and simply reply quick one word or useless replies to threads (over and over often within the same thread) ....
I think what determined the level / status of a user should take into account the number of posts, but should NOT be the ONLY factor.... ACTIVE Time logged in could be a good one (anyone can be logged on and leave it, but if they're browsing then they're actually visiting the site ... and perhaps (if nothing else) taking away info and spreading the good RFD word..
Another good thing to take into account would be the amount of users the user RECOMMENDS / refers to RFD ....

Personally, I think deal addict sounds bad. I agree with you 100% about the useless replys. Especially the ones that say "in before lock"
I always try to contribute sometime usefull and I seriously doubt you will see any of my posts that have one or two word replys.
As for titles and status, they are just as useless. Who cares if you have 1000 posts? I have seen the posts where people reach the 1000 mark, I don't bother replying to any because it is just a stupid waste of bandwidth. There is nothing usefull in that thread what so ever.
If you want, you can reset my status to newbie anytime. Doesn't change who I am.

All "Deal Addict" means is that you are addicted to the RFD forums. :)
Other than occasional marking of milestones, I don't think anyone really cares about post counts.

I'd probably rather not know that. It'd be way too high in my case. ;)

Becoming a Deal Addict should have specific requirements, like: having a deal posted to the main page, 5 deals in the Hot Deals/Freebies boards with 100+ replies, things like that.

Yeah I prefer "Sr member" than "Deal addict" personally. It sorta sounds like you go from a wise and respected member to a no-good cocaine sniffing addict or something. LOL!

You're "REALLY" bothered by this? Then you are perhaps emotionally unstable.
Let it go. Take a few deep breaths. I don't even look at the left side of the screen when I'm here.
As for making overly complicated requirements, who's going to check them? Why not elimate titles completely? They really are meaningless, and it's not like they're particularly original, and it's not like they are useful in determining the validity of a post/person/trader, so drop them. Let people their own byline or something.
People who worry about peripheral issues like this are ideally suited for positions in government beaurocracies.

if you have more than 1000 reply ....you should know how much time they are spending on this forum
even if they are not have any big thread or anything but by reading and reply to those threads, they would be call Deal addicted
but for me....i just care about the deal......the status...what ever it is...i don't care
as long as i can find good deal and as long as i'm fast enough to the deal....
that's all i care about

I personally would like the ability to purchase my own title, and also to purchase titles for others. Think about it; cash coming in for RFD, cummer gets the title "inbred halfwit"...everyone's happy.

This is an interesting money raiser for RFD....when someone wants to name themselves, they can just pay a small fee, but when you want to name someone else, they are informed and are given the option to bid against you...all proceeds go to RFD :)

if you check out howardforums.com they have really unique titles at various milestones. I've seen a different title at 15 posts than someone at 10 posts. I think it's fun.
I'd be into paying a lttle for a custom title, like "scam artist bait" or 13th pepsipod winner" etc. When I modded at another forum, we had a section where peope would post their requested title, which allowed others to comment or make suggestions so all could see. It was a pretty cool idea.

Funny that you mention that.
A forum I'm a member of used to have a system where you got "points" for making new posts/threads,etc. You could buy the option of chaning your title. But you could also buy to change someone else's title.
No one ever used it though, as it's kind of a small community. And the feature has been phased out in recent upgrades.

ok .. but the point of this thread is not to propose creating the ability to buy titles ... It's more of a suggestion that other things than be taken into consideration other than purely post count ...

I wasn't suggesting that feature be added to the forums. I was just replying to JAC's joke that the feature actually does exist on some forums.
On a forum of this size it would just be chaos.

I use this forum to buy and sell my goods. I also like to bump threads of people i think are good traders. :cheesygri
I guess that means I don't contribute anything "useful" to the forums ;)
Sorry bro.

In my opinion that falls under the "usefull" category, after all, BST is a large part of RFD, and so is backing up a seller with good reviews.
I view "+1" posts as useless, as well as flames directed at people in conversations. Off-topic may be full of what some consider useless posts, but they may be intriguing to others, I prefer not to judge if they generate a lively conversation. I will fully admit that I do label some threads in Off Topic as useless, but I just skip over them, and leave them for others.
Do people actually put any value in titles? I was in a rush to reach Deal Addict when I first joined, but now that I'm there I just ignore it, and the titles of other users. I typically only view them when I notice a dispute is going on, and weigh them against their join date.
Gee

I agree, I tend to skip what I consider useless posts. Who cares?
As far as I am concerned. When I want to make a deal with someone. I look at their join date and how many posts. If it is a few hundred and they have been a member for a couple of years, I know that they will not run off. I am confident to buy or sell to them.
The join date is the most important in my opinion. If they are still around after a couple of years, that is dedication. They aren't going anywhere and I can trust them.
As far as I can see. MrKen has the highest post count (almost 10,000), I am still new here. So I can't say if all his posts are usefull or useless. But that is not for me to judge.
Personally I think this thread is useless, so I reserve my comments.
If you are dedicated to RedFlagDeals, you will be here everyday (like me and most others) and eventually your post count will increase over time and you will become a deal addict (I still hate that title). But if you want to earn my respect (not that you care) it is a combination of usefull contributions to the members and long standing membership. Not post counts.
I am sure I can get to 10,000 posts within a year, if I bump other people's threads and use stupid comments like
in before lock
But what does that really serve? How will others view me? I rather give usefull information and help in any way I can.
That is why, you will NEVER see me bump a thread (especially my own) and I will never start a useless thread.
I bump my own threads by either
1. Lowering my price
2. Changing something in the thread.
That is usefull information for others
Bump is not.

That's actually gotten people in trouble before, although I understand what you're saying. There's been more then one good trader to go bad. People with large posts counts, and had been here for awile.
The most important thing in any trade is information. If you know the persons contact info then they're not going to screw you. In nearly every case where someone gets ripped off it's because all they had was a hotmail address.
Scammers aren't going to give out their info because they know the guy will come kicking the door in. They prey on those they can hide from.

I guess that is where Heatware comes in. It shouldn't be hard to track someone that hangs around the forum for awhile. They must have dealt with one person or another and should be easy to track down.
So far, I have been fortunate. I have found lots of great deals, met lots of people and the experience has renewed my faith in people. It also helps that I only deal in person.

im not associating "user status" with whether a person is trust-worthy or not... I just am sick of seeing ppl who post USELESS threads and/or replies get that esteemed status ... hehe...
