Would be nice if you could add this, so we could type a response to a thread and post it without having to hit reply first.
Example of what I mean is on www.notebookforums.com
They also use VB, so I'm sure the feature is available if you guys want to implement it.

Yeah a couple other boards I frequent too have that feature
I believe they got rid of it if my memory serves me right
It cuts down on alot less 1 word responses though without it
THis could be a reason, but a good addon non the less

I can't see the quick reply feature on that forum .. maybe it's because I'm not logged in.
Anyway, yeah, I would like to see that feature on RFD as well. Less scrolling to read what someone said and having to copy what you wrote to clipboard while hitting the back button to see a poster's location/post count, etc.

yeah, hope we'll have it soon. Once you've used it you're not going to want to go back! :D

Is that so you guys can type up a reply while holding a cheeseburger in the other hand?
* waits to see who gets the reference *

I haven't looked into this feature that much but I am worried about a performance hit since this quick reply box would have to be loaded on every page instead of the reply box simply loading when someone wants to reply. You obviously look at more pages than you reply to (or you probably should :) ) so I'm not sure this would be a good idea in terms of keeping the site speedy.

hmm .. maybe we should collect some statistics then (a poll on whether we would like to try this feature?). I reply to almost every thread I read (ie. more than 50%) so it would benefit me for sure.

If you compare the number of thread views with the number of replies you can basically tell that the ratio of views to replies is nowhere near 50%.

Is it an option that could be turned on or off in our CP.
That way those that would like it could turn it off,and those that lurk wouldn't be affected.

That's what I was going to suggest. Would it be possible to implement as an option for those who want to enable it?

It would help especially those of us who post frequently :D

I just tried it and it didn't there does not seem to be an option in the CP to turn it on or off. It looks like the setting is global.

Am I seeing things? I *just* went to the food forum (6:25pm EST). In the thread, there's a small box for quick reply below all the messages. I came over here to this thread, nothing. What's going on? Am I hullucinatin!??? :cheesygri
[EDIT: Just went back to the very same thread that I saw the feature on (the "Do you cook... bake" thread) and now it's gone. Maybe I'm really seeing things. Sorry]

Ah, that'd explain it. I posted right when Derek posted his. Cool

Why not try it for a few days or a week and see if performance takes a huge hit like your worried about? If it does, end of trial. If not, it can stick around for awhile :)
I'm not sure about the hardware side of RFD, but notebook forums is comparable to RFD in terms of users online, and the site is not slow.
672 online for notebook
688 online for RFD
And its not every page, just ever page of every thread. No quick reply unless your viewing a specific thread.

hmm .. or you can maybe make it so that it only shows if you've posted at least once on the thread. Because I know for me if I responded to a thread once (especially with email notification enabled), the chances of me replying to the same thread again are higher than other threads I read.

did this ever go anywhere? I'd be interested in this feature as well. I don't think it would really be a load time issue as it's just an input box really.

Sadly no, but hey, maybe now the mods are willing to reconsider?

I would like this feature too! So it's still not possible to make it an option for each user? Especially if we can customize it to add the smilies panel, that would be so awesome!

I really, really hope we can get a quick reply feature on this site. Not having one drives me nuts.
If you're worried about a performance hit, then just have the reply box on the last page of the thread, instead of every page.
www.j-body.org has that feature like I described. You have to go to the last page to use the reply box, but it's still there.
Please consider it!

I've found this feature useful on other messageboards, wouldn't mind seeing it on RFD.

It would be nice for the mods to try it for a week or so to see the impact on the site or else allow it to be enabled for only select members maybe.
Its a nice feature at other sites I use.
