i have the itrip mini and i would say the signal strength depends on which station you chose. If the station has a lot of static and does't have other stations' background noise on it, i find it to be really clear. i can usually put it on my cup holder or passenger seat and get a very good signal.

when i find myself travelling from city to city, i have to constantly change the radio station to find a clear signal.

i think this is almost a must for ipod owners who drive. i also pump my ipod through a boombox at work and it works very nicely too.

i'm still looking for a good ipod mini carrying case. the vaja ones are good but really expensive too.

I have an iTrip for my 4Th G iPod and it works pretty good. You do get a little static but I find it depends on the car (It works better in my wife's car). All in all though it's great.

For a case I'd definately recommend the iSkin. I have the Ghost model on my iPod and love it. You can order online from www.iskin.com. They're in Toronto so when it's shipped it comes fast. Compusmart also carries them but last i checked they didn't have 4th G skins yet.

iTrip is all about the station you choose, which is great because you can choose any station. When in Mississauga, I use 100.3 and it is great. If another car is within 10-15m they can hear it too. Although I do have to change the station when I'm in Toronto, I don't remember what I use though.

All I have is the iTrip and PowerPod (car power adapter).

Nope, it's just the skin. You have to buy screen protector, clip etc separately. If you want to be able to use the SWV belt clip, you have to get either the exo 4g, exo2 4g, or exoflp 4g b/c those ones have that little nubbin you need for that particular belt clip.

You'd be better off getting the official iSkin if that's the case ( No Pun Intended ) as it comes with the screen protector, belt clip, and possibly still the accessories bag. ( Not sure if it comes with the iPod iSkin anymore, but the iRiver iSkin ships with it. )

#1-14 are the actual features of the skin (except the ishade which needs to be purchased separately. i guess that's why the price is there.) I was actually confused at first and thought the ishade was included. But nope. And #15-20 shows compatiblity with various accessories.

If you use lossless compression, and a good audiphile quality headphones like the Shure, or Etymotics, the iPOD sounds AMAZINGLY good.

Even a hardened audiophile shoud be pleased at the sound quality.

So my advice is the first thing one should do is dump the Apple earplugs for something better. The iPOD can do a lot better. Even the cheaper Shure e2C would be a big improvement,

I have the following accessories to go w/ my G3

iTrip - it is a much have for ipod and I find that 90.1 is the best station.
Applecare - Since ipod battery is not very reliable, it is better to get some support.
iskin - enough said.
Belkin battery pack - It last forever and use standard AA battery.

Yes the iSkin includes belt clip.

Lajo's is usually 12 bucks or so, iSkin 22. iSkin defaults with clip and screen, Lajo doesn't.

Still, I wish I knew a place in GTA that sold skins. Futureshop is pathetic, same with Bestbuy.

For those looking to spend a little less, I highly recommend the Koss Porta Pro stereophones. They look pretty retro and flimsy, but the sound is awesome. They are pretty sturdy and fold up into a little package that is really portable. I throw them in a pocket in my bag after wrapping up the cord around them. I think they're around $60 at Best Buy. I *think* you can try them out at the store but I'm not sure about that. They also come with a nice lifetime warranty: if ever something goes wrong, ship them with a money order for CAD$7.00 to an address in Oakville and you get a new pair. I've already done this once because the clip at the top split open. They were still usable but it was a minor annoyance. I received a new pair a week later. Once again though, the main reason I bought them is because of the sound.

While they provide very good isolation, this is only true with the foam pads...
Clarity is very good, but it does miss out on quite a bit of detail at the higher end, and the sound is slightly skewed to the treble which results weaker bass when listening at lower volumes.

That being said, I still use them on a daily basis... but I would aim for Etymotic's er-6i or er-4s with s/p converter if i ever need to go through this all over again

EDIT: Compared to stock or lower earphones, it's still no comparison... these are just significantly better

this is what I've been looking at also. There are 3 main companies that all do similar things and have similar prices: Neo-ion (the one you posted), Dension Ice-link, and AUX-POD (by Pac Audio). All of these will allow some control of the ipod through your existing stereo and are catered to OEM head units. If you have an aftermarket stereo you can get away with a direct wire connection to the auxilary audio input (if your deck has one). If it doesn't, it probably has a cd changer connection and you can use adapters to allow a connection to this port.

Also, if you have an Alpine deck you're in luck. They make an ipod connection kit only if you have an alpine stereo with the proper cd changer connector (that means all 2004+ models or any model that ends with "A" in the 3 letter model code).

I'm probably going to get an adapter from blitzsafe specific for my OEM car cd changer. Its still around $60-70 US, so while its not super cheap, at least it will give me line level audio. I won't be able to control the ipod.

Anyone have any comments / experience with the Griffin EarJams? They basically convert the iPod earbuds, into in-canal earphones with an attachment.

It would be a fair bit cheaper then buying some Sony MDR-EX51/71 earphones. And since the stock Apple earbuds don't sound too bad to me (Better than my Senn MX-400 earbuds), I think it would be a viable option for me.

Ahhh, I already got a long hairline scratch down the back of my ipod, it's been only two days, damn thing gets scratched SO easily :o . Anyone else get any scratches yet? I guess I better get an Iskin really soon..
I was over at Ipodlounge and most of the members said that Brasso, the metal polisher works wonders in removing scratches gonna try that out...

Sound check should be a normalization thing - if you have songs that vary a lot in volume, well, you're not gonna get owned going from a low volume mp3 to suddenly a high volume one

but on the other hand... most pppl's mp3s are within 5% volume of each other anyway

I knew the ipod was a scratchwhore... this is why i bought the skin before the ipod. I also bought a lcd + scroll wheel sratch protector...
when i got the ipod, i instantly put it on the scratch proteectors, put it into the silicone skin, and taped the top side of the ipod with clear tape. It's like an environment suit...

Oh I use them outdoors all the time - I can study under any environment with them.. McDonald's, stackbucks... heck it drowns out most of the bus noise too.

Of course, that does put you at a disadvantage, but it's not any worse than if you're deaf :p

(BTW, this is only with the foam tips. If you use the plastic/gel tips, the isolation is nowhere near as good - maybe because my stupid ears are too large for the small tips but too small for the medium)

As for sites: try head-fi.org - audiophile headphone site - the e3c's are not liked so much anymore. most people suggest the etymotic er-6i and er-4s... so... that's what I would go for next too.

True, and since I have not listened to a set of er-4s', I cannot make that judgement call.

However, I do notice a few details missing in some songs that I swore I heard using my speakers. Mostly high end treble or subtle bass effects (which was a bit on the weak side in the first place)

I knew the ipod was a scratchwhore... this is why i bought the skin before the ipod. I also bought a lcd + scroll wheel sratch protector...
when i got the ipod, i instantly put it on the scratch proteectors, put it into the silicone skin, and taped the top side of the ipod with clear tape. It's like an environment suit...

not at all.. its thin enough to have 2 Lajo covers for it... my friend had the exo 3G and the zipclear case togehter and the wheel works perfect... ont he 4G its pretty much the same..

As much as I'm so super stoked on finally getting an iPod, and how extremely unrealistically happy I am, I've gotta say this:

I'm off cover hunting tomorrow. iSkin is looking good. Like the iPod itself, it's not the best choice, simply the coolest.
Also thinking of going with the Contour. Much smarter buy for the money, just not nearly as cool.

The chromed back makes it such a scratch magnet it's not funny. My friend put his on a table and it picked up a scratch.

Anyone have any comments / experience with the Griffin EarJams? They basically convert the iPod earbuds, into in-canal earphones with an attachment.

It would be a fair bit cheaper then buying some Sony MDR-EX51/71 earphones. And since the stock Apple earbuds don't sound too bad to me (Better than my Senn MX-400 earbuds), I think it would be a viable option for me.

As an aside, I saw someone on the BST selling those same Sony earphones for $69..

Great post! Went to a Compusmart and dished out 45 for an iSkin eVo2 Ghost. Probably more than it would've cost ebaying it, but better than waiting another week or two and getting anymore scratches on my babies.

And there's a ton of Compusmarts too, if you're nowhere near downtown and don't feel like going down there to save a measely five bucks or so.

OK so after reading a bunch more, I think I'm actually going to buy the Etymotic 'isolator' canal earphones (ER-6). The reviews around the net sold me.

I *wish* I had the guts to spend the money on the ER-4S, but what I thought was $300 was actually $400+. I'm not quite there yet. :)

For you iPod fashion nuggets out there, they also have the ER-6i which are iPod coloured (white cord etc) but they're a little more expensive.

FYI the best place I've found so far is the Ear Plug Super Store (http://store.yahoo.com/earplugstore/). I'm going to keep looking, but it looks like it's going to be around USD$95. I'm going to keep looking and I'll post when I finally order them with the details about shipping to Canada, etc.

Indeed, iPod falls behind most of the other frontrunning HDD based players in that department, it's got poor output and that severely limits what types of headphones, earbuds or canalphones you can use with it. ( Among others, but I'll let that go. )

The Eggos are excellent headphones, and they're pretty much on par with the cost of the Etys, and very comfortable to wear, even for 5 hours+ ( Though I would recommend taking them off after that, as they do still warm up your ears. )

Check out Audiocubes.com, they ship from Japan, but the cost of shipping is never more than 10 bucks or so and they make sure to mark it as a purchase of under 20 dollars to avoid any duties, which works quite well as I didn't have to pay any on mine. As well, they come with a 1.5 foot cord attached to the left side of the headphones, and 3 foot extension which can plug onto the end of that, which is pretty much designed for people who have devices with a remote, and hate the excess cord clutter that is usually associated with it.

One quick note though, what I have is the MDR-D66SL which would be considered the "Eggo Pro" and they only come in one colour, which is the carbon-esque black. They also have the MDR-D22SL, which are the step down Eggos and they have slightly smaller drivers, a plastic headband, though it still folds up just as easily, and come in 3 colours; blue, black and a bubbly, almost see-through white. I would think if you wanted these for use with an iPod you'd probably want to take a look at the white D22's. ( If you're into that whole matching thing, which I'm not, but the D66's happened to match my iRiver quite well on their own. Especially with the silver port covers on the sides of the Eggos. :cheesygri )

I'm getting EXTREMELY frustrated trying to find a case in downtown Toronto. CompuSmart and CompuSmart Express (in the Eatons Centre) have a whole pile of 3G iSkins. The only Evo2's they have are hot pink. They have a couple of Contour Design Showcases left for $39.99, but I'd rather not get one of those now that the iSee's are out.

I've checked countless other stores on Yonge St. and Queen St. without luck. I heard Urban Outfitters on Yonge St. had iPod cases so I went to look... once again, they just had a piule of 3G iSkins. You'd think someone around here would carry new iPod cases. I did a quick runthrough, and with expediated shipping, it comes to an additional $7 ontop of a $26.49 skin. After taxes and what not, it comes to a total of $38.48. tempting offer....I just wonder if Lajo will have a good november deal.

The iSkin comes with a thick plastic screen protector, which you insert after inserting the player into the iSkin, it has 4 little nubs that raise it above the device, and a raised edge on the inside of the skin to hold the screen protector in place. ( At least for the iRiver version. )

The various reviews on the forums state the the iShade will work with the eXo3x. I placed my order through lajo today and the total for the exo3x, zip4g and iShade came to $15.22 USD, which is less than $20 CDN.

I'll be ordering my 20Gb 4G iPod through my university tomorrow or Thursday with the education discount, which means both the skin and the iPod should be arriving at roughly the same time. I'm still entering NPNs in the Pepsi contest when I can, but I wanted to be sure I'd have an iPod this X-mas

The vents are mainly for when the device is charging, but I don't think that it'd really matter all that much, it would take a lot of heat in order to melt any part of the skin to the player itself.

I think the vent holes are pointless, silicone is a reasonable conductor of heat and so the skin itself will let the heat through. If you notice the vent holes are only on the back where the LCD is, and not behind the lower portion where the Hard drive sits, where you'd assume most of the heat would come from. So I don't see how that helps any.

Well I received the iPod today, all charged and set up and it is driving my Koss Porta Pro headphones very well. If I turn the volume all the way up it hurts. First CD I put in: Counting Crows - Hard Candy.

Now I'm wondering just how much better those Etymotic earphones are going to sound. I've forgotten how good these Koss headphones sound; the iPod for some reason made me appreciate them again.

edit: Oh my, the included Apple earbuds are terrible! I didn't think they'd be this bad actually. They can't even handle turning the volume past 75%.

1. How important is it to have screen protection? I know it's an extra $3.50 but is it really an issue?

2. I like the idea of covering the sync port, but, I figure that between daily (or almost daily) battery charges and occasional syncing I will be opening/closing that bottom flap (exoflp and exoflpfb) quite a bit. Any issues with it breaking/tearing at the 'hinge' (afterall, those skins are pretty thin)? Any comments?

At Canadian Computer they had roughly 6 or 7 iPod iSkins left, plus iPod Armour (hard metal case with see-through screen).

From the pic on the iSkin (http://iskin.com/) homepage, they had every colour, plus black ("ebony") but not the normal white one. Instead, there was a glow in the dark version of the white one. I bought the one on the far left of the eVo2 pic.

I have to admit I sat here for about five minutes trying to figure out what the @&(* to do to get the iPod in the case. Couldn't find any openings or flaps. So I just stretched it open. The iPod slides in the hole for the screen and the screen protector goes on after. I have no problem with carrying it around now as it does feel a lot more protected. You guys got me nervous handling this thing in the 24 hrs until I bought the case. :)

The scroll wheel does not have anything over it, but I left the original plastic protector on and it stays put. Not too concerned about the wheel; the screen is the main concern.

Another benefit, for me at least, is that I no longer look like I have an iPod and am not self-conscious about using it in public. It's not a fashion statement for me. (I see the irony in that it's a fashion itself but anyway..) I'd feel just as nervous by looking at a $500 watch on my arm.

Solid case, protects the screen, looks decent and doesn't scream 'iPod!!'. I wouldn't mind seeing a Lajo case but for me, this works.

edit: oops--the 'carbon' case on the left? it's out of stock since I bought it. :)

its not really an issue if u dont mind the occasionla scratches on your ipod screen tho.. i mean a relatively cheap alternative is getting a sheet of PDA screen protectors.. it does a good job preventing scratches... i myself have a sheet of PDA screen protector on my ipod as well as an ishade... and both are just fine..

the flap on the exo's are tough as nails... i have my exflpfb on my dock everyday and in excess of days when i dont use it... and the flap is fine.. as Lajo stated on his messegeboard he hasnt seen any breakage of the flap on the exoflp... he mentions that the japanese silicon he uses are the highest of quality...

Thanks for the feedback. It wasn't until cmge mentioned the Lajo forums that I was finally able to locate them. Anyways, after browsing around for a bit I am now leaning towards the exo3x case, reasons being:

1. according to a couple reviews the iShade apparently fits this case just fine (despite of what the features chart says)
2. I do prefer the thinner (1/2 the thickness) case over the bulkier ones I was considering earlier

I would still like to cover the sync port but I think I will compromise. Since it's somewhat hidden at the bottom, I think it'll be much easier to improvise (more so than with the screen or the scroll wheel anyways). I also tend to take real good care of my "toys" so I'm hoping it won't be too big of an issue.

It's now down to picking the colour. I like Asphalt and Ice but am having a hard time deciding. I also have to pick a screen cover colour to go with one of those :|

SaranWrap makes quick ghetto case. :D I wrapped mine in plastic wrap and stuck it in an old felt sunglass bag. It won't stop any big scratching but if I'm carefull I think it'll work fine till I get my real case. ;)

So today I got sick of leaving my iPod at home and took it with me for the first time. Don't have a case yet but I improvised. The portable music device the iPod is replacing is my MiniDisc recorder (MZ-R70) and it came with a soft fabric pouch type thing, so I decided that it should be okay as long as I'm really careful when I take it out. So far so good.

Anyway, when I first listened to my iPod in my house I thought the sound was fantastic. However, as soon as I stepped out the door I realized that it sounded like complete crap when in the real-world. The sound just sounds empty and hollow like it's lacking any oomph or substance. My minidisc player seemed to have fffaarrr better sound.

Now my question: Is this just the crappy earbuds the thing came with? I thought they seemed half-decent for now but I think I was wrong. I'm hoping the iPod's sound isn't that bad, and I don't see how it possibly could be. I'd try my old Sony ones (that came with the MD) but they kind of half-died last week (the left one doesn't get any sound unless you fiddle with the wires. What a convenience it decided to die now????).

Can anyone suggest a good pair or earphones? I'm looking to spend probably $60-70 MAX. I would prefer not to spend more than that but if something extraordinarily better can be had for a bit more I'd pay.

Thought I was gonna go for a Contour Design case but I think I've realized I'd prefer a skin over a hard case.

Codex, I agree about the supplied earphones being a big dissapointment. I couldn't believe how much I had to crank up the volume once I stepped out of the house. And the sound is just like you said, no oomph. Very flat. Everything seems to be there, but it has no life to it whatsoever.
Have you tried the earphones from your minidisc player? Might be a big jump up right there.

Anyway, when I first listened to my iPod in my house I thought the sound was fantastic. However, as soon as I stepped out the door I realized that it sounded like complete crap when in the real-world. The sound just sounds empty and hollow like it's lacking any oomph or substance. My minidisc player seemed to have fffaarrr better sound.

Now my question: Is this just the crappy earbuds the thing came with? I thought they seemed half-decent for now but I think I was wrong. I'm hoping the iPod's sound isn't that bad, and I don't see how it possibly could be. I'd try my old Sony ones (that came with the MD) but they kind of half-died last week (the left one doesn't get any sound unless you fiddle with the wires. What a convenience it decided to die now????).

I've been listening for a day or so now and I can say the sound quality of the iPod is at least as good as the iRiver IMP-350, which did get very good reviews for its output. I loaded on some 128k mp3s to compare to the usual 192+ or VBR and I can tell the difference in quality. Which bitrate were you using?

I did put on the Apple earbud headphones, not expecting too much, but was actually surprised how poor they sound. I would have thought a $400+ mp3 player would come with decent phones!

Can anyone suggest a good pair or earphones? I'm looking to spend probably $60-70 MAX. I would prefer not to spend more than that but if something extraordinarily better can be had for a bit more I'd pay.

I have recommended the Koss Porta Pro earlier in this thread, but I'm biased. :) The pros have recommended the Sennheiser PX 100 (http://www.headphone.com/layout.php?topicID=3&subTopicID=26&productID=0020080010) as best headphone for the price range. I think Radioshack carries them, but not at a decent price (as usual).

I had the EX71s for a while, and yes, they have the behind-the-neck style of cord. Still they're far from good as far as sound goes, they over-power you with bass and it leaves the midrange muddled and kinda ruins the experience.

Hmm... I find it quite surprising how many of you guys say the included earbuds are so craptacular. I have no idea what you guys are comparing them to though. I don't have any "high-end" headphones lying around to see how much better the iPod will sound with a good pair.

But comparing the included earbuds to: in ear canal, or bigger / full sized headphones isn't really fair competition. Since anything that's fairly decent quality will probably beat out the included earbuds in terms of sound quality. As they would simply provide better isolation / have bigger drivers which = better sound.

That being said the included earbuds are pretty much on par with my Sennheiser MX400 earbuds IMO, which are quite good in terms of performance for earbuds (I'm not talking about in ear canal headphones) in their price range.

However I have to say, I find the sound of the iPod lacking in the bass / "oomph" department and the EQ is a waste of time if you ask me. But then I guess that's because I like more bass and might be considered a bass-head. The bass and EQ seemed far better on my old Iomega HipZip Mp3 Player. So I agree, that it's very flat sounding with the included earbuds. I guess I just might have to invest in something better to see what I'm actually missing in terms of audio quality with the iPod.

seriously it wont look it that much any bigger... i have both the 1.2mm and 2.0mm exo4G and it doesnt make my ipod any bigger at all... and as for the thickness of the case i was told it was for shock absorption.. obv the thincker the better and safe... it depends on how yer everyday use is for it... my friend has the 0.7mm and the zipclear case together... not bulky either

and also iShade (screen protector) will not fit for a 0.7mm skin (shown on the features list).....however from users on the Lajo forum, the iShade will fit nicely for the 1.2mm skin even tho it is not listed on the features list......

Either way, they both come with 3 sets of gaskets, 1 small, 1 medium, and 1 large for different sized ears.

I own the EX70s myself, though I have them in Blue, though the Warranty isn't much of a worry, I've had mine for about 3 years now and they've fared just fine, though I think one of my cats frayed the cord as it has a rip in it, despite being fine the last time I used them, which was a good 7 months ago.

Though really, the reason I stopped using them is simply because when comparing them to my D66's they sound horrible.

I might have gotten this before I got the iSkin but I like the swivel beltclip on the iSkin. Plus, I think the hard plastic on the iSee makes it too bulky and eventually get scratched up too.

Personally, I ordered the lajo eXo3x because the most important feature to me was a covered click wheel. I don't have a dock, so I don't really care about the flip-up compatability. I also don't like the idea of having that slit in the case that leaves bare metal back showing, no matter how thin. The eXo3x is also one of the thinner skins around while still proving some degree of protection against bumps.

There's a review of the speck case over at ipodlounge.com and the say the Kraton plastic isn't quite as nice feeling as silicone. My lajo skin should be arriving some time this week. I'll keep you posted.

Is the "Pores" neccessary? or just a psychological thingy? it does have the metal thing sticking out for a swivel clip, but is that metal thing detachable?

I'll compare them with my current Koss Porta Pros and decide which sounds better. From what I gather so far, it depends on the type of music you're listening to. Sony is neutral; Koss has heavier bass. Hopefully I'll enjoy listening to both, otherwise you may see the Sony's in the BST. :)

Where did you hear about the duties/taxes issue? I had heard about this problem with receiving cases from Countour Design, but not Lajo. It'll definately make me think twice if I hear its gonna happen when I order my Lajo. Anyone with first hand experience? I know some of you have already ordered your Lajo skins.

I think the "pores" are more aesthetic than anything. I think they look pretty cool but flat backs have the advantage of having the "cleaner" look. Personally, I wouldn't make it a deciding factor. If they really were required I'm sure they would all have them... I'm sure Lajo doesn't wanna be burning everyone's iPods out :P

I think the vent holes are pointless, silicone is a reasonable conductor of heat and so the skin itself will let the heat through. If you notice the vent holes are only on the back where the LCD is, and not behind the lower portion where the Hard drive sits, where you'd assume most of the heat would come from. So I don't see how that helps any.

So now I can play my ipod on my stereo speakers, and as for recharging it just plug in your AC Adaptor that came with the Ipod, so I think that covers all the functionality of the Dock for a much smaller price..

The best part is I got it for $1.08 cause of my buddy's staff purchase discount. :cheesygri But you don't have to go to bestbuy for it, any radioshack or electronics store(probably cheaper) carries Y audio cables..

This is what I'm doing with my 3g ipod. I got the cable from Surplus on Queen St in TO for $1. I plug it into my mini stereo which has a flat top to display the ipod while either in-dock or just sitting flat (when my dock's at work). It always impresse people when they see how sleek it looks and that "all that music is coming from that tiny white box" (my mom's words exactly)!

It's just a pretty version of a firewire cable. It doesn't do anything special, although it has a dedicated outlet for you to plug speakers into.

It's more of a freebie for those of us that bought the 40 gig. I've used it less and less considering I'm really too lazy to take the iPod out of the skin.

The only complaint I've ever heard regarding the D66's is just that for some folks, the headband creaks when they turn their head, which doesn't make much sense to me and personally I've never experienced that issue. Other than that one possible problem I'm sure you'll love them, extremely comfortable, the sound quality leaps ahead of the Porta-Pros by a huge margin, and despite not being extremely "Bass-Heavy" you can get a good thump out of them, depending on what your input device is. They put out a good sound with my iRiver, and for the songs that you'd expect a lot of bass in, they deliver a lot of bass. :)

Got my ice eXo3x, zip4g and crystal iShade today. Ordered on the 26th, shipped on the 27th and arrived on the 2nd. It was shipped in a bubble-padded envelope 18cm x 12cm. No import/customs fees as far as I've seen because the declared value on the envelope was 50 cents

Great case:
- close fitting, doesn't seem to add a lot of bulk to the iPod
- cut outs for sync port, headphone/aux jack and hold switch aligned well
- no loss of sensitivity on the click wheel since the silicone they use there is extremely thin

There is that litle loop for the bungee on the left side, but I don't really mind it. You can cut it off with an X-acto knife if it bothers you that much. The silicone is also very grippy when you first get it. If you like the tactile feel of it, that'll be a plus, but if you're like me and will be leaving it in pockets most of the time, you'll want to rub some baby powder on it to reduce the grippiness and therefore the likelihood of it attracting lint.

Great buy, especially since the total came out to less than $20 CDN shipped. A definite recommendation.

I hear you...I've had mine for a couple of days now but it also is sitting in the box. I've enen gone as far as leaving the clear plastic wrapping on the ipod (just in case).

I left the clear plastic on, and then put it in my pocket. In was getting pretty hazzy, so after a week I checked on it. Not good. The Apple plastic casing is like sandpaper to the inside case. It faired better much better in the weeks to come by just being in the same pocket with no protection.

When I decide on a case, I'll try Maguire's Plastic X from Canadian Tire to clean it up. Failing that, Brasso.

exo3xo is 1.2mm thick, has open scroll wheel, no flip bottom, but has a cutout for the sync port
exoflpfb is 2mm thick, has covered scrool wheel, covered sync port that is accessed by flipping it up.

I opted to go for the Canadian Company for my purchase. iSkin had my evo2 Carbon delivered within 1 day of purchase. Not too bad at all. I really like the swivel belt clip.

iTrip was $50 CAD--shop around. It isn't as good as a cassette adapter--what is?--but considering it is an FM transmitter the size of an eraser, it isn't bad. Even in Toronto. Unlike other FM transmitters you have the full range of odd numbered frequencies, from 87.9 to 107.7 or so. And you can download 87.7 and 107.9 in case you need them.

I'm getting EXTREMELY frustrated trying to find a case in downtown Toronto. CompuSmart and CompuSmart Express (in the Eatons Centre) have a whole pile of 3G iSkins. The only Evo2's they have are hot pink. They have a couple of Contour Design Showcases left for $39.99, but I'd rather not get one of those now that the iSee's are out.

I've checked countless other stores on Yonge St. and Queen St. without luck. I heard Urban Outfitters on Yonge St. had iPod cases so I went to look... once again, they just had a piule of 3G iSkins. You'd think someone around here would carry new iPod cases. I really want an iSee but I think I'll order an iSkin for now and if I ever find an iSee in Canada I guess I'll just end up with two cases...


Well, here is a scoop. When I called Urban Outfitters last week they had no clue what an iSkin was.

I called all the other official iSkin distributors in Toronto. Finally, Audio 9 said, why not call CPUsed? CPUsed is a known Mac reseller and obviously used Mac equipment dealer. The same store runs PCUsed.

CPUsed had the colour I wanted, set it aside, and sold it to me the next day for about $35. And when I picked it up I got to gape at the Apple 30" Cinema Displays, and the new G5 all in one iMacs, and ask some technical questions. CPUsed still isn't on the iSkin site as an official reseller, which I let them know, but they are a bona fide reseller.

Last I looked it was. You have to go through the process of 'buying' an iPod before you get to the option.

Technically speaking it's not, compared to other DAPs it's a tad on the low side. And no, 3 million per month sold won't convince me, I've stated my opinions on why that is many times.

iPod sells well because it has 3 things going for it.

The first being that it's backed by a well seasoned company, who can afford MASSIVE advertising campaigns, thus saturating the people with the thought of an "iPod" long before the other, more fully-featured players came along. ( Some of whom don't even advertise to this day. )

The second thing is the "chiq" involved in owning one, until everybody else has one, and the novelty pretty much wears off.

And third being the simplicity of the design, made for people who can't be arsed to learn how to use something if it takes more than 10 minutes, though that's not to say that tech-minded folks don't buy them either, I just think that's more due to a personal preference regarding the looks of the device. ( Backed up by the fact that a lot of people claim to have used other players first, but thought they were too "complicated." Which either goes to show the level of intelligence involved with those folks, or just the amount of perseverence they have, as most of the better alternatives can be figured out with less than 20 minutes use, and a quick browse of the manual. )

If perhaps Creative, iRiver or even Rio were to spend as much on advertising as Apple has for the iPod, do you really think it would have as high of a market-share as it does now? I sure as hell don't. Not to say I wouldn't take one if offered to me for free, I just wouldn't buy it. :)

No, it's backed by a WEALTHY company, with good marketing skills. Personally I've never liked the looks of the iPod, I can agree that the design is well thought out to some degree, but the features seem to have gotten a lesser polish.

I think for the most part, Apple is taking the "What will sell well to teenage girls" approach than the "What do current/prospective owners actually want" approach, at least regarding the feature set. The design is a bit feminine, the device is mind-numbingly simple ( Not to say women are stupid, but a majority of teenage girls are less than technological wizards. ) then they add picture support, though lacking the major features that would make it viable to anyone BUT teenagers, female or otherwise, features such as USB-Host, so that you don't have to be near a computer to put pictures on the device.

Not to say that it's DESIGNED for teenage girls, but the way they package it makes it seem like that's who they are marketing it towards with the simple interface, white face and shiny aluminum back, games, etc.

I view it as an elitist device, by an elitist company which dominates the market by oversaturating the public with advertisements, such as commercials, billboards, posters, subway cars, etc.

If you choose credit card it takes you to the Paypal page but I think that is just what they use for a secure oversees transaction maybe?

I have a PayPal account but the first time I went to order without being logged into PayPal it just brought me to a screen to fill in the Credit Card info. I thought I hit PayPal payment at first so I exited and made another order then realized it goes through PayPal so I logged in and finished it.

Anyways I don't think you need an account to pay , it's just using them as a 3rd party for the payments I think. They might take a small service fee for using them though.

It took roughly 7 days (not business days) to get from China to Ottawa. The silicone skin (and zip4g if you ordered the bonus) come in separate ziploc bags within a padded envelope roughly 18 x 12 cm or 7 x 5 inches. It took roughly 7 days (not business days) to get from China to Ottawa. The silicone skin (and zip4g if you ordered the bonus) come in separate ziploc bags within a padded envelope roughly 18 x 12 cm or 7 x 5 inches. No, it's backed by a WEALTHY company, with good marketing skills. Personally I've never liked the looks of the iPod, I can agree that the design is well thought out to some degree, but the features seem to have gotten a lesser polish.

I think for the most part, Apple is taking the "What will sell well to teenage girls" approach than the "What do current/prospective owners actually want" approach, at least regarding the feature set. The design is a bit feminine, the device is mind-numbingly simple ( Not to say women are stupid, but a majority of teenage girls are less than technological wizards. ) then they add picture support, though lacking the major features that would make it viable to anyone BUT teenagers, female or otherwise, features such as USB-Host, so that you don't have to be near a computer to put pictures on the device.

Not to say that it's DESIGNED for teenage girls, but the way they package it makes it seem like that's who they are marketing it towards with the simple interface, white face and shiny aluminum back, games, etc.

I view it as an elitist device, by an elitist company which dominates the market by oversaturating the public with advertisements, such as commercials, billboards, posters, subway cars, etc.

Marketing is an important part of any industry, Philips has had a 20GB Hard Disk MP3 player on the market for maybe 2 years now, but I have never seen it in the canadian market, or any other website apart from their own.
It doesn't matter who has the superior product if no one knows about it, it will never sell.
All Apple products are designed to be simple, Apple did invent the GUI.
Picture support was a feature I asked for after using iTunes for awhile and having spent the time to add Album Art to my mp3 files, obviously I wasn't the only one.
As for the aluminum back, well it does have a hard drive which generate some amount of heat.

you can change your order fairly easily if it hasn't already shipped..
go to lajo.biz and then click on "contact us" then login to there and go through the report a problem link and tell them what to change.. I did that and got my order changed within a few minutes..

Problem is the order isn't showing up on the list in customer service yet... since only orders where payment has been verified show up. Grrr. I have to play the waiting game. That's a lajo skin, like we've all been talking about, from http://lajo.biz. :P

One problem with your eBay purchase: The base Lajo skin does not include a screen protector, you need to buy this separately (unless the auction specified it was included). Lajo sells iShade's for this purpose for an extra $3.50. Seeing as I doubt you want to order a $3.50 product with $5 shipping directly from the source, you may want to look into getting a PDA screen protector or something instead. IMO the screen is very important to protect.

So my Lajo order shipped this morning. Even though my order was over $50 (before discounts) and 10 items, they shipped it using the regular shipping method. I thought they shipped via a faster method if you met these requirements--maybe I read the site wrong. Oh well, shipping was free since I spent $50 so it's all good.

Back to the headphone upgrade path. I went ahead and bought the Sony MDR-D66 Eggo (http://www.stanc.net/eggo/) headphones used for USD $70 shipped from the states. After listening to Dave Matthews Live in Central Park for a few hours now, they are great portable headphones. A little different than the Koss Porta Pros I also have. They are really comfortable as well. I kinda forgot I had them on when I got up and almost yoinked the cord out of the laptop. :)

The question is, are they worth USD$100? Tough call..

I haven't heard many complains about the covered click wheel. Silicon by nature grips, but since the covered click wheel area is made of thinner material this should be less of a problem. Also, if you wash the skin and rub it with baby powder it becomes more slick (and easier to use). FYI: THe exo2 does not cover the click wheel.

I also haven't heard many problems about not havng air holes. Most cases do not have air holes, although a few of the Lajo cases do. I personally prefer a flat back and I dont see any problem with that. I have never heard of anyone's iPod running too hot or overheating due to not having air holes

They ship from Hong Kong and shipping cost is $5 USD. I wasn't charged any duty or taxes. I think Lajo declares a low value on the package.

There's a chart comparing all of the 4G cases... on the top banner at the site click "features" and it'll bring up the chart. The iShades work with the 1.2mm cases as well, although they are meant for the 2mm cases. Many people have ordered the exo3x with the iShades and it works fine.

Yea unfortunatelly he's missing pics of a lot of the products so you have to go by what he has and use your imagination a bit. For reference, you can check this site (http://www.theistore.com/exocolors38.html#) to compare most of the colours (it displays the 3G case but the colours should be the same).

EDIT: Alternateively, I've heard that PDA screen protectors make a good substitute, but I'd try the iShade first (especially if it's free :P )

Look at the comparison table I mentioned earlier (go to the site, click on "features" on the top banner).

Deal 1 is for all cases in the chart without the "flat back" and Deal 2 is for all the cases with the "flat back" (it's the 10th feature on the chart).

The exostub lets you use a belt clip with the non-flat back cases. They have a spot on the back where you can put the stub and then attach it to the clip. I think the TPU cable case is just a clear case to put your headphones in. As for the bungee, it'll cost only $2.25 USD by next week! :D

The Lajo signature works fine for me in Firefox... however, many of the product pages don't (ie. viewing the preview images of the products etc).

You get volume discounts as follows:

The good thing is, bonus (free) items COUNT towards your number of items (during the free zip4g promotion they counted). Hopefully it's the same for the new promotions as well. PayPal and credit card are basically the same thing. All Lajo's credit card orders go through PayPal. I used my PayPal balance with the remainder funded from my credit card.

All the Lajo cases have a little loop on the side to attach to the bungee. Then you clip the bungee to your belt or something so that if you drop your iPod it'll "catch" it. Why wouldn't it be strong enough? iPods aren't that heavy. I'll let you know how well it works when mine arrives ;)

One of the clips wraps around the iPod (works with all 2mm cases), and the other attaches to the "insert" thingy on the back off the non-flat back cases. Check the comparison chart and look at the photos underneath (and click on the photos to see the product pages with more photos).

I'm a bit confused about the part of the chart that says zip4g belt hoster (what's a hoster?) and armband. When you click to buy the "hoster" it goes to the zip4g. The zip4g is a clear case that you can attach to your belt. However, the zip4g is meant to go on the bare iPod and not an iPod with a skin on. The armband says "coming soon". I don't see how these are features of the cases. So to answer your question, no the cases do not come with those features.

Minidisc Canada (http://www.minidisc-canada.com) sells both colours for the same price--$69.75. Personally, I don't really care about the image... same sound so who cares.

Ice is transparent, frost is frosted and snow is solid white.

The iShade should work fine with the exo3x--many people are using them together (including myself).

I prefer covered wheel but it's personal opinion I guess. I like the extra protection it offers.

Just got my Lajo skins in today. Everything seems to work in fine order. Might need to douse it a bit in the baby powder, but o/w it's all good. The zip case seems a bit flimsy. I don't see it lasting too long, but let's hope that I'm wrong.

edited to add: Just put my ipod in the zip case. It's a really snug fit. So snug in fact, that I can't even put my belt through the loop. Perhaps it would have been better to get the 40gb Zip case.

The Portapros are far more accurate sounding, by far the better headphone. The Sony's have a bloated, exaggerated bass, and are a bit muddy sounding. For some people, the Sony's have more "punch" and "excitement" but if you want to hear the music the way it was recorded, the Portapros are the more realistic sounding set.

I have a set of 71SL's, and the one thing about them is that they are comfortable, so I still use them whenever I know I'll be plugged in for a long time. The Portapros are very comfortable too but even those will tire my ear after a while.

it doesn't really do anything but provide a way for heat to escape. But the iPOD itself doesn't really get that hot. My personal opinion is that it doesn't look good aesthetically and allows dirt and dust to get in.

For some people, the Sony's have more "punch" and "excitement" but if you want to hear the music the way it was recorded, the Portapros are the more realistic sounding set.

I have a set of 71SL's, and the one thing about them is that they are comfortable, so I still use them whenever I know I'll be plugged in for a long time. The Portapros are very comfortable too but even those will tire my ear after a while.

It's personal opinion really and nobody can answer that for you. Do you want it to be transparent, semi-transparent or solid coloured? Personally I went with Ice (transparent). My second choice probably would've been frost and last snow--but I know others would choose snow first, so it's subjective.

Not if you want the extra protection. iSkins are roughly 2mm--and those are probably the most common skins out there. Once again, subjective and personal opinion.

As I mentioned above, I haven't used it yet. Others here have though, and I believe they're all happy. The majority in other forums are happy with this combo as well. Worse case if you have problems, buy a PDA screen protector.

I have a pair of 3G Lajo cases I got for free (test drives) and they're 2mm. I also have a few 4G exo3x's I ordered. Of course I haven't used them first hand. The 2mm have more structure and are more solid, while the 1.2mm cases are thinner and less bulk. My preference is 1.2mm.

The area covering the wheel is thinner than the rest of the case. Maybe someone who has tried their Lajo skin already can say how well it works.

I've heard it works fine though... scrolling just doesn't occur as quickly... but the baby powder thing should help with that by making it more slick.

I entered province after my city (ie. "Toronto, ON" in the city box) and my order arrived fine.

If you didn't do this I'd contact customer service to have it fixed... although with city and postal code it will reach you fine either way.

Came in plastic ziplock bags, and the declared value was 1.40, so no duty/customers whatever. Came in regular mail.

I found putting the skin on at first, to be a real pain in the ass, but if you put baby powder/talcum powder inside the skin, they'll slide on alot easier. Silicone attracts lint/dust like a mofo though.

Looking at how small and thin these things are, makes you wonder just how high Lajo's profit margins are geez...

I didn't find it all that bad. Yes it was a tight fit--but it has to be. I mean it wasn't easy but it wasn't so bad that it was frustrating for me. I didn't end up using baby powder.

haha, I'm just trying to keep RFDers informed... I check the site often so I report what I learn back here. I've already received 2 free cases (although they are 3G) by getting in on test drives and any key holder can do that.

I've made a few bucks from the key program but that's hardly been worth my time. It says Lajo 1, Lajo 2, etc. instead of "Cash" under description. The source still has an order id though (ie. persons name followed by a number). One of my cash items actually has the same name in the source as one of my Lajo 1 items.

My Lajo 1 entries have been for .08, .19, .19 and .73

I doubt they are random--there must be some sort of criteria whether it is for multi-level referral orders, multi-level referral joinings, or direct-referral "browsing". There must be some system behind it.

It means you can't spend the coupons/cash for 15 days. Just like when you cash a cheque, the bank holds it for x days until it clears and you're not allowed to withdraw/spend the money until then.

Correct. I didn't bother though, the smell doesn't really bother me.

Only the edges touch though. I think the material is soft enough that it won't scratch the screen. Personally, I'm not worrying about it.

Well, I've been using my Lajo xskin for a week now, and between the skin and the ishade, is finally ready for everyday regular use, and I think the quality is great. One question though, anyone get a "bubble" of condensation (i'm guessing it is) underneath the ishade? It keeps reappearing.I have to keep moving the ishade slightly around, to get rid of it, it's annoying. As if the ishade isn't able to sit flush against the screen.

Btw, no scratches from the Ishade so far, so all is good.

Well, I've been using my Lajo xskin for a week now, and between the skin and the ishade, is finally ready for everyday regular use, and I think the quality is great. One question though, anyone get a "bubble" of condensation (i'm guessing it is) underneath the ishade? It keeps reappearing.I have to keep moving the ishade slightly around, to get rid of it, it's annoying. As if the ishade isn't able to sit flush against the screen.

Btw, no scratches from the Ishade so far, so all is good.
I think the iShade is designed so that only the edges are supposed to touch the screen. The middle area is not supposed to be in contact with the screen.

I too have the bubble near the centre though and the iShade does in fact touch. I'm not too sure how to go about fixing it. It doesn't bother me all that much though, so I try to just ignore it...

anyone see (or have) the new sony ex-81 canal phones? they now have an over the ear clip and reportedly better sound reproduction. i saw a pair on ebay for $52 us from Japan.

as for skins i'm still undecided on which to get. it's between the Evo2 which i can get online from compusmart or the lajo case. the problem with lajo are the sheer number of options. i thought the 3x seemed pretty good but none of the current deals apply to that model :|

"fb" means flat back. If it doesn't say that it has a different kind of back. View the 4G comparsion chart to see what I mean (click on features on the top banner)

"flp" means the bottom flips open. Non-flip cases have a cutout for the connectors at the bottom, flip cases do not (I'm assuming it's the same for Minis)

i just picked up the remote+headphone addon (at $36..what an incredible deal!). the headphones are identical to the standard ipod headphones; even the cord length appears to be the same. the remote is tiny (about the size of a small eraser) with a polished mirror-like surface to match the back of the ipod. 1 rocker button for volume, 2 for FF/RW, 1 for play/pause/off. a side switch locks the controls. the clip is different from other remotes i've seen. it runs the length of the remote such that it resembles a mini hair clip. works great for dress shirts, not so good if you have a tshirt (etc). other minor quibbles is that you don't hear any indicator beep to let you know you've hit the button and it would have been nice if it had an lcd panel for display functions. but hey its shiny and has the apple logo on the back :)

edit - as for the skin i ended up ordering the optex case from radtech in the states. the colours looked really enticing, it covers the wheel and screen, it adds nearly nothing to the thickness of the ipod, and you don't have any of the issues a rubber/silicon case has. it offers zero shock protection but i bought it just for protecting the ipod against scratches. here's hoping it meets up to my expectation. (i think one other member here has one and was pleased with it)

I don't understand how it took 25 minutes to get your ipod into the skin with a good fit. I did it in my first try in about 5 minutes, and didn't have to use talcum on the inside.

The case will pick up lint in your pocket easily, so I strongly suggest that you apply talcum/baby powder to the outside of the case. The silicone over the click wheel is also much smoother after rubbing powder on to it and makes scrolling much easier. I re-dust my skin every two weeks or whenever it regains its tacky feeling.

I am thinking about placing an order shortly, but just had a couple of questions.

It seems as most people went with exo3x4g. I was leaning more towards the exoflp 4g. If you bought the 3x4g, why did you choose this over the flp 4g? Was it the price difference? The flp 4g is almost twice as much, but with 55% off, it pretty much negates the difference to me.

I guess the vent holes are not that big a deal, so I was considering the exoflpfb 4g as well. The other big differences between those two are disk insert/flat back. What exactly does disk insert mean? Also what do these not having easy access to the sync port mean? Another person asked the same thing previous but I didn't really see a response for it.

Also what is the difference between the SWVClip and the TwistClip? Is it just the mobility of the twist clip?

I could never spend that much either. Although I'd like to try out the Shure e3 or e2 ones or the Etymotic ER-6i Isolator Earphones.... one day. However I got the Sony Fontopia mdr-ex71 in white and they are pretty good for its cost. you can get it shipped to you from audiocubes.com or buy it here in Canada but in black (white is only available in Asia).

Also I have 3 lajo skins but I think I want to buy a Contour Showcase one...

So as a summary, can someone give an explanation of these:

*Lajo Disk Insert
The disk insert attachment is on the non-flatback cases. It is used to attach the SWVClip.

*Not Having Easy Access To Sync Port
Easy access to sync port means that the port is open at all times--just like the headphone jack is open at all times. It just means there is a "hole" at that point in the case.

Non-easy access means that it is covered... for example, the flip bottom cases have non-easy acccess because it is covered unless you flip open the bottom of the case.

*Difference Between SWVClip & TwistClip
The SWVClip attaches to the non-flatback cases using the disk insert, as mentioned above. This works with all 2.0mm non-flatback skins.

The TwistClip "grips" the sides of the iPod/skin and is a bit bulkier. This works with all 2.0mm skins--flatback and non-flatback.

The prices listed on the site are regular prices. When you add it to your cart it will reflect the 55% off sale.

The site is definately trustable. Their customer service isn't always the greatest but in the end everything will always work out. Shipping is pretty quick too, especially considering the distance.

I'm going to be getting an Ipod real soon and wanted to know which Skin to get? Everyone seems to love the iSkin Evo2 but I read it had to be removed to work with a dock. Is that true? I don't need anything with a belt clip, it's just going in my pocket, but I'd like something that'll prevent the chrome back and screen from getting all scratched up, and that can be used with a dock. This isn't so important, but I'd like it to be clear, or like iSkin's Arctic White and not make the ipod very big. Any suggestions? :confused:

if you're intent on getting a silicon case you need to get one that has the bottom 1/3 of it chopped off so that you 'bend' it off of the ipod. i'm happier just slipping my sleevz off when i need to use the dock.

i suggest the eXoflp 4g from Lajo... very durable and its not thick at all...
