Here's a post I just added to the Pepsi iPod thread in Freebies, but I figured theres a good chance most people would miss it in that mountain of posts:
Is anybody really able to keep up with this thread anymore ?
I'm spending enough time filling out surveys and entering PINs, and there's some useful stuff in this thread, but a LOT of garbage too.
And there's 3 more months to go.
How about a new forum, just for this contest ? This one thread already has more posts than a lot of the general topic forums. It would be temporary like the Back to School forums, and it would save a lot of redundant posts.
A lot of the posts in that thread are repeats of old questions, because no one can find the answers in a thread that big. It would be really, really helpful if we could split that one thread into multiple topics of discussion, so it would be possible to actually keep up with the good stuff.
Consider this: that thread is already absurdly long, and less than 10% of the contest has passed. if it continues like it is, it will be absolutely useless.

I could update the first page with a Q&A summary. I just need someone to compile this and I wil ammend the first post.

just a suggestion..
subscribe to the thread, and setitup so you get a daily report of the posts sent in your inbox.
making a new forum area would be nice but i dbout RFD will give them (pepsi co) the attention if they're not sponsoring it...

I don't think that a new forum is required, users can search through the existing topic for questions and answers.
I don't think a forum filled up with posts about Pepsi would clarify everything enough to justify this. All the forums are filled with repetative posts of people asking questions over and over; it doesn't seemed to have helped there.
I prefer RFD with the small number of forums; it's easier to locate information, instead of going through 20 forums.

Plus as soon as u make another pepsi forum i give it a couple of hours before it grows out of control like the current one.

In general, we try not to have too many different forums and when we do have a forum it would be a general category such as Sports or Food & Drink rather than for a specific promotion. Unless Pepsi came on and wanted to sponsor a forum, I don't think this is something we'd normally do and thus not too likely.

I realize it wouldn't quite match the other forums, but it a question of usability.
That one thread has had 2200 posts in 7 days. If it continues at that rate, in about 3 weeks that single thread will have more posts than the Sports & Fitness Forum has in total. In 4 weeks, more than the Comments & Suggestions Forum.
That single thread has more posts than 3 of the closed forums in "Past Promotions"
It's not a wide range of topics, but it's obvious people have a LOT to say.
Hey - here's an idea. vBulletin can have sub-forums, how about a Pepsi iPod sub-forum in Freebies ?

Somehow I have the feeling that any subforum is going to be just as overrun. Instead of 1 thread with lots of posts, it will be many threads with many posts. it'll still be a mess.
A sticky with a FAQ of everything important seems like the better idea that's been mentioned.

I don't understand how that makes any sense. A sub-forum is organized just like a forum, so the posts would be sorted into threads and organized by date. Several forums on this board have hundreds of thousands of posts, and they're not "overrun"
The ease of use would come from picking and choosing which threads you want to read. I'd like to read about new winners, new ideas for strategy, stuff like that but along with that, I'm forced to read a lot of useless crap. Flame wars about cheating, questions that have been answered 3 or 4 times before.
As for updating the first post - The first new post I started reading this morning was asking who won from RFD. That's the one thing that is updated in the first post.

i dont see the need or the point in having a new sub-forum. if you look at the thread most of it is just noise with very little *new* content. a single thread serves the purpose just fine. if needed the mods can lock the existing one at any time and create a new thread.

Sounds about right, doing so would give Pepsi even more visibility that they were not paying for. Although, I do have to say this is a great promo by Pepsi...
Have you contacted Pepsi about any potential partnerships/ad deals?

Not to crap on your thread here, but I read the other day that PEPSI originally wanted the contest to be through purchase only, and because of some Goverment law or restriction they were lawfully forced to make it possible to enter the contest without any purchase..I beleive I still have the article I will check.. :|
