View Full Version : The End of The Simpsons

Wow, I'd never thought I'd see the day when this show would be in talks of ending. I knew it couldn't go on forever...but..my children...they must enjoy the antics of Bart and Homer. Poor deprived children.

Anyway, news is, Matt Groening wants to end the Simpsons in 2008 with 365 episodes.

"I'd love to get to 365 episodes, so there's one for every day of the year with no repeats."

I'm a huge Simpsons fan, but I'll be the first to admit they've really gone downhill the past few seasons, because they've run out of stuff to do!

Part of me would enjoy a break from them...maybe if they were to all take 5 years off or something so we can digest all the good episodes, then we'll take some more...kinda like Family Guy :)

I believe Family Guy is due to start in 2005, along with Seth's new toon, American Dad.

I agree. It just hasn't been the same. It's been a great run.

Although I like the idea of 365 episodes.

Simpsons along with Seinfeld seem to always be playing. Both shows you can easilly watch a couple episdoes every day.

How about another source other than Ireland Online? Yes, their CONTRACT has been extended for another 4 years, but that doesn't mean it's going to end in 4 years. ALL television shows have contracts, and the Simpsons isn't any different.

Ireland Online just happened to be the source page loaded from Google News...but if it makes you happier, here's more:

The Sun (http://www.thesun.co.uk/article/0,,2001320029-2004460533,00.html)

FT (http://specials.ft.com/creativebusiness/FT3GRP48M0D.html)

And I've read about it today in the Metro and 24 Hours. Although they are Free press, just to show that the source isn't only from Ireland.

Although I do like your article more. BTW. Is it just me, or is that article dated May 2, 2002?

I wish it had ended after 10 seasons, considering how the show has turned into a horrible parody of itself and everything else...that said, if it's going to end now, 365 sounds pretty good.

its been a good run, the writers are really just running out of ideas. at least we've got family guy to look forward too, i think they're like the simpson's but they push the envelope a little bit more.

How ironic. 2008 is a leap year, with 366 days. :) They should make one additional special episode that would only be shown once every four years, on February 29th.

it'll be sad to see it end.

At least i know how many season sets i'll need to buy still.

Hopefully family guy will have a long healthy run!

i agree that some of the new episodes are the funniest I have seen as well. Especially the one with Raynier Wolfcastle's bankruptcy auction at the beginning. When Homer starts the tetris sequence, I nearly wet myself!

Finally.

The state the new episodes are right now is really laughable. ;)
I hope they wrap things up with a few high quality seasons like the ones from the good ol' days. I think the major thing that's wrong with the new Simpsons is the lack of "emotion" in the characters plus the fact that everyone is flat and just act plain stupid (they did before too, but they still had character and personality that made them unique).

Or South Park. South Park is probably one of the most offensive shows on TV(which is why I love it :) ).

Half the stuff that gets put in there you really wonder how they got it in there.

They should have ended Simpsons at season 8, and they shouldn't have ended Futurama.

It would be kind of neat if they could continue doing the treehouse of horror episodes though.. those are always great!

Its ASTOUNDING just how the Simpsons has made its way into pop culture. It has singlehandedly invented amazing phrases that people use without thinking about it:

1. "Doh." Before the Simpsons, when did you hear that?
2. "Eat my shorts"
3. "Aye Carumba"
4. Made up words even: "cromulent" and "embiggons"
5. "I bent my wookie"
6. Tomacco?
....

The list can go on forever. In fact, I often find myself relaying ideas via Simpson's metaphors..."That's like the episode where Homer thinks the rock will keep tigers away, so he buys it from Lisa."

Also, its even funnier to think how much knowledge you've acquired from the Simpsons without knowing it. Often times, their parodies of famous movies/shows/facts actually serves as the basis for real information! For example, who knows what Maplethorpe is? We've kinda figured out he photographs naken men because of that book that Homer picks up in the bookstore when he and Marge are looking for self-help on spicing up their marriage. That's what I'm talking about: information by osmosis.

I'll miss them when they're gone, but their best days are far behind them.

South Park is AWESOME. I think part of the reason why these shows are so popular is specifically because they push the envelope.

PS. Like my avatar? Its "evil" Stan.

Think so?

I can't comment on South Park, as I've never seen it. Early in its run, Simpsons drew a lot of fire for "pushing the envelope" for a cartoon - people equated "cartoon" with "perfectly acceptable for all ages" and were shocked to hear their 4-yr-olds saying "Eat my shorts".

Simpsons went far beyond that, though. It's often very intelligent humour and tends to be very timely. And it got past people being upset that this style of humour was packaged in a cartoon.

"Pushing the envelope" in terms of being as offensive as you can will not result in a lasting market share. Actually, that's not even pushing the envelope - anyone could do it. You just have to hit on the formula that still lets you get broadcast while shocking the viewing populace.

The thing about shock, though, is it wears off. South Park isn't shocking anymore. The American Pie-style movies aren't shocking anymore after 20 knock-offs. And when the shock goes away, "shock humour" isn't funny anymore.

Simpsons, though, is still popular years after people stopped being shocked by it.

(My 2 cents.)

South park has done some episodes that are far past anything simpsons ever tried to do.

One that comes to mind is the epsiode where Timmy and Jimmy(the two handicaped kids that they make fun of) are training for the special olympics. Jimmy takes steroids, gets beafed up, and kicks ass at the olympics, smoking records. He also gets cranky, beats his girlfreind and mom.

At the same time Cartman fakes being ******** so he can enter the special olympics and win the $10,00 grand prize. But he ends up finishing dead last.

That's pretty much par for the course as far as south park is concerned. ;)

Wow, are they really going to continue on for another 4 years? I thought the actors were already fighting to end the show last year because they asked for a huge raise. It must be so boring and tedious for them .. doing the same thing for 15+ years ...

I haven't seen terribly many of the newer ones, so I can't really say. Simpsons is constantly showing reruns, though, and the major Simpsons-heads I know will watch them again and again because they age well and are still funny the second, third or fourth time through. That's something shock-based humour can't match.
