I've never heard of this movie.
Is the DVD out in Asia yet?
Is the actual movie any good (looks quite stylized).
Zhang Ziyi is always a reason to watch ;).

Last I looked (maybe 2 months ago) it was only coming out in theatres over Asia sometimes this year. The dvd was not available in any format at the time either.

Really crappy CAM versions avail. at Pac Mall without English subs, in mandarin only. What a waste of my $6. And the salesperson lied to me, saying there were subs and the picture quality was high.

Is this a rehash of the older one? I believe there is one that is similar to this. Like what they did with Wu Mountain?

i saw it at the toronto filmfest.
on the big screen, it looks beautiful and the sound is great but the story, on the other hand.....yikes...
it starts off great but then the 2nd half is very iffy...

My sister actually picked up a bootleg dvd of it when she went to mainland China about a month ago. The quality of the video and audio of it is just a bit below that of a real dvd. She calls it a 'projector' version; meaning the bootleg is shot in a private room with no audience (hence no audience laughing/clapping/coughing/etc.).
HOWEVER, the English subs are terrible and the timing of the subs are way off. The actor will say at least 3 sentences and the subs will show 3 words. Even though I have an advanced copy of it, I don't want to ruin it by watching it without being able to understand the plot.
Best bet for us is just to wait for it to come to theatres or maybe on dvd in Asia if it comes out before.
Side: Zhang Ziyi is so hot.

wah... forget the bootleg dvd's, house of flying daggers will hit the big screen in canada on december 17, 2004. (thank the success of hero for the quick release ...and sony classics, miramax sucks!) ...speaking of which, here's the sony classics house of flying daggers site (http://www.sonyclassics.com/houseofflyingdaggers/trailer-open.html)
i saw house of flying daggers at the film festival as well ...great visuals and special effects, but horrible ending.

Looks so anime-ish I'm definitely watching.
BTW, how much "skin" was shown? The trailer seems to point to some romps in the fields ...

...interesting, i just noticed that in the trailer it says that house of flying daggers will be the official chinese entry in the best foreign film category for the 2005 academy awards. i guess 2046 won't be considered since it won't be released in the states this year.
but i guess it also means that house of flying daggers can be considered for nominations in the mainstream categories as well ...it's a shame christopher doyle didn't get a nomination for hero ...or even better, for "in the mood for love." crosses fingers for "2046" nominations in 2006! :D

Just came back from SH. The official version isn't out yet.
IMHO, ZYM movies are more about cinematography than plot. This means you need to see it on the big screen to enjoy it. Home theatres just won't do (unless you have a 500 seat home theatre :cheesygri )

Think Miramax is putting this out as they did with Hero; I'll wait for a theatrical /North American DVD release.

How do you like Yesasia? Have you tried DDDHouse (HK) or Malmusic (Vancouver)? Any duty issues with Yesasia? I have tried DDDhouse once before...pretty good and inexpensive.

It was my first order with YesAsia, shipping today so I'll let you know when it gets here how duty is.
I noticed koreandvds.com (I think thats the link, I'm at work so not trying all of them out) has it for 10.99 which is a few dollars less than YesAsia.

Is it legit or some BS region 0 bootleg like the crap from Ebay. All the stuff in places like Pacific Mall are usually the chinese bootlegs.

Just finished watching it, I can't believe Samanosuke (the japanese person who modelled Onimusha) can speak Mandarin!!! IMO, I thought it was a pretty good movie. Less action than Hero, but what they do with projectiles is pretty neat (although impossible in reality). The music was very good (done by the japanese), and by the time the ending came, the story comes together. Highlight for spoilers:
I can't believe it was Samanosuke vs Andy Lau! Who the heck to root for..... =( It was more for the love story than the battle, which all pieced together nicely by the end which hit me when it all came together.
The fights were well done, similar to Hero, no blurry Hollywood type fights although a lot seemed computerized, daggers for sure, the bamboo, and some others.
So I wonder what's next for this director =) I can't wait.

what's so surprising about Takeshi Kaneshiro speaking Mandarin? it's his mother tongue. his mom's Chinese-Taiwanese and his pops is Japanese.
btw, i heard the current legit DVD releases of the movie stinks. video was blurry and the audio is average. wait for the special edition to come out or wait for the Region 1 edition.

Actually, that's what I was told that he has a Taiwanese mother, but I didn't expect him to actually know how to speak the language that's all. Since I've only seen him speak Japanese.

y'know...just a few years ago, his japanese was crap when compared to his speaking in mandarin. he speaks more naturally in mandarin.
he also speaks cantonese and english. check out his american movie "Too Tired to Die" where he co-stars with Mira Sorvino. his cantonese is okay even though he's got a mandarin accent. but take the subtitles away and you'll have a hard time figuring out what he says. (tried it when watching the cantonese dub of "Disney's Tarzan"....good god....i had a hard time understanding what he's saying)

Received my copy this week- YesAsia ships from Mississauga so I paid no customs and no taxes.
For the movie itself though I was very disappointed. The story was not bad I guess, but I just felt like nothing ever goes on so I ended up falling asleep and missed the end. I wouldn't say its a bad movie, but I wouldn't go out of my way to watch it again.

Anyone else unsuccessful in ordering any DVDs/VCDs from Yesasia? I tried last night and it wouldn't allow me, a first timer, to put the order through....went elsewhere (prices were notably higher) to order instead. The reason was the items (DVDs and VCDs) selected were not permitted to my location (I assume country) and that I should select something else. Too bad the prices for the items I wanted were well priced.

that movie was dumb, well...at least the plot, everything else was great...
but honestly, what a stupid plot, it has enough big holes for the red army to drive tanks through.
I felt sorry for the actors, having to deal with such a plot line....but this thing will defenitely be winning some awards, the scenery, acting, costumes, music all deserve it.
Its worth watching, but don't take the plot too seriously.
