I dunno, I felt unfulfilled after watching it.. Too much was resolved with dumb things, it wasn't believable (well, this is Superman but I mean in context even).

Highlight for spoiler:

And the black kryptonite, what a dumb thing... that's what writers do when they've written themselves into a corner and are too lazy to go back and fix it. So what does black kryptonite acutally do? Kill ghost Kryptonians? Heal kryptonians with a split personality disorder?? Does he have to keep using black kryptonite, or is it a one time thing? How did Dr. Swanson know it would have that effect, not having any other kryptonians that have split into two personalities handy to test it on? Sorry, but that part was LAME.

It had its moments (Luthor in jail was cool, the flying was cool except overdone), but overall one of the lower points of the series for me.

Clark Kent cannot fly. I thought the episode was good, but I didnt even know black Kryptonite existed. Now my wife and I can watch them together fianlly since she watched all of season 3 in a week. Season should be good, effect were good. And the girl that played Lois has a huge rack.

In the past (not smallville, but to Superman fans), it is known that there are other type/colour of kryptonites. Maybe more explanation will come later.

True, but there's never been a black kryptonite. I don't mind the show taking some liberties with the "canon", but inventing a new colour of kryptonite that just happens to solve a specific nebulous problem is just too contrived. A perfect example of deus ex machina.

But they've been pretty good so far, so I'll take this as an abberation. I just hope they don't get too wild with the mysticism (ritual knives, broken crystals hidden in egyptian statues, strange tattoos, etc).

To me the show should be about how a boy became a super man.

Think about it. In the past, we've only seen superman (i.e. his adult life). Maybe this black one only comes into play this point in his life, and that's probably why we never have heard of it before.

I liked the episode in general. Should be a good start to a new season.

Spoiler Questions:

But the black Kryptonite thing was weird. Too convenient. How did Jonathan just come out of the coma? What the frick happened to Lana ...........

Good to have the show back on ...

I thought the opener sucked. I've watched religously since the show began, but it's going downhill since the middle of last season. I've seen quite a few season/series premieres the last couple of weeks and this was the worst of the bunch. I wish I had spent the hour playing the Sims 2 instead of sitting through that yawn-fest.

Not really; you're omiting all those Superboy & Legion of Super-Heroes stuff that pretty much covered his life BEFORE he became an adult. This "black" stuff was never mentioned before. It's like some of the crap they did on Enterprise - just taking too many liberties with accepted canon.

Anyone else remember anything about that holy trinity of relics? Seems like they made it up as part of the "legend".

Answer about Lana:
She touch the tomb of Princess Theroux. She has now either become the second of 3 relics or is the polar opposite of Kal-el. The boyfriend mentioned that Princess Theroux "kicked a lot of arse and broke a lot of hearts". Supposedly, when all 3 relics are united, Kal-el will start his crusade or fulfill his destiny. I'm guessing she's the slayer of Kal-el and she'll be replaced by Lois Lane after Kal-el is destroyed.

Well, in terms of "accepted canon" there's no such thing as red kryptonite either, so they're not straying any further off course. The problem with comics is that there is no such thing as canon. There used to be about a dozen varieties of kryptonite, but they re-wrote Supe's history, and now green is the only version in comics. All the superboy and Legion stuff dissapeared, too.

I'm just dissapointed they broke the "no flights, no tights" rule

That is what happens when I HAVEN'T read a comic book in years and years! Guess they call them "graphic novels" now...

Hey, did anyone noticed that Clark's mum has a tatoo on her lower back in the scene where she's in the hospital snogging Jonathan/Johnathan?

Is that actually her or some extra? Notice that really really hot arse as well?

Yup...I was surprised they broke that rule. But then I read an interview of one of the writers or producers (can't remember his name) and his explanation was that since there isn't much precedence regarding Clark when he was growing up, what's to say that he may have had powers or developed abilities that may or may not stay with him as he grows older.

I guess he was trying to say that this is some sort of Kryptonian puberty??

Meh. Just have Lana in the shower for the whole show. Everyone's happy.

Too bad they used a body double for the back-lit shot, though.

Black Kryptonite did exist, perhaps not in the formal comic canon (I'm not totally familar with it) but...

True Superman fans will realize that the (everyman) Clark Kent vs Evil Kal-El (aka Superman) battle is inspired by Superman III (Filmed in Calgary!) and that black kryptonite did exist...although in Superman III, black kryptonite (Earth synthesized Kryptonite with tar carbons substituted for elements missing on Earth) was the substance that caused the evil side of Superman to surface. In Smallville, they used it in reverse, the black kryptonite separated the supressed Clark Kent out of the evil Kal-El.

People always give Superman III a bad time but I personally love that movie (just to see so many shots of Alberta) but also for the very cool evil Superman, which was excellent acting from Christopher Reeve. So much more evil than Tom Welling's wussy Kal-El. You could say that this is a future manifestation of the latent Kal-El in Superman's adult years.

I thought the first episode of the new season was pretty good. I agree with others that the flying was overdone and the split personality issue is a pretty lame plot device (like on a Grade B Soap Opera). I am looking forward to how the Lana-Clark-Lois triangle is going to develop (or if it does). Hopefully Lana and Clark will never get together (remember what happened to Lois and Clark???).

Yeah, that was somewhat disappointing. However, the double has great body! Nice curves!

That wasn't black kryptonite; it was more like cigarette flavour kryptonite. :D

At least that made some sense, tar was the bad stuff in cigarettes and corrupted the kryptonite and corrupted superman.. The black kryptonite in Smallville is pure deus ex machina.

Or maybe Dr. Swanson got into his wheelchair when he accidentally dropped his smoke onto a kryptonite rock he was studying and it blew up and converted into black kryptonite!

The season opener all in all was very well done I think. As for straying from the "no-flights, no tights" rule I think that most fans wanted to see a tidbit of show even though Clark wouldn't be able to do that. I don't know if it was overdone...for me that wasn't the let down of the season opener. For me the let down was centered around Margot Kidder(Lois Lane from the movies). Man did she look horrid. Rough. That and the whole Black Kryptonite thing. Whether it exists or not is irrelavent. To me it was just way to easy to do, like taking the easy way out. All in all that part was really weak.
I also want to thank all you people for revealing the fact that Kristen used a body double for the shower scene....all my little fantasies have now been crushed... not that I really thought she did it, but at least if I didn't admit it I could still hold on to my fantasy....lol. I think this season will heat up and be one of the best ever, because the whole "wall of wierd" villan thing has been done repeatedly. They really have to work out the character development and move this series to the next level...or end it. I hope they take it to the next level myself. I've said it before in other forums/threads and I'll say it again. I would really like to see a big screen movie from this cast...I think it would be awesome! Lets see the boy become a super man! As it was said before, that is what this series is all about.

She was in Superman III, the one with the evil Superman. Markot Kidder didnt look that great, another casualty of bad plastic surgery. Did the duck lip thing like Meg Ryan

yea in one of the old movies, there was a lana, and it was played by the same lady currently playing clark's mom.
