Thanks.
I have a Breitling that I wear as my everyday watch which is not as old as my Rolex but is in more need of servicing so I'll have to take care of that first. I might consider having the dial on my Breitling changed from the current grey to black if it's possible. I never knew you can have the dial changed, how did you know about this did you hear from someone or you just asked them.

Don't know anything about changing Breitling dials and what their policy is about that. But changing Rolex dials was relatively common knowledge on Timezone.com when it was allowed at Rolex USA.

so were you able to pick it up the same day? I always thought that it will take Rolex Canada a few days to return your watch, even a simple verification, they say it will take 7 business days

it was a few days. For me, it took 2 business days to get the emailed estimate. You could certainly ask when you get there if they can quickly look at your watch (maybe go first thing in the morning).

I've always been a high end Seiko fan, they make some pretty solid watches imo and won't completely break the bank buying them.

Hows the Eco-Drive feature working out? I've read about people with issues finding enough lighting to keep the charge. Have you ever encountered any problems with loss of charge?

I have one of these as well. I have never needed to worry about the charge, seems like it gets enough from basic day to day usage. Maybe if your leaving it in the box all year round it might not be getting it's charge ;)

Just an update from my Seiko 5 I just got....it's the newer 23 jewel movement and for the past few weeks since I got it...it has kept perfect time with my Casio atomic solar watch. So needless to say, I'm actually mighty impressed as I thought I would be rectifying the time every week with this automatic.

I think I'm hooked....I might buy another.

It looks pretty swish too.....

OK I am not a watch aficionado but here is my experience and a question. A few years back I bought a Seiko "Kinetic" watch which was supposed to power itself, every time you move your wrist the gears would spin around charging up the battery. The sales lady said it would never need a new battery. Well a few years later the watch dies, now it is a different story, it doesn't need a new battery but it needs a new "power cell", same thing as a battery, different name. $100.00 later the watch is fixed but dies again a year later and I haven't bothered to fix it again. So for anyone wanting to buy one of these watches, it is a scam, stay away.

Now my question is about the Luminox watch, I found this one online,
http://www.llbean.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?storeId=1&catalogId=1&langId=-1&categoryId=52507&productId=898070&qs=5686484_********
ordered from the U.S. it will be $387.50 U.S. delivered including shipping taxes and duties, is there any Canadian source that will sell it online for less, I couldn't find it by searching Google.

You can do way better on Amazon.com http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=amb_link_5641212_83?ie=UTF8&node=379281011&hidden-keywords=Luminox&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-4&pf_rd_r=135D4TYKDFTVYQ09345G&pf_rd_t=1401&pf_rd_p=385240801&pf_rd_i=1000145891

Have a look through..it looks like that model can be had from $190-260 or so. Shipping should be $30 max, you may or may not get dinged for tax from customs. If it's USPS delivery (my Seiko was) you might not get charged anything extra.

Seriously..I'll order from Amazon again in a heartbeat. Prices were good and there's no chance of the shady E-bay dealer.

Thanks for the tip. However when I went to checkout from the Amazon.com site I got a warning message stating that they could not ship this item to Canada. I might get someone in the U.S. to order it for me if I can't find a good price in Canada.

Each Amazon sellers have their own shipping terms. Sometimes, for the same item you will have 5 or more different sellers and some of the do ship to Canada. If you have someone in the US, you can get free shipping (from some Amazon sellers), but you will have to wait until you can go to the US and pick it up or have your US contact ship it to you as a gift :cheesygri .

I'm planning on going to Buffalo to shop, and just wondering if watches in the states are a lot cheaper than in Canada? If so which store? And what about comparing to fargotime? I don't know what kind of brands I want yet, but probably an automatic watch for about $400-$500.
And I'm not considering buying it online because I want to try them on to see how they look on my skinny wrist.

Thanks.

That the 23 jewel mechanism? My Seiko 5 is still keeping the same time as my Casio atomic watch after over 1 month.

I've decided I'm going to look at collecting watches under $300, I'm not too fussed about the bling of Rolex etc now that I can see what kind of quality you can get in watches in this price range. I'm incredibly impressed at the Seiko's quality.

There's also Vaughn Mills, but I can't remember the dealer. They are right outside Bass Pro. I looked at a Hamilton, but they were reallly thick and you could feel the rotor spinning, which may be annoying.

The Rolex service is actually a pretty decent deal considering the care they take to refinish the watch. Most other manufacturers will charge similar rates (*cough* Omega/Swatch) and not even do any refinishing unless you explicitly pay for it.

Ummm...refinishing the watch is part of the standard service. You are the first person to ever say that they don't. You do not need to ask for it to be done as its part of the service.

anyone have any input on this watch? invicta 8926
http://zeitlose-eleganz.com/res/8926/8926_11.gif

Most Invictas are OK, supposedly some are lemons and need to be returned right away. It would seem that almost all of their watches are a knockoff of something else.

I just bought this from Tourneau in Las Vegas for $200.

Bought it from a Canadian Authorized Dealer. Feel free to pm me if you need the AD information. The dealer is located in Montreal.

They still have the Beige color face one for sale (I think they are ran out of black dial version tho) and the list price is approx. $2025 + tax (GST only if you are not Quebec resident) now I believe..

If you are interested in Guess' watches..You should go for their Gc Swiss Made collection..their price is very reasonable and they look great..

@tsis3

thanks for the suggestion.. I really like the 41002G1 model (the roman numerals on it really suits my taste) after a little looking around on ebay. But it's considerably out of my price range. Was only looking to spend max max 200$.

I think im just going to get the G12578L (it's actually a silver steel band version of the picture of the black watch i posted). Black one, worried it'll get easily soiled and dirty. Plus, the silver band version is a little bit more appropriate for more formal occasions. The silver band can probably suffer more scratching before it becomes noticeable.

With the proper tools, you can re-size any metal bands yourself. I think its better than giving it to the watch maker to do. You can take your time and be very careful. Watch maker may not do that. He can scratch your band by mistake. Its pretty easy to scratch, I've seen so many micro scratches in friend's watches. And of course, they don't give you a new one if they scratch it.

When you re-size bands or remove back (to change batteries), I suggest you use sticky tape (scotch) and tape the entire band. This way, your tools won't scratch it at all. You can hammer the pins right thru the tape.

Here's a general guide:
http://www.pmwf.com/Watches/WatchSchool/WS%2014%20How%20to%20Resize%20Common%20Bracelets/WS%2014%20How%20to%20Resize%20Bracelets.htm#Screwe d%20pin%20bracelets

After you get your tools, not too expensive BTW, you can help your friends do it too. I do that, and they are all very appreciative of it.

See my post above. Just don't have the false impression that the shop (watch maker) won't scratch your watch. They do many times.

^ That's a clean looking watch.

Personally, I don't get the point of having an analog and a digital display at the same time. Maybe too fancy for my taste, but if I had $70 right now I'd probably consider that or a KENNETH COLE watch.

Anyhow, just getting an opinion from watch connoisseurs here...

Is it ok to buy a used Rolex?

I'm just eyeing an old Datejust or an Air King (but I'm leaning more into getting a Datejust), which ranges from 2-3k.

Be careful if you're in the market for a used Rolex. If it's too good to be true, it probably is. A lot of fake have propped up in the last few years which are very hard to tell, short of opening the case. A special warning if you're buying rare vintage pieces like the Newman Daytonas, double red SeaDwellers, comex and the list goes on. People have actually cannibalized genuine watches to make these fakes because they're worth tens of thousands and can go up to the $100Ks.

As for the Patek, I'm very lucky to have received something like that. Every night I take it out of its box, wind it and admire the movement. A timeless classic indeed, but just too formal for everyday wear. I've been told that I could probably sell it for $100,000 because literally everything that came with the watch new is intact, including the receipt. In 1986 my grandfather paid just about HK$200,000 (about C$30,000 at the time), and wore it no less than 6000 times over 20 years (he wore it everyday, except while it was out for service).

When I had to take it to Patek to be serviced, it cost me almost $5,000 and took 8 months, but it came back working and looking like it was just bought.

But one thing is for sure, the watch will never leave my hands. Keeping with the Patek slogan "You don't buy a Patek Philippe, you merely look after it for the next generation"

Thanks for the advice. I needed that one. Well just like other "collectibles", there will be fakes especially for a high-end item like Rolex watches.

I noticed on Ebay that many sellers (powersellers, etc) sell watches that have parts that came from other watches...it just made me think the legitimacy of the whole watch itself afterwards.

I'm on the lookout for a Datejust only. Maybe I should ask someone here before buying one.

If you are interested in used one, don't get it from ebay. There're some reputable watch/jewelery store in Toronto that sell used Datejust. :cheesygri

Or if you are willing a little bit more than $3000, then you can actually go for a brand new Air King. I can refer you to a dealership that provide decent discount for that..

I would never deal with European Jewelers though. Once I went at their Eaton Centre brand and I wanted to inquire about a pair of Tag's that I wanted to buy. Maybe a lil bit of sales talk would've helped them to make a sale with me, but this old woman who works there was just a total *******. So I asked for one of the pieces because I wanted to see it up close...she whispered "Do you have enough money to buy this?"...and I said "Well I wouldn't be looking at one if I didn't have the money right?".

Patek recommends it every 5 years for complicated watches like perpetual calendars. It's constantly running, so the mechanical parts need to be in tip-top shape if I want to pass it on to my future generations. Small expense to justify for such a treasure.

Do go for the AP RO Safari if you get a chance to get one. It's an awesome watch, a perfect balance between casual/sporty and dressy. I owned one for a few months, then traded it in to get the Alinghi earlier this year.

If you wear it daily, then MAYBE. I've had my Rolex since new, in 2000 and it runs as good as it did when I first got it. I don't wear it daily though. Maybe once or twice a week. Even at 8 years old, I don't plan to service it until it's 10 or 12 years old.

I'm no watch expert, so I am asking for some of u watch lover's input.

I was just wondering if it is normal for a Rolex watch to be doing this. After not

wearing it for a couple of day or so, the time just stops. This however never

happens when it's being worn on the hand, for a week +. Is this normal or is

there sth wrong. By the way, it's a oyster perpetual date just.

It's normal for automatic mechanical watch likes Rolex, Omega and etc. It happens to my Sea Dweller as well as they are "Automatic" watch. "Automatic" watch relies on wearer's motion to wind up its mainspring. And I believe that Rolex's watches (depending on the movement model) have a power reserve rating at approx. 48 hours. Therefore, theoretically (assuming that the watch was fully wind-up when you wore it), the watch will keep functioning for another 48 hours or so and it will stop. Hope it helps.:cheesygri

tsis3, answered it above though. Comes with the territory when dealing with more high end watches (compared to quartz [battery operated] watches). At least it's an automatic though, you would really hate having a manual handwind watch.

I just got a Marathon TSAR. The short history behind these watches, apart from their robust and tough looks is what won me over.

Marathon is a Canadian based company that has their own factory in Switzerland to produce these. They're government issued watches to the Canadian & US military, the US Coast Guard & NASA diving teams. They can only be bought direct from Marathon if you are military, fire or police. Otherwise, some military equipment suppliers in the US sell them. Funny enough, the only way to get the in Canada is through Marathon by being ither military, fire or police.

In any case, the watch is solid, thick, super robust and uses tritium tubes for luminance. Very cool indeed.

THese can be had for around $500. Bracelet is an extra $200, but well worth it. THe rubber strap it comes with is natural rubber and super soft and comfortable. Packaging is very simple. Nothing fancy.

None of these pics are mine, but I'll post my own soon:

I know most of then are not watch crazy, if any at all. What has me baffled is that if Marathon is supplying these watches to Military/Fire/Police, there should be something available on their intranet site or some other document that shows how they can order one from Marathon... but there seems to be nothing. There's not a single page that says Marathon has made a watch that meets military spec or that they are an approved supplier.

It's true, I have done some work in their location in Richmond Hill. You need to buy Marathon from the USA. Even though I am very friendly with the secretaries there, I would still have to get one from the USA.

As far as ORIS goes, you can get them at European Jewellers and La Swiss. I was looking at them, but I just couldn't justify the price for what you were getting and none of them really works for me visually.

As far as my latest acquisition goes, I went with this:

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3183/3039088716_b9b9ba1624_b.jpg

I always wanted brown croc and pink gold, but everybody who makes similar watches are using solid gold instead of gold plated which puts the price of the watch up fairly high. The movement is the tried and true ETA cal 2824-2

They do the Canadian military as well. Nobody is willing to (or maybe able to) sell the product to civilians in Canada. A friend who is in the same position as myself and is familiar with the staff at Marathon got his from the USA as it was impossible to acquire one from Marathon directly. The only bonus is that you can return it to Marathon here for warranty needs. If your watch dies immediately after getting it here, the watch will not be easily replaced as they would rather repair it due to the unique serial numbers on the watches.

Call up Marathon directly and you can go pick one up from their head office in Richmond Hill. The catch is, in order for them to sell it to you, you have to provide police, fire or military ID. I got mine from a private collector.

Ah. If that's what it'll take, it's doable :) I just have to find the money first. I wonder how much they cost.

It was something like $450 for the TSAR, $600 for GSAR. On the rubber strap. The bracelet is around $150 extra (al prices in CDN $). This is the price direct from them. If you buy them from the US suppliers or even private collectors, they cost much more because they are harder to get hold of.

It's a great watch. I'm wearing my TSAR right now. It's by no means a bling watch, as much as it is a solid, sturdy watch. I love it.

Thanks for sharing the brand :)

Personally, I like the first one better - what are the different model numbers, and is there a cost difference? Are they both even available or is one an older version?

Where is the best place to buy this from Ottawa or toronto?

Congrats, best of luck.

But remember when you come back to Canada, you have to choose to declare it or not. I believe there is a $700 limit on goods brought back to Canada? If you do not declare it, and they point you to the search room, you'll have to prove that you bought it in Canada.

I think I will wear that watch on my wrists, that's for sure (that is if I decide to buy one!) I have done a few overseas trips and I think the Customs officers are more concerned with things like food/booze/cigarettes/illegal substances than jewellery but your point is well-taken.

Don't know where to buy, but Grand Seikos are nice watches.. looks like the same watch, perhaps different year models. The pearl design is different.

Generally, steel bracelets cost more than rubber. My Ti Omega bracelet alone is worth $800. Do some more research before you buy.

Also, my recommendation to anyone who is considering an expensive watch purchase. - try before you buy. Buy the watch you've been eyeing for years, not days.

Question:

What about calibration for watches that are automatic? My Seiko 5 (7S26A movement) is quite fast - I have to turn it back by almost ten minutes every month or so. Where would be the best place to get this calibrated? It's my everyday watch, nothing special.

Cool. Your choice of course. I've heard from ppl that works as those customs say, people think by pretending they are wearing something (new) then its old and bought back home (not on their trip); and think the custom officer questioning you will not send you to the search room.

He reminds me that if they do think you are lying or suspicious, they will put the "search" code on your card, and when you exit, the guard to point you to their search room. Then, they will ask where you got your watch, camera, computer from. If you say it was bought here in Canada, they have the right to ask you for proof (receipt, etc). If you don't have it, they can hold your item, until you come back with proof.

Or they can just assume you are lying and put a nice record on your passport. You are now black listed and probably will be searched on all your future trips.

Hence, just be aware of the options. (1) Claim that you went over the $700 allowance and maybe they will tax you, (2) not claim and get away with it or (3) not claim and not get away with it and leave a bad record on your passport.

That second one is not an Orange Monster. Note the compass markings, I think it's a different model etc. Buy Seikos online from Amazon for the best prices, Canadian prices are pretty high. Also note that some Monsters are collectors items so they might have a price premium on them.

I was quoted US$550 for the TSAR and US$675 for the GSAR. Although this a local guy he wants US$. These are on rubber straps, SS bracelets are extra US$175. He said he can show me his invoices Marathon with serial#s and that they are BNIB. His prices are a little lower than broadarrow. I guess you have to pay extra for these items being hard to get and being local no shipping and taxes at the border!!

Depends on what your job is. Did you need a tough, funtional watch? Or a classy, boardroom type watch?

$500 or less - not sure how much you can haggle. I'd look for sales. My friend just bought this Seiko "Land Monster" (like the Orange Monster) for 50% off at Fargo time. $250 i believe

Hey Handsome (clever name btw, but i'm a dude, so it doesn't work out sometimes haha)

For your type of work then, prob get something more elegant and stylish. For $500 or less, look at sales at malls and People's jewlers, etc. You can haggle a little at People's, etc. I doubt they sell many watches at all.

Brands that may interest you: Tissot (I'd highly recommend this one - swiss made at a great price), Movado, Citizen, Seiko.

If you are going for Tissot, Citizen or Seiko, go to Pacific Mall as well, (if u are in T.O.), pay cash and most likely no tax. Can haggle slightly too.

But again, <$500, don't expect 20% off (from haggling). If you buy something >$1500, then yes, you can get 20% + off.

There are lots of watches there in that range. Marex and European are separate stores in the same mall but they have the same owners and attitude. Usually a discount is offered immediately and then you can haggle a little more without offending anyone.

The particular watch in the picture, Costco has it really cheap, but I think that it is not most Omega fans favourite watch. Almost nobody looks at or talks about it. Costco is selling it at about 45% off, but I think they might discontinue the watch. Since models like that become rare and the movement in it is a respectable movement, I might just pick it up unless I find some evidence saying I should avoid the watch.

European is expensive, and they do not have that many watch lines for $2000 + I recommend Classic Creations in Toronto (Yonge and Finch area) They have lots of great brands such as Tag Heuer, Concord C1, Ebel, Bedat & Co, Corum, etc.

I suppose you already know that this Omega model is for regatta right ? With its start time countdown (blue, red circles).

Also, one thing good about buying it at Costco is: you have UNLIMITED time for refund !!

I recently got a 300M Seamaster there, and because they are not authorized dealers for Omega, the Omega warrant of 1 yr is not valid. Hence, there is a note saying the Costco warranty will apply.

If you are ever unsatisfied with the product, you may return it for the full price paid. No mention of 30, 60, 90 days. I asked at the cashier as well, he said "Yup, Costco refunds are unlimited, with anything you buy in our stores".

Now tell me, when was the last time you heard an authorized dealer tell you "If you ever don't like this watch, come back for a 100% full refund, yes, even AFTER you wore it "

I went in there and inquired about the Bond QoS that they had and asked them if they could beat the best deal i got elsewhere and they offered no movement and the guy flat out said he didn't believe me so i told him i'd get the watch and then drop by. I got the watch for a much better price than they could offer (no discount) and walked by and smirked.

I checked 2 weeks later and they're still holding onto their beloved QoS haha.

These are my two watches. I got the Rolex Datejust in April'08 and the Omega Speedmaster triple date moon phase two tone (aka Speedmaster Classic) was purchased in Dec 2000.

What a collection. U must be on other more serious time piece forums I'm guessing.

How about Omegas?

I spend most of my time on TimeZone.com and paneristi.com

Omegas are great watches. I'm not really into the James Bond branding, but the Planet Oceans are very nice. I love big watches and they make a 45.5mm PO now which is beautiful....

Also can't go wrong with a trust speedmaster, sort of small for my liking, but a classic for many WUS.

I got a smoking deal on one of these from a secondhand store in London:

http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l156/wbarker75/Ingenieur/IngenieurFront1_edited-1.jpg

Watch was in pretty good condition and I paid about $3,200 when the retail price in Canada is more than $8,000. Bad economy is good for watch prices if you're buying

I'm buying this to beat the hell out of it!

Inge is an underrated IWC IMO.
I tried on the Big Inge just before Xmas, truly a stunning watch, but I understand it doesn't have the magnetic protection like the on you have does. So it's not really a "Tool Watch", per say, but suer a looker.

I had an all black guess watch last year and lost it so i'm in the market for a new one. i really like the look of guess watches.
anyone have any experience with the Guess Collection Swiss made?
i'm looking into the one that i posted the pic below.
G46001G2

It is about 585$ retail, and about 400-450$ u.s on ebay.
is it a waste to spend that much on a guess watch? any better brands that look very similar to this in the same price range? looking to spend about 300-400 MAX. I found a similar model for about 250$ u.s., same band but inside bezel is silver, i prefer all black.
opinions?

For that much $, yes, it seems a bit high to spend on Guess. For that price range, look at Tissot, Swiss Army, maybe Invicta as well, that may have models that look similar, and a higher brand name imo.

But, as any true watch lover would tell you, buy what you like, and enjoy it. No one else can tell you what you like. ;)

Seriously, I'd never spend that much on a "designer" watch. If you buy a watch from people who actually make watches, you would get a better product.Guess has to pay someone to make the watch and then they get it and mark up the price. Since this watch is a quartz and not an automatic, "Swiss Made" means relatively nothing. You are also paying more for the chronograph fuction you are not likely to use (but hey, if it looks cool, so what). I'd consider a fake Guess, because as with most of these watches, if it breaks later on you are SOL anyway.

Look at www.fargotime.com to see if they will sell it cheaper. Their pricing indicates you might be able to acquire that watch for around $300.

Yup, and you may decide that designer watches that "look good" may not last you very long. (Your taste and watch itself). Just don't buy Omega, once the Omega bug bites, you can never go back !

See what the 10yr warranty covers. If it covers the movement as well, then you'll be fine. 10 yr warranty is a long (good) one. It may even come with free battery replacement?

SOL = crap out of luck (replace the word crap with "s----" of course)

+1. I had a Guess watch before and I'm about to send it in for a warranty claim. The face is scratched to death. The alarm, and stop watch are both broken. From the info I found in the manual, it seems the Guess is made by Timex.

I also had a few watches from Fossil. What junk. They looked great but the quality sucked. Between my bro and I, we've owned 3 Fossil watches and all have broken down on us for one reason or another. Thank goodness we never paid full price at a Fossil store. What's especially ******** is I had my Fossil watch battery replaced once at a Fossil store and the sales person told me "Your water is no longer warrantied against water resistance since the battery had been changed". WTH!??! I changed it at THEIR store and they can't guarantee water resistance... How can you rely on them?

Actually, that's common. Most retail places don't have the tools to check for and guarantee water resistance. You'll most likely have to send it to their service centre for that.

Ditto on what DMXLITE said about water resistance. The serviceman would have to do a water pressure test to keep the warranty.

But yes, I agree with you on the quality. You know what the most horrible thing is about a watch, is if it is not accurate enough. A watch if its not accurate can vary by + or - x seconds. (could be 5 sec - 20 secs or more). Now that may not sound like a lot, but over weeks, months, even years, that could be a lot.

Imagine you had a job interview, would you want to be 10 minutes late I know I would not want that.

Quartz (battery operated) watches are better at keeping accurate time. That is one reason I save up $ to get a good quality watch. (Chronometer if you can afford one, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chronometer)

In anycase, every few months or more, you should always sync your time again with the accurate time from the internet websites. http://www.worldtimeserver.com/ for example.

This is exactly what I was taking about. A 30yr warranty means nothing if there is no reliable place to have your watch serviced. If you buy a good watch (my Omega Seamaster is a little pricey for most but there are other options), they will last a lifetime and can be repaired/serviced properly at many different locations. I do mix my watches up and I don't wear the same one every day. I am waiting for the new Omegas to hit the market, so to keep myself preoccupied last week, I bought these three:

The last Seiko is really cheap. The band will have to go because it keeps mowing the hair on my wrist. Definitely nothing like an Omega, but it's a great beater watch with a history. My buddies is 12-15 years old and beat to crap, but he wears it everyday.

Quick question. I recently bought a watch but due to the oversized face, there is some space between my wrist and strap, but it does not slide around. Is this normal? And should you wear a watch at the wrist bone or below?

Its a quartz, but does have an alarm. Police is a new brand. Personally, I"d prefer to stick with something more established, for 200-250, you can go with Swiss Army/Victorinox/Wenger. BUt if you like this "cool" look, go give it a try.

How much were those and where did you buy them from?

The top one was $280 from Kavar Jewellers (they were asking $799).

The middle one, I told a friend to give it to me for giving him $250 worth of computer parts and the labour to reinstall his OS and transfer his files. I think full retail is $450, www.fargotime.com sells it for less.

The last one was purchased from Kavar for $80. Most people that sell standard Seiko 5's will tell you that they are $200, but they are on sale for $80. This happens VERY frequently. I like it because of the heritage of the Seiko 5.

The first diver actually draws some attention. Excellent value and tool watch. My Seamaster kills it though (surprise). Anybody that tells you LumiBrite is better than SuperLuminova is an dreaming.

The older one is $5K full pop, but you should be able to get it for $4200. The newer ones have the co-axial movement, which is what would driving the price on them even higher. There is a Piguet 1285 movement in the Aqua Terra Chronograph (the one you are asking about), and I am not sure there intent is to replace it yet, but since there is a co-axial movement in the Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean Co-Axial Chrono (which could be used in this watch) , I know they probably will. Talk to an AD about the movements, but don't let on you want the older stuff cheaper unless you are ready and willing to act immediately. They might just blow you off.

Google for the specs, but generally speaking, Co-axial has less friction (i think) so the maintenance period is much longer, and it is more accurate.

It doesn't make much sense, because it looks like the LED or whatever display is all on the bracelet, which is stainless steel. I can't imagine the gaps can be made into some type of LED.

I can also clearly see the horizontal red lines are drawn on the stainless steel pieces itself, not a gap.

Does anyone know anything about the Concord Bennington 18k gold watch? I am planning to buy either this one or the Baume Mercier Hampton Square for my girl friend's dad? Does 2k sound like reasonable price? I don't know much about watches, I am hoping somone can help me with it.

A watch is a very personal thing (to me anyway) and can be difficult to pick. You need to determine a few things to help you choose. First of all, what type of watch do you see him wearing, if he wears one at all? Do you see him wearing a sporty watch, a tool watch (one with purpose), a semi dressy watch (possibly sporty/dressy or tool/dressy), or full out dress only.

If he does not wear a watch you will have to think harder. You will need to determine his wrist size. He may not like a huge watch ,I am 6' 1" , somewhat large boned and like a 40-42m face. I have a friend who is the same size (neither of us are overweight), but when he puts on my watch, it looks like a wall clock on his wrist.

If he might like a sporty watch, does he have a hobby or passion you could get a watch that suits? Automotive, Nautical, Space, Outdoors (camping etc), aeronautical, Trains.

Would he like a straight up dress watch, or one with a little flair?

Perhaps he might like a combination of the two.

This is my (one of my) dressy/sporty/tool watch:
http://www.avente-watches.com/images/products/2255.80.00.jpg

41 mm face.Somewhat heavy. Water resistant to 1000m. Sporty "electric blue" dial. Automatic (winds itself). One of the best Lume watches (watch glows when exposed to light, not permanently though). Can be worn with a suit, or a T-shirt. It is a diving watch (I do not dive).

This is my dressy watch:
http://www.watchconcepts.com/HAMILTON/JAZZMASTER/h32545555m.jpg

40 mm face.Brown croc strap. Rose gold (plated). Guilloche (textured) dial. Exhibition caseback (you can see the innards of the watch through the back). Water reistant to 50m. Automatic. Suit or dress shirt watch for sure. The watch has a vintage look to it. The watch has a heritage relating to railroads in the USA.

This is (one of my) my sporty only watch:
http://www.thewatchplaceonline.com/images/SKX007-1.jpg

Supposed to be 42mm, wears like 39mm face. Rubber strap.Water resistant to 660m. Has a lot of lume that doesn't glow as well as my Omega Seamaster (this is only a $300 watch). Semi dress and down only, no suits, or really nice shirts.it is a diving watch. It is an automatic. Heritage, well its a Seiko.

This is my (one of my) sporty/elegant/luxury watch except mine is full gold:
http://www.bernardwatch.com/image/TAG681s.jpg

38 mm diameter face. Water resistant to 330mm. Lume stinks (maybe due to age or the lume was just no good).Semi dress and up.Racing heritage (timing and clocks for race cars). Can be used for diving. Not an automatic, so it needs a battery.

Find out what you can and get back to us...

AudiDude with the sales pitch....

between those, personally, I'd like the Omega (is that a seamaster?) or the Tag link (btw, that's an old model if I'm not mistaken)...although the Hamilton is somewhat fitting for an old man.

2k would get you the Hamilton or the Tag posted. That Omega looks like it's more than 2k.

Thanks a lot for your suggestion.

I finally decided which one to pick. Since her dad currently owns a Rado, I decided to pick the Concord 18k gold one for him. I think this one is more like his style. The other reason is the concord ones are on sale right now for 50% off at birks. My girl friend got my Baumer on sale for half price a couple of years ago. It's a great buy. Thanks again for ur help!

If anyone wants to buy Omega from Costco,

http://www.costco.ca/Common/Category.aspx?whse=BCCA&Ne=5000001&eCat=BCCA|108|110|179&N=4009073+4294966733&Nr=P_CatalogName:BCCA&Ns=P_Price|1||P_SignDesc1&lang=en-CA&hierPath=108*110*179*&topnav=

They are not an authorized dealer for Omega, so you will not get the Omega warranty.

BUT because of that, you get the Costco warranty, which is actually better (in a way).

If you are not satisfied with your purchase, simply return it for a full refund. NO time limit !!

How good are those particular models?
How good is Costco's pricing vs bargaining with an AD?
Do they actually scratch out the numbers on the watch itself?

How good ? Hard to answer, Omega is amongst the highest brands in quality and name. The Seamaster Pro is one of the most highly regarded series, well known to any watch fan.

Price: you'd have to do some comparison shopping. Just like buying anything. Some ppl that have good relationships with AD may get better prices, others will not, so Costco's price is decent.

Scratch out numbers: No definitely not. They don't touch the watch in any way.

Quite a few of watches mentioned are readily available in highly accurate replica form, so if you can't justify either spending 7k+ on a watch or you feel that the markup for Swiss manufacturers is too high (even with the history and craftsmanship factored in) then getting a replica watch is a good alternative. I don't personally feel this way, but some models are VERY accurately reproduced... you can forget flying tourbillons, however.

Also, is it interesting that Rolex is so rarely mentioned in this thread? They command such a large market share (especially in the COSC certified chronometer department) but apparently not a good reputation with this population.

I don't go for a Rolex because I find that they look alike and add in that it is the most copied watch and it seems like everybody has one. What really doesn't do it for me is the design and the fact that the more expensive ones just have more diamonds. I wanted to see the square Cellini in Las Vegas and they said every one they got, sold immediately, which says people are ready for something new. The movements are very good and the metals in the watch are superior for a difference you can feel. Usually fakes are thicker, especially if they are a chronograph.

I was discussing nice watches with the owner of a local small jewelery store and he was saying that he had a customer come in with a $900 Tissot. The customer had bought it about a year before for $700 so he figured he got a good deal. The jeweler says that the watch had some red coloring around the outside of it that had all worn off. Then the watch died on him. He took it this local jeweler who opened up the case and discovered that the guts of the watch were just some standard watch components that he could replace for $100 or less. I can't remember exactly what he called it.

So that's why he said he only likes companies that are true watch manufacturers.

I figure the guy got ripped off in the first place and probably bought a knock-off because of the way the color wore off.

What do you guys think?

AudiDude
Jan 27th, 2009, 12:13 AM
Most Swiss watches that are reasonably priced use the tried and true ETA 2824-2 or the 2892-A2. These are a favourite because they are reliable and can be tweaked to pass COSC standards. A Omega 1120 is a modified 2892-A2.

So when shopping if you find that two watches you like, try to find out what movements are in them. If they share the same movements and are unmodified from their base configuration, buy the one with the best fit/finish and materials.

The movements may be Swiss, but not fully manufactured "inhouse"
and may or may not be heavily modified.

Was the jeweler implying that "Tissot" is not a true watch manufacturer? That's pretty surprising. Tissot since 1800's has been a well respected watch company.

My guess is that $700 Tissot was a replica to begin with. Not an original Tissot.

many watch companies use cheap standard movements. they just dress up the internals a bit and then sell it at an expensive price. nothing wrong with the movement, it's just inexepsnive and mass produced. you just have to know what you're buying when you shop for a watch.

$200 autos? Hmm.... I don't know if that's possible.

For a cottage wear and waterproofness, I say go with a Casio Mudman. They are really rugged and well respected in the Army fields.

Or how about Pathfinder, no harm in getting a compass, barometer, and altitude indicator as well in the cottage. The Illuminator will surely come in handy at night under the stars as well.

I'm looking to pick up a new watch. It will be for every day use, I'm in a suit 9-5, M-F but would also like this for weekends from casual to formal events.
My budget is around $1k-$1500 and I'd likely be buying it used.

Here are the ones I'm looking at

Tag Link Calibre S

Tag Link Automatic

Omega Speedmaster

I guess they are all great watches and its my choice, any other ones that I should look at?
I've visited TZ, any other forums for classifieds?

Tag Link Calibre S

I had one in my hands and like most of the new Tags, it feels cheap. The two little hands may look cool in the picture, but they only move from their rest position when you stop the watch in chrono-mode or they just show the date. The hand ticks heavily because it is a quartz (like most other rip-off Tags). I think it costs way too much for getting way to little. I am not alone with me findings on the new Tag watches...

Tag Link Automatic

This watch feels more heavy because it is a chrono. The silver bezel means there is no paint to chip/wear off. It is cheaper than the Calibre S. At least it is an automatic, so it has a smooth sweep to the hands.

Omega Speedmaster

The diameter of this watch is a little small for me (but still OK). The bezel is black and may wear from daily use. The bracelet has a great feel and weight to it. It is a certified chronometer.Smooth sweeping hands. Will maintain its value better than a Tag Heuer. If you kept it for a long time, it could be refinished to look like new several (20-30-40) years later. Rolex doesn't even offer that service let alone Tag (I don't think Rolex is superior, its just a well (overly respected) known brand)

Since the Omega is pricier, I don't know if you could get one for the price you are looking at. I wouldn't bother with the Tag Link Calibre S, it costs too much for what you get and feels cheap. It looks like the Link Automatic is your best choice.

However, I would consider this as well :

http://image.rakuten.co.jp/newestshop/cabinet/watch-hamilton1/img55315186.jpg

If you are willing to lose the chrono feature, or are willing to settle for quartz instead of automatic, you could save money, or purchase multiple watches.

Speedy FTW!

I'm a little biased but I really like the Omega Speedmaster Pro. If anyone's looking for their first 'fine' watch purchase then take a look at the Speedy "Moonwatch" Pro. It's a great value for the money, looks fine dressy or sporty, very classic design, proven reliable movement and has a nice background history to it. The only fault that some may see with it is that it is a manual movement.

I have a problem with Tags and Rolex's, but it's just my bias so I don't want to sway anyone unnecessary. Tags and Rolex's serve their purpose but it's not a Speedy Moonwatch. Not to say one brand is better that the other, just letting everyone know to keep the Speedy as an option.

That being said, if and when I have the money, I wouldn't mind getting an IWC Portuguese 7 Day Auto :drools:

After that, maybe a Lange1 :-)

Couldn't have agreed more. Also the fact that the Moon Watch really acted as an instrument, more than just a time piece makes it that much more impressive. It basically saved the lives of the astronauts in Apollo 13 on that 30 sec (?) burn timed by the SMP, when on board systems were shut off to conserve valuable power/wattage. If the accuracy wasn't there, they could have re-entered the atmosphere in a different angle, which they tell us could be fatal.

And if you didn't know, the original model (hesalite crystal) has a holographic OMEGA sign floating in the crystal (viewable if you look at the SMP on its side). Very cool indeed.

My BlackSeamaster 300M Chronometer gets so much more wrist time since I bought it, I'm feeling bad for my other watches. It is true what they say, once the Omega bug bites, there's no turning back.

Seiko is the only option I can think of. You will have to adjust your price upwards though. I like my SKX-007, it could be worn with a dress shirt, especially if I changed the band to metal. My orange land monster is a little distracting metal band or not.

You should stay away from designer branded watches, cause that's all they are. Those watches are just rebranded Fossil watches. You are paying for the name, and not for anything else, they are not good quality, and more than likely made in China. Buy from a watch company that has some pedigree.

My $59 Kenneth Cole watch has dust building up inside. I bought it in Vegas, the watch was $229 Canadian. I've worn it 20-30 times. I guess if I wear it in the rain or while sweating it's a goner. Either way designer watches suck and are not cool to wear two years later (if they still work), so don't bother.

Between Bulova and Movado in the lower price range, you're looking at Bulova for sure. Movado might have one watch for you at that price, and i'tll be boring. I'd also consider a Seiko or Seiko 5, Bulova is definitely not in a class above them.

Yes, the Speedy Pro will always be in my top 5 favorite watches, just because of its significance. It's not the most expensive, nor the flashiest, nor it is a status symbol, but its pedigree and the fact it is played a part in man's greatest exploits will always keep it at the top of every watch enthusiast's favorites list

General consensus online is that technomarine's are overpriced for what you get. watchuseek (http://forums.watchuseek.com/showthread.php?t=230616&highlight=technomarine)

as for the Seiko, it's a really nice watch, but if you aren't dead set on that model, there's a lot of different watches you can get for the same price range as the F1 Racing.

The only problem is the cost and the fact that it isn't a skeleton watch. I would prefer if it also had the date andd has a digital display somewhere.

I know that this is a lot to ask, but if ANYONE can give me ANYTHING to work with here, I would really appreciate it.

Although Chase-Durer's watches are very cool looking, on many serious watch forums, their reputation for poor quality is quite well known. So, you may want to think twice before getting a C-D.

By skeleton, you wanted both the FRONT and the BACK to be display (see-thru) ? That is quite unique when you combine it with an automatic one. Plus a chronograph.

Oris has a skeleton watch, but it does not have the chronograph. But Oris isn't what you would consider inexpensive.

I'm lookin for a decent, inexpensive chronograph skeleton automatic pocket watch/wristwatch, and I would prefer it to be under $200.00. I live in Mississauga, and I have a cheap Casio that I got from Hong Kong. I'm looking at this one right here, the Chase-Durer USAF B-52 Weapons School Watch.
The link is below:
http://www.stauer.com/item/Chase-Durer-USAF-B-52-Weapons-School-Watch/14869.

The only problem is the cost and the fact that it isn't a skeleton watch. I would prefer if it also had the date andd has a digital display somewhere.

I know that this is a lot to ask, but if ANYONE can give me ANYTHING to work with here, I would really appreciate it.

You will have a hard time locating a skeleton chrono. Not many out there, specially @ $200.
Also skeleton watches are Automatics so you can not have a digital display with it.

Nice suggestions for the watches with small wrists. Any other suggestions that are military inspired? I really did the Seiko SNK809 but i want to see what other choices are available.

I have a small wrist ! Believe me. Military inspired, I'd highly recommend Luminox or Tracer. Luminox are worn by US Navy Seals, I have 2 of these. The original navy seals and F16. They have tritium gas powered tubes that glow for at least 25 yrs, continously glows without any charging from sunlight. Very cool.

http://www.luminox.com/

The original series is rubber and is very very comfortable. Bass Pro used to sell these, but they don't anymore. Look around, maybe online. If you can go to Hong Kong (like I did), they are cheaper there ! hehe

Todays ChronoShark deal should be ideal for small wrist and military inspired and the price is perfect for a daily kicker. You need a US address though:(

I was just in Markville mall yesterday, and there was a store called "Jewellery Forever" (I think) near the food court/top of escilator and they had a sign for Police watches... on sale too. I didn't take look to see what they had though.

If you get any watch that is an automatic and a chronograph, you are asking for a thick watch. My Seamaster 300m Diver Chronometer fits like a glove while the chronograph version feels like a small weight on my arm and the band must be tighter so that it doesn't rotate so easy.

Anyone looking for a great deal on a decent watch, check out today's invictashark deal. It's an Invicta 8926, that looks similar to a Rolex Sub, and is selling for under $60! The catch is, you have to have a US address to have it shipped to. I've had one of these 8926 Invictas since 2001 as a beater watch and it's been great! Looks nice, feels nice, and it's an automatic movement, not quartz!

Well since I don't see a Blancpain in my near future, I guess I will keep wearing my St. Moritz Aquamatic. I love the back of it, it is glass and allows you to see the automatic movement. A bit heavy though.

I do not buy any jewelry for myself at all. But I do buy watches. At least one a year. I just bought another one last week while outlet shopping in Maine.

I have quite a few now. Too many even. Some cheap ones, many in the couple of hundred dollar range, and a few expensive ones.

The funny part is, I rarely ever wear them.

I just buy them when I find one that catches my attention.

Don't worry, online are usually grey markets. Your warranties may not apply to Citizen, and sometimes you get hit with duties, brokerage UPS fees, and if your watch gets lost in the mail, so much hassles.

As I'm a huge fan of James Bond, especially the Brosnan Bond, I had to take it one step further than just getting the Omega 2531.80, so I found a deal I could not pass up on a limited edition 2537.80. The difference between this and the regular Omega 2531.80 is the obvious 007 logo etched right above the 6 o'clock marker, then '007' embossed all over the dial instead of the waves, white gold around the hour/minute markers, and the clasp also has the '007' logo.

You put your finger on that glass part on the bottom right, and measures your pulse.

I had a similar one as well, but it didn't work so well while I was on the treadmill. Can't really put one finger and hold it still while running fast.

I bought the Suunto watch with the heart rate belt transmitter. It actually transmits my heart rate right to the treadmill, so the treadmill program will adjust the intensity level to keep my target heart rate too.

My favourite of the 3 is a tough choice, but I think I would choose the IWC. The brownish dial and strap makes the watch classy, while sporty with the large Arabic numerals. The Breguet is my second favourite as it's the perfect balance between sport and classic.

And I miss this pair I had for a short while (2 months)- Beautiful watches but those bezels are too easy to damage:

The Safari (silver on brown strap) was by far my favourite of the two. It wasn't too comfortable as you can probably tell by how big it sat on my wrist.

Yeah, I don't like the way Rolex has gone in the past few years. The DSSD is a poorly proportioned watch, the case is really heavy and thick and it just doesn't feel right on the wrist. I also like the old-school flimsy clasps for some strange reason, which is why I refuse to buy a more recent Daytona. I've been longing to get a Zenith Daytona (the white dial with black subdials) the prices have come down quite a bit but I think I need to sell 2 of my current watches before getting that.

Congrats! A beauty. Where'd u get it? La Swiss ?

Got it from a private seller in the US. These have been discontinued since 2005/2006 and have been hard to find since.

I just bought a UTC module for it, but I need to get the UTC re-dialed to a black dial in order for it to match. THe UTC module for those that don't know is basically an extra small watch that goes on the top part of the bracelet. Once it's done it'll look like this:

Nope, I simply like it for the look, and the fact that it's a rare and unique piece.

I tried a few different places...I think Peoples wouldn't even knock a penny off MSRP (crazy). Most other places offered about $440 tax included, but there's a place in pacific mall that did it for $400 tax included. I'm pretty sure that place is legit because the store has been around a long time and I got all the proper warranty cards and stuff.

As long as it comes with the proper warranty card and a serial number on the back I think you should be fine (for a PRC 200 at least). I personally did not have the balls to buy it off ebay, but I'm sure its fine especially given the amount of feedback. Just keep in mind there are actually fakes out there even though Tissots aren't that expensive:

http://forums.watchuseek.com/showthread.php?t=234250

You also have to wonder how they can sell it that cheap. Do they have extremely low mark-ups due to high volume and little-to-no overhead? Or are they grey market/stolen which means the serial numbers could possibly be blacklisted (bad).

Tag is definitely a good entry point for "real" time pieces. Price is good and the brand is well known. A good "guys" piece.

Also give Ball Watch a gander. http://www.ballwatch.com/

Pricing is about the same range and Ball is also recognized world-wide. Esp with its self powered Tritum tubes (glows with gas for 25yrs without external light source). I have the Engineer Hydrocarbon Classic III. Its awesome.

My wrist is 5.5 cm wide. When they talk about a 43mm watch, does that refer to the diameter of the dial, or the distance between the ends of the band receivers?

hdom
Aug 25th, 2009, 02:19 PM
43mm would usually be refering to the diameter of the bezel / case, the basic overall dimension without lugs, buttons & crown in the equation.

For example on my new baby a Lum-Tec Bull45 A5(see pics below), the 45mm is the diameter of the circular bezel, which is also the width of the case on this.

I have small wrist like you as well but I don't mind this big piece on mine, so I wouldn't worry too much about wrist size (see last pic - it looks awesome on Domo).

I'm probably gonna get laughed at for this but I decided I'd take a chance and risk the $20 to order one of these little puppies:

As far as looks go it looks pretty awesome. I get lots of compliments on it and everyone is amazed when I tell them how much it was. So far two people I know ordered the same one (which is actually kind of annoying). It draws attention as well because you can see one part spinning away all the time and other people notice it, especially outdoors when it's sunny.

Only problem is it doesn't keep time very accurately.

Know your retail prices. It all depends on the brand, too. In the US/Canada from authorized dealers I can easily get 25% off Omega or Breitling, and on some occasions as much as 40%. Rolex is tough to find discounted although some dealers here and there MAY discount 15% at best.

Not really sure about discounts on other brands.

Definitely full of history the Speedmaster. But, they did false claim it was the only watch worn on the moon:

http://www.chronomaddox.com/moonmovement.html

To this day, Omega claims both in print advertizement and as of lately on the backs of display back Speedmasters that the "moonwatch" is “The first and only watch worn on the moon”.

This is not factually correct. Omega probably considers the Waltham being on the moon to be a bit of a "stowaway" situation and feels free to continue to use their "first and only" catch phrase. To be frank, I have some sympathy towards Omega on that. However, the fact remains... Regardless of how it got there, a Waltham was worn on the moon. And thus the slogan isn't factually correct even if the Waltham got there illegitimately.

See, this is where you are wrong, as you do not know the history behind the Speedmaster. NASA wanted a watch that was manual wind, because they were unsure of how self-winding watches would respond to zero gravity. not only that, they needed a Chronograph. The DSSD is neither manual wind, nor a chronograph, so it would never be used. You just think the watch is cool that's why you said that

A/R on the outside does that. That is why some people do not like the Omega Planet Ocean, or buff off the A/R (which you can do because the Sapphire crystal is so tough).

I heard Damiani is the king of discounters for Rolex, but I have not verified it...

Regardless it did passed all NASA stress tests, Rolex, Brietling, Tag, etc all failed.

True. There is no guarantee that the Watham performed any major beneficial fuction to the mission. The Speedmaster in the LEM was being substituted for a broken instrument. As fas as the possibility of a Rolex being used for anything critical, does anybody believe that a crew member specifically used an non NASA-certified watch to help during re-entry or the like. I know I wouldn't.

If the same tests were done today, I would expect results would be different. Ie. the Rolex Deep Sea-dweller is amazing watch.

I also want to point out there that has other watches that has been to space besides Omega since.

The Deep Sea Dweller doesn't have a Hesalite crystal = major fail. Sapphire shatters and produces shards. Hesalite can withstand blows that would shatter sapphire. Hesalite will not produce shards that can cut an puncture. A Speedmaster with a Hesalite crystal is not severely waterproof and in the vacuum of space doesn't have any extreme pressures placed upon it as pressure can fluctuate from positive to negative without the watch seeing harm. Also the Lemania movement in the Speedmaster has been proven to be very durable and reliable, which is why it was chosen.

See, this is where you are wrong, as you do not know the history behind the Speedmaster. NASA wanted a watch that was manual wind, because they were unsure of how self-winding watches would respond to zero gravity. not only that, they needed a Chronograph. Seriously, I found the Ball watches a little more expensive than some of the mid priced Tags. They are cheaper than the expensive Tags, but anybody that is looking at those has never owned a real timepiece as far as I am concerned. The Tag Aquaracer stuff is their sweetspot.

Oh... a prize for ya!! Didn't realize I never replied....

Actually, as luck would have it, my Classic III Ball watch stopped running a few weeks ago. It wasn't holding the power reserve. Some clutch or some mechanism must be loose of broken.

Sadly, I bought it in HK, and the USA Ball (I read) will not service Asian Balls. So, I'll have to get a friend to bring it back on his trip and get it done. At least it will be free. (Shipping to US also costs a lot)

It also has to do with the lighting and angle I snapped the pictures at. The IWC does have a very visible blue tint to the crystal which actually makes it harder to read at times.

I heard Damiani is the king of discounters for Rolex, but I have not verified it...

La Difference (used to be on Bloor, and now in RH) had the best prices from what I remember. I inquired about a Sub and SD 2 years ago and they offered a 22% discount if paid by cash and 20% if paid by credit card. There's also an AD in Oakville (Knar Jewelers) that offers 20%+ discounts on Rolex- I had a fellow collector refer me there but I'm not in the market for a Rolex now.

Yeah, the DSSD is a bad example, but I stick to if there is another mission to go to the MOON, there may be better option available to NASA.

The Seiko Spring Drive Spacewalk comes to mind.

That's strange. Because having the AR is what a quality, high end watches will have. This makes it no reflective, esp. to overhead lights, sunlight and I found it does make the watch much, much easier to read.

Some higher end time pieces have double AR coating on both sides of the crystal. That makes the crystal almost invisible ! Its amazing to look at.

Yes, I realize that some higher end watches have AR and I actually think it makes the crystal hard to read in some lighting conditions (when it is partially dimmed for example). The crystal also has a tendency to show fingerprints much easier if it has an AR coating. Double AR coating can also get scratched or accidentally polished off. I would actually prefer my IWC without AR.

Patek Philippe and AP are examples of brands that don't have AR coating and I don't find the crystal distorting the dial at all on their models.

What if you have really small writs? What kind of watch is good for that? I'm sick of taking the links out!

Well, taking links out is the only way to size it properly for you. Get some tools and do it yourself. It ain't that hard. I do all mine.

Small wrists? Stick with watches that are 38, 39, 40mm in diameter. Lots of those around, expensive ones and non-expensive ones.

any mid-size watch will do just fine (37mm). I find that 40mm is the limit. You can try straps instead of bracelet (e.g NATO straps), they a very easy to size, like some belts.

Automatic PRC200, I didn't even know they existed until now. I want that so bad, I really hate the movement on my PRC200 after I have used automatic watches for a while...

Just picked up a Seiko Flight Master SNAB69. Extremely impressed with the watch for the price. Its big and heavy, which is perfect for me.

I haven't wore my PRC200 in months!

Two questions for you watch connoisseurs.

1. Is this real. SNL015 (http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=350267301958&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT). I can't seem to find it on the Seiko sight and the seller has called this "Kenetic" not Kinetic?

2. What is the build quality of the Michael Hill (http://www.michaelhill.ca/www/welcome.cfm) watches? They look very nice.

This thread is a bit slow. I would check the watchuseek (http://forums.watchuseek.com/index.php) forums.

Thanks, I tried that first, but couldn't find the appropriate forum where people would be discussing these chronoshark deals. Any suggestions?

The Seiko, Citizen & Orient Forum (http://forums.watchuseek.com/forumdisplay.php?f=21) :cheesygri

Not saying that they will have your answer, but that is the best place to look IMHO. Cheers,
