I have an older Accent.

$16000+ is A LOT for a little car like that. You'd be much better off by paying a little more for something like a Mazda 3.

Or, get a slightly used Accent for a lot less. For example, on www.trader.ca there's a 2004 Accent GS with 8000 km for $11,995. Or a 2003 Accent GS with only 14k km for $8,995.

I've got a 2004 Accent it's a decent car but if you can afford it pay the extra 1-2k and get a Civic or Mazda 3. Avoid the Echo that thing is apparently being discontinued thankfully. The Corolla is more comparable.

Not sure about the price and haven't kept up to date on any issues, but when I reviewed the Mazda3 last year it was the best car in the economy class. Overall picked the Civic due to operating costs, value, reliability, and a couple of design annoyances with the Mazda. Mazda3 is the best handling by far, and good power.

the echo is not being discointinued...that thing has very strong sales. the quality of materials inside the echo is a few grades above the accent and civic.

but the civic is too old and long in the tooth...get a Mazda 3 or corolla if you can pay a bit more

but mazda 3's are quite pricey

If you want to keep it for only 2 - 3 years avoid this because it does not hold the resale value well.

If you want to keep it for longer than 2 -3 years avoid this because the warranty is expired and the repair cost is high.

In conclusion avoid it by all means.

What car are you referring to?? The Accent has one of the longest warranties around. The resale part is true, though improving slightly.

although the story is hosted on a Canadian site, I think it's referring to America (says its from Associated Press - Detriot).

The Echo hatchback has strong sales in Canada but for some reason, it's not available in America. They do have another model similar to the Echo under their youth brand "Scion" but is available to only a few states.

I think

actually means Toyota will dump their existing Echo sedans and replace them with the Echo Hatchback 3 door and 5 door. The Echo Hatchback is styled exactly the same as the Toyota's European Yaris.
