Default Another Xbox question

I won an Xbox, bought some games for it and some dvd's (we dont have a DVD player) and was just about to wrap it for the kids for Xmas but somebody told me that it won't play the DVD's unless I buy something else for it. Is this correct, and if so what do I have to buy?

You need to buy the Xbox DVD Kit (remote + IR sensor) or get your XBOX modified with a mod chip. The DVD Kit is like $49 (at FS), which imo isn't worth it. You can just get a stand alone DVD Player for that price and it'll be better.

Wow, $49--you're right, you can buy a whole DVD player for that! And there's no place to get them much cheaper I assume. How do you get a mod chip? As I said I won this thing and know Nothing about them whatsoever. Guess I'll have to let the kids watch the DVD's on the computer for now......

Default Xbox

Hi Brenda...
WOW what a nice prize to win! Wish there were contests like that around me!
the mod SHOULD allow you to watch DVDs without the playback kit.

Mods typically cost around 60-100 for the chip and install. As well you may consider buying a large HD (say 160~200 gig) so you can copy games onto the HD. I'm looking into some mods now for friends. If you'd like i can send you the info on where to get it done as well.

If you want to sell off the xbox, let me know and i could probably find a buyer for you.

I actually won it through Safeway just by scanning my card!

You can send me the info on the mod kit but I'm not sure it would do me too much good, I'm in a very small place in southern BC. The closest major centre is Calgary and it's about 4 hours away.

Actually, if it wasn't so close to Christmas I'd probably take you up on this. My kids are only 7 and 9 (both girls) and I think I would have really preferred a Gamecube or a PS2 over the Xbox. I'm having a hard time finding games that aren't really violent (or blood and guts graphic)

yea the xbox is much more focused on the late teen/adult crowd. I know ppl 30/40 yrs old playing the xbox... its funny. If you look at the games lineup for Xbox it explains the demographic focus clearly.

mmmm you COULD try bringing the xbox into walmart/zellers/bay and exchanging it in for a store credit. you can get more than enough money to get a game cube, extra controller + games. My hunch would be the girls will enjoy the GC much more than Xbox.

they posted this idea in another thread... its not ILLEGAL per se, but not really condoned.

If you still want to get the DVD Remote, this guy www.jandaman.com sells them for 15$ US. They are a third party remote but they should work just fine. I haven't dealt with him personally but I have read nothing but praise about his products and service. Also, I do agree with the other posters that the Xbox is definately aimed at a late teen to adult demographic. Especially when you consider all the great stuff you can do with it if you get a modchip and bigger hard drive. If you decide to get a modchip in the future your location shouldn't be too much of an issue as most modders are willing to ship to you. You would have to pay shipping to ship the Xbox there and back though. PM DJXP if you are interested in doing this as he did mine and did a very professional job and he is easy to ask questions if you don't know exactly what you are doing. Here is a list from walmart http://www.walmart.com/catalog/produ...85876%3A112729 of "kid" type games for the Xbox. Hopefully this will help you decide what games your kids might like. Best of luck.

I think if you have one of those learning remote than you wouldn't need to buy anything else. Just punch in the codes

the xbox need an IR receiver along with the remote. The IR also has to be USB type so it can be plugged into the xbox unit.

creative suggestion tho!

Really ? My Kameleon 8 in 1 has an XBOX code ? I haven't tried it yet maybe in about a month or so. I hope it works.

link

Also linkey

"You're not limited to taking control of conventional devices either - thanks to the learning function of the Kameleon, you can use the remote to control any device that has its own remote, such as the X-Box. "

The Xbox has NO IR receiver. THe IR receiver plugs into a controller port (pick any one). So if you Kameleon happens to have an IR receiver you can plug into the Xbox, then you'll be able to control it. Otherwise, you'll need to get the IR receiver somewhere.
The Xbox remote is made by RCA and uses their codes. The only reason to buy it is because of the IR plug-in.

Tried this!--How embarassing!--First I BEEEEEP like crazy on the way in through the doors, I tell the cashier that I'm just going to do a return. Returns are at the back of Zellers so I go all the way to the back of the store. I told the clerk that the girls Grandma had sent it for Xmas and I wanted a game cube instead. She looks at me like I'm a criminal and says that All electronics need to be matched with their inventory stock, so I'd need the receipt so they could match up the SKU to the store that sold it to her. I left and BEEEPED like crazy on the way out too. In retrospect I guess I should have told her that I won it and asked if I could exchange it, maybe that would have worked, who knows!!

hey,

if your thinking of getting a gamecube......perhaps you can find someone who is lookign to buy a brand new xbox, have them purchase a brand new gamecube, and you guys can swap....and perhaps he can give u $30 more or so.....to make up for price difference.....

might be an idea if ud rather have a gamecube, which is probably better for your daughters.

if u wanted to refund it somewhere without receipt, you are better off at futureshop, toyrus, bestbuy and/or walmart.

I hate getting electronics/games for stuff i dont use for gifts. and i never get gift receipts for them. but those should work, i havent done toyrus for a while. (i really didnt want that 60$ box of connex or whatever it was called)
