Default Actuarial Jobs in Vancouver

Hi. I have read most of the posts on the Actuarial profession in this forum but they tend to be more relevant to the Eastern parts of the country. Does anyone know how the job market is like in Western Canada, or more specifically, in Vancouver?

I've spent a lot of time researching on career sites but have only been able to find 2 Actuarial job postings in BC, so most likely I am using the wrong method.

I also read it somewhere that the demand for actuararies may shrink as technologies improve. Is that true?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot.

I used to have this awesome list of almost all the companies that hire actuaries in Canada along with contact information for actuarial departments within the companies. Unfortuantely it's gone now, but for sure there are tons of companies over on the west side.

i assume you mean programs that do the pricing etc..etc... these are written by actuaries and used by actuaries. So while there are probably less actuaries than say 15 years ago, the SOA/CAS/CIA artificially creates a short supply of actuaries via the professional designations. So companies will always be looking even if they aren't posting jobs.

BTW, you should check an recruiter dedicated to actuaries for employment. Or just hammer insurance companies with your resume.

I'd say the demand for actuaries isn't that great in Vancouver. The ICBC's actuarial department has ~20 people and currently has a co-op. PBC has 3 permanent actuaries and 1 rotating co-op. Take a look at the SOA directory; most of the actuaries in Vancouver are in consulting.

Thanks so much for your replies. Actually I don't know enough about the profession to determine which area I want to work in. I am trying to switch jobs (I am a software engineer now), my primary goal is to stay in Vancouver, and I've looked at the exams and job description of Actuary and they seem to be what I like.
