Tablets are the latest must–have gadget, and given their ease of use, portability, and price, you might consider them a better deal than a laptop for school. But laptops still come out ahead for things like taking notes, research, and writing essays. With many tablets starting at near the $500 mark, there is no reason laptops can't complete on the pricing front as well. Here are some basic laptop buying tips that will help you save money:

1. Don’t buy the first laptop you can put your hands on (or see for sale online). It's essential to do some research beforehand. Read product reviews and get a feel for features and general pricing. You'll want to do this before heading into stores.

2. Hunt for deals! This one is pretty obvious, but make sure you pay attention to the latest coupons and offers! If you're on a tight budget, it is absolutely possible to find functional productivity laptops for $500 or less.

3. School work comes first. When it comes down to it, you probably don’t need a $2000 laptop with all of the trimmings to be productive.

4. Size Matters. It might be nice to watch movies on a big laptop screen, but space is a luxury in some classrooms and lecture halls. A smaller laptop will be easier on your back, too.

5. Save some money for accessories. You’ll probably want a flash drive, carrying case, and wireless mouse, among other things.

Just like in school, doing your homework when buying your laptop will pay off. If you make an informed purchase, you can get a laptop that meets your needs and saves money.
