A new school year comes with a flood of big purchases. After tuition, furnishing your dorm and buying school supplies, you still need to worry about the biggest beast of all: textbooks.

With textbooks often costing upwards of $100 each, a full-time student can easily end up spending more than $1000 on them each year. Here are some simple ways to save:

  • Keep an eye on the bulletin boards on campus. Students often sell their used textbooks at a discount. Make a list of the books that you need and keep it on you.
  • Head online and save. Beyond being a source of coupons and deals, we regularly do weekly flyer roundups that highlight low priced items.
  • Visit our Buy, Sell, and Trading forums to search for textbooks. Do research online to compare prices of used copies before buying
  • Textbook rental websites have started to pop up in Canada. These services allow you to rent a book for a semester, a quarter or a month.
  • Look for textbook tax credits from your provincial government. Amounts vary by province, but a full-time student can receive up to $65 and a part-time student can receive $20 for each month they’re enrolled.

Don’t worry about buying all your textbooks on the first day of class; the lines are long and the prices will be high. Take a few days to sort out your strategy and you can save time and money.
