Back To School: Tips For Saving Money On Campus
It's Back To School time and that means you might be a bit short on cash. Here's a short list of ways to save that you may not have tried yet:
- If your school allows it, pay your tuition with your rewards credit card. You can get reward points or cash back, just by using your card. This only works if you can pay off the balance right away.
- On campus, opt-out of the optional club fees and donations for charities you don't support.
- If you have health and dental coverage, opt-out of the additional coverage offered by your school.
- Check your school, your job, and local organizations for available bursaries and scholarships.
- Last but not least, keep your eye out for deals on school supplies and money-saving coupons here on RedFlagDeals.com.

Apple Refurb Store: Refurbished 80gb iPod Classic now $189 + Free Shipping
It looks like there's another good deal on a refurbished iPod product over at the Apple Store. You can now find the iPod Classic 80GB (current generation) for $189.00 with free shipping. This is a price reduction of $30 for the refurbished model. Purchasing a new unit from the Apple Store will still cost you $259. Just think, if you have a long commute, or are going to be spending long hours at the library, 80GB is plenty of space for music and movies.
Once again, we'll reiterate that Apple refurbished items have a great track record in terms of quality. We have yet to hear about a refurbished Apple product that wasn't essentially indistinguishable from new products besides the packaging.

Back To School: Keeping Yourself Fed For Less
So you're headed back to school. You've bought your textbooks for less, what's next? Feeding yourself for less. Eating is something that has to happen every day but there's no need to spend big bucks in the process.
- Store-bought beverages like bottled soda and water are much cheaper than those bought one-by-one from a vending machine or fast food joint. A good deal on an 18-pack of soda can end up running you 20 cents per can. Buy a mini-fridge for your dorm room and stock it with your favourites -- you'll never pay $2 a soda again.
- Similarly, packing a small selection of granola bars, trail mix, nuts or other portable snacks will save you the expense of on-campus snacking during the day
- If you're going to be living away from home, learn some simple, tasty recipes (and experiment now, while you can!). Whip them up in large amounts to serve as a few meals.
- We've got a nice selection of Food & Drink deals right here on RedFlagDeals.com -- hit our site before you head to the grocery store to maximize your savings
- Additionally, visit stores just before closing -- some like to sell off that day's prepared foods for cheap at the end of the day
Keep your eye on the RedFlagDeals.com Back To School Section -- we'll be adding deals, contests, articles and tips throughout August.

Rent Video Games by Mail, 2 Games at Once, $14.95/mth First Month
UPDATE: Aug 9, 1:05PM - They sign up offer price of $9.95 for one game and $14.95 for two is only valid for the first month. After that, prices are $17.95 for one game and $24.95 for two with 10-20% discounts for 3 or 6 months pre-paid plans. Thanks to nriding in the comments for catching that.
GameAccess.ca offers video game rentals by mail in a fashion very similar to Zip.ca, but focused entirely on video games for home and portable console platforms like PS3, Wii, Xbox 360, and the DS. They've been in business for a couple years. As a sign up offer you can have one game out at a time for $9.95 per month or two out at a time for just $14.95 per month. If you're not ready to sign up just yet, they do have a 10-day free trial.
The service is very simple: you select the games you'd like to play and put them on a list, they ship the games free to your house, you play as long as you like and send it back with a pre-paid envelope when you're done. No late fees, no need to drive to the video store and at this price it's a lot of gaming for your dollar. Perfect distraction when going back to school...

Dell: MS Office Home & Student $100, Sony DCRHC62 1MP MiniDV Handycam w/Batt, Case, DVC $359 & More
Here's a hodgepodge of deals we've found over at Dell.ca to get you going:
According to PriceCanada.com, you won't find the DCR-HC62 alone for cheaper than $315 or so at other retailers. The battery Dell includes in the bundle, the Sony NPFH50 InfoLITHIUM H Series Rechargeable Battery Pack itself retails for no less than $65. Add in case and a Sony 60 Minute Digital Video Cassette too (probably about $7-$10 at retail) as well as free shipping and the package looks pretty appealing.
Microsoft Office Home & Student at $99.99 is also a good buy. This is the retail package which usually costs around $170, so this offer is certainly something to keep in mind for back to school needs.
Rounding out the bunch is the Limited Edition God of War Red PSP Bundle. You get a uniquely designed Red Sony PSP, God of War: Chains of Olympus, Superbad, and a Traveler Case. Other retailers selling this bundle for $199.99 don't include the case (or the free shipping).

Textbook Buying Tips for Students
As much as it may hurt your sun and vacation addled brain to think about, the start of a new school year looms! That means it's time to start thinking about how you can save some money for the cold, educational months ahead. We're here to make things easier for you though. Check the left sidebar for the Back To School tab. Currently, you'll find some early back to school deals, coupons, and a contest to win a MacBook or an iMac. We'll be adding even more deals, contests, articles, and tips throughout August, so keep an eye out. To kick things off, here are some handy tips on how to save money on textbooks:
- Borrow textbooks you need from your friends or the library. This might be difficult around exams, so plan ahead.
- If you need to buy a book, try to find used textbooks through used bookstores, campus bulletin boards, and online forums like the Textbook Buy, Trade, and Sell Forum here at RedFlagDeals.com.
- If you must buy new, shop around. Check online stores and look for money-saving coupons.
- Sell your old textbooks for cash. Again, a great place to start is the our very own Textbook Buy, Trade, and Sell Forum.
- Choose your courses and find out about required texts sooner rather than later. Knowing what books you will need will give you more time to shop around and find deals.
