Small Business Resources
I have a few ideas. I also have a business that I wish to continue with and therefore wish to sell my ideas. One of the big ideas is to do with soccer. I contacted Manchester United twice, albeit no answer. Would there be a particular person that I should contact? Another idea pertains to the poultry industry yet I do not know where to start. Again I made contact but no answer. Where do I go from here?
James, Your question actually raises an issue that is important for all entrepreneurs to consider. Before I get to that, let me address the first question as asked. In short, I don’t have enough information to provide you with meaningful assistance. Professional sports teams will generally have a marketing department and a Public Relations person who might be able to help. They will also have a director of personnel and equipment manager. Depending on the nature of your idea, you would have to direct your inquiry to the right person. That might mean some research to find out the person’s name before you contact them. You may also want to pitch your idea locally before trying to do business across the pond. Find out what the response might be like so that you can modify like before you pitch to the biggest players. Now here is the bigger issue. You currently have a business that you have some real passion for. You then have an idea for European soccer and another for poultry. So, here is the issue to discuss: Focus. It is in the nature of entrepreneurs to be idea generators. However, you can fall victim to a common ailment that call “Idea-itis” It feels fun to come up with lots of ideas and it creates the belief that you are just around the corner from making it big. In fact, for most people this is a fallacy. Yes, I know there are lots of very rich and successful people who do lots of things. However, for the most part, that isn’t how they got rich. They did so by focusing on one thing until it was successful enough to hand off to someone else to manage before jumping on to the next one. I often hear many entrepreneurs define themselves as creative because they have lots of ideas. I want you to reconsider the word “creative.” Look at it. What is its core? It is “Create.” If you haven’t created something, you haven’t been creative. You might be imaginative. But that, by itself, doesn’t cause change in the world or develop wealth for yourself. I understand that it is hard and painful to choose one idea. It feels like you are abandoning your other ideas. But – and forgive me for sounding callous – get over it. Make a choice, stick to it, make it work and then go on to your next one. I am passionate about this as I have seen too many very good people with very good ideas languish in frustration because they are always jumping from idea to idea like a hummingbird flits from flower to flower. Focus or fall. Success is yours... go get it, Warren
