Apple: New iMacs (inc. 27” model with IPS 2560x1440 display for $1799), New Mac mini & More

Yesterday (October 20), Apple took the wraps off new revisions of the iMac, Mac mini, and the MacBook (non-pro).

We'd say the biggest changes come to the iMacs, which now pack 16:9 widescreen LED-backlit IPS panels. In that department, we think the $1799 27" iMac with a 3.06GHz Core 2 Duo Processor, 2560 x 1440 resolution, 4GB RAM, 1TB hard drive, and Radeon 4670 is is actually a pretty appealing deal. An LED-backlight 27" IPS display with staggering resolution would surely cost a pretty penny, so we consider that a big part of the price tag. The actual computer hardware isn't too shabby either.

Elsewhere, the Mac mini has gotten some hardware upgrades (faster Core 2 Duo processor, more RAM, and bigger hard drives). Apple has also introduced a Mac mini server, which omits the optical drive and instead, allows for a second hard drive. The news on the MacBook front is less exciting -- it gains unibody construction but uses white plastic instead of aluminum like the more expensive MacBook Pros.

Apple: New iPod Models, Price Drops on Refurb. 2nd Gen. iPod Touches (inc. 32GB $249)

Apple has updated most of its iPod lines for Fall 2009. Apple announced new versions of the iPod Touch, Nano, and new colours for the current Shuffle.

The iPod Touch hasn't seen a big overhaul, but it now sports a faster processor and lower prices. The 8GB model is $219, the 32GB model is $329, and a new 64GB model is $429.

On the iPod Nano front, Apple has added a video camera, a larger screen, FM radio with Live Pause, and brought back the anodized aluminum finish. The 8GB model will set you back $169, while the 16GB variety comes in at $199.

As for the tried and true iPod Classic, its capacity has been bumped from 120GB to 160GB. The price remains unchanged.

If the new offerings don't appeal to you, you can always check out the Apple Refurb Store. There, prices on refurbished 2nd generation iPod Touches have dropped accordingly. The 8GB model is $169, and 16GB model is $239, and the 32GB model is $249.

    • Windows Vista Home Basic
    • Intel Core 2 Duo T6670 (2.20GHz,2MB L2 Cache,800MHz FSB) (manually selected)
    • 13.3 inch WXGA Anti-Glare Display
    • 3GB DDR2 SDRAM at 800MHz, 2 DIMM
    • 160GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive

    • 8X DVD+/-RW with double-layer DVD+/-R write capability
    • Dell Wireless 1397 802.11b/g Mini Card
    • 4-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery
There have definitely been some good laptop offers recently, but this one isn't bad at all (especially since lots of the aforementioned deals have expired). It weighs in at just over 4lbs with a 4-cell battery. Upgrades to consider include Vista Premium for $30, a 6-cell battery for $60, and Bluetooth for $30.

Shipping is free, and since it's part of the Vostro line, it also comes with a 30-day no hassle return policy. That means if you decide not to keep it, there are no restocking or return shipping fees to contend with.

Bell Mobility: Samsung Ace World Edition Windows Mobile QWERTY Phone $99.95

Pick up a Windows Mobile smartphone on a budget at Bell.ca. They've got the Samsung Ace World Edition phone available for only $99.95 with no contract to worry about. Being a World Edition phone, it contains a slot for a SIM card which can then be used when you're traveling abroad. The phone itself comes with Windows Mobile 6.0, a full QWERTY keyboard, 5-way navigation control, track-wheel, 1.3MP camera with video capture, 2.3" LCD with 320x240 resolution (they've got a typo on their page), 64MB RAM, Bluetooth 2.0, and a MicroSD card slot - that's a lot of features for under $100.

Online it doesn't seem like you can check out without selecting a plan so that makes swapping phones for existing Bell Mobility customers a bit difficult. For any Bell Mobility customers out there, can you check out without the contract after logging into your existing account? Post the results in the comments. The price should be the same in stores as well though.

Apple Refurb Store: Price Drops on SSD-Equipped MacBooks (Aluminum 2.4GHz 13.3” w/128GB SSD $1399)

There have been quite a few price drops in the Apple Refurb Store recently, and another big one has come along. SSD (solid state drive) equipped aluminum Macbooks have hit some tempting price points. Here are the details:

Refurbished MacBook 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo - Aluminum $1299
    • 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor
    • 13.3-inch 1280-by-800 pixel LED-backlit display
    • 2GB memory
    • 128GB Solid State Drive
    • 8x SuperDrive (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
    • Built-in iSight camera
    • NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics processor
    • Standard keyboard
    • Wireless N & Bluetooth
Refurbished MacBook 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo - Aluminum $1399
    • 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor
    • 13.3-inch 1280-by-800 pixel LED-backlit display
    • 2GB memory
    • 128GB Solid State Drive
    • 8x SuperDrive (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
    • NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics processor
    • Built-in iSight camera
    • Illuminated keyboard
    • Wireless N & Bluetooth
These are both very good values for MacBooks with solid state drives. The $1399 version gets our nod with a fast 2.4GHz processor and the striking illuminated keyboard.

It bears repeating that Apple refurbished products come in great shape. They're essentially indistinguishable from new products besides the packaging, and they come with the same 1-year warranty as new Apple products. Shipping is free.

July 29 Update: The Apple Refurb store has restocked many of the latest Macbooks. In some cases, like the 1.86Ghz Macbook Air, the prices have been lowered, too.

    • Refurbished MacBook Pro with 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 15.4" LED display, 2GB RAM, 250GB HD, NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT graphics processor and integrated NVIDIA GeForce 9400M, 8xDVDRW, iSight Camera, and Illuminated Keyboard - $1549.00 $1499.00
    • Refurbished MacBook Pro with 2.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 17" LED display, 4GB RAM, 320GB HD, NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT graphics processor and integrated NVIDIA GeForce 9400M, 8xDVDRW, iSight Camera, and Illuminated Keyboard - $2199.00 $1849.00
    • Refurbished MacBook Air with 1.86GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 13.3" LED display, 2GB RAM, 128GB solid state drive, NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics, 802.11N Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and iSight Camera - $1699.00 $1649.00 $1599.00
As we've often mentioned, Apple refurbished products come in great shape -- essentially indistinguishable from new products save for the packaging. Refurbished Apple products even carry Apple's standard 1-year warranty.

Thanks goes to rivet for spotting the deal, and to RASHID007 for letting us know about the restock!

Newegg.ca: Pioneer Elite X-Z9 Hi-Fi Network Media Audio System $449.99 + Free Ship (in stock again)

In July, Newegg.ca had the stereo/sound system Pioneer Elite X-Z9 Hi-Fi Network Media Audio System on sale on and off. The lowest price it reached was $449.99, and didn't take too long for it to sell out. The good news is that it's been restocked! You can once again purchase the Pioneer Elite X-Z9 Hi-Fi Network Media Audio System for $449.99 with free shipping. The is actually priced at $699.99 US at Newegg.com at the moment, and the original price for these in 2008 was in the $1500-$1700 range. This is a big discount!

Reviews for this system are very positive. In addition to 5 user reviews that have all given the system a score of 5/5 on Newegg, GoodSound.com states that "Pioneer has put together a fabulous product in the incredibly versatile Elite X-Z9 compact stereo system. Elsewhere, DigitalTrends.com gives the system an editor's choice award and says that "the Pioneer Elite X-Z9 is a solid system with few quirks that make it enjoyable for those that are just into their music and want a system capable of great sound and lots of features. The quality of the sound, combined with the functionality and overall design make this a good investment choice for an all in one audiophile solution."

Remember, Newegg.ca's handling fees are Canadian taxes. The only extra charge you incur is a $1 US fee for brokerage.
