New from Google: Free Calls to the US/Canada from inside GMail

This one is pretty cool! A few days ago, Google rolled out a new feature for Gmail -- the ability to call US and Canadian phone numbers for free. Voice chat has been available through Google Chat for some time, but the official ability to call phones directly is new. You'll need to install the Google voice and video chat plugin. After that, you should be able to use the "Call phone" option under "Chat" inside Gmail. Technology news outlets have reported that the free calling between the US and Canada is good until the end of the year. After that, Google hopes that international calling fees will keep the serivce between Canada and the US free.

Google didn't make the "Call phone" option immediately available to all Gmail accounts, but they have been rolling it out steadily since August 25. If you don't see it yet, it should appear soon.

Free Sample of Boss Orange by Hugo Boss

Do we detect the scent of a free fragrance sample? Yes we do! Head over to Boss-Fragrances.com and you can request a free sample of Hugo Boss Orange for women. Even though it's a US site, you can select Canada from the drop down menu, so it looks like fair game. To request the sample, you'll have to provide the usual assortment of personal information like your name, mailing address, and an email address. There's a limit of one sample per household and you must be at least 18 years of age. You are asked to allow 28 days for delivery.

In the past, some people have experienced hiccups when it comes to entering a postal code. You may have to enter it twice, or try variations of all caps with spaces and without. Good luck!

Amazon Kindle 3 from $139 US, 2 Kindle Word Games Free for All Kindle Owners

Amazon.com announced the latest version of the Kindle, the third generation, on July 28th and this past week has just shipped the first units to customers. For the longest time it's been listed as sold out on Amazon.com, but now it's back to being available to order for a mid-September delivery. The new WiFi only version of the Kindle is only $139 US plus $10 shipping while the Kindle 3G + WiFi is $189 US plus $10 shipping. Kindles ship from the US so you'll also have to pay an import deposit that they'll spell out at checkout.

With the first units arriving the reviews have started coming in and they're all pretty much on the same page including this one from Engadget. The price is right and as a dedicated eBook reader you can't beat the Amazon eBook store. The higher contrast screen, larger storage space, smaller size, and lighter weight add to the experience. The browser is now also based on WebKit and much better than the previous Kindle browser - though that's not a very high bar.

If you have a Kindle already, and for future Kindle owners, you can also download two Amazon.com developed word games for free - Every Word and Shuffled Row.

EverQuest II Extended - Free Online Massively Multiplayer RPG

The game that started the entire massively multiplayer online RPG craze is moving to a free-to-play model with the release of EverQuest II Extended for the PC. It's currently in beta but you can play for free right now, with no credit card required, and you can go all the way up to level 80 for your character.

They call the free plan the Bronze plan and if you want to pay you can get the Silver, Gold, and Platinum plans. They've got a handy chart to show you the differences between the plans and basically it comes down to less options and the loss of some features but the core game is still definitely there and well worth the price of free admission.

Free On Steam: Alien Swarm PC Game (includes 4-player multiplayer co-op)

Free video games are always a welcome sight! Valve, the developer that has brought us big titles such as Half-Life, Portal, Team Fortress 2, and Left 4 Dead, has released a new game for free. It's called Alien Swarm -- a top down 3D shooter where you fight your way through, wait for it... swarms of aliens. It's squad based, and supports up to 4 players in cooperative multiplayer action. There are persistent items to be unlocked by gaining levels and over 40 weapons -- pretty swanky for a free game.

The Onion A.V. Club rates in an "A" while Destructoid gives it a 7.5/10, calling it "an enjoyable shooter at an absolute steal of a non-price." We'll take it!
