Apple Store Back to School Promotion: Buy A Mac, Get a Free iPod and a $100 Rebate on Printers

September 5 Update: Last call. Only 2 days left and it's the only time of year they'll do this promotion. Traditionally, this is better than any offers they have for Black Friday or Boxing Week.
August 17 Update: Back to school is drawing close! If you're thinking of going to the Mac route, this is easily one of the best deals available.
Originally Posted May 25 With school still in session in most places, it might seem a little bit early to think about back to school shopping, but that hasn't stopped Apple from starting their annual back to school promotion. You can once again buy a Mac and get a free iPod through September 7, 2010.

Here's how it works: if you’re a college student or a faculty or staff member at any grade level, purchase an applicable iMac or Mac in the Apple education store and an iPod at the same time by September 8. Then, submit the mail-in-rebate (PDF) and you'll be reimbursed for the cost if the iPod (before taxes). To clarify, while the iPod Touch features prominently on the promotion page, the rebate form itself clearly states that other iPods are available for this promotion.

There's more! Along with the free iPod, Apple has a pre-existing offer where the you can get a $100 rebate on a printer with the purchase of a Mac. It works the same way as the iPod offer -- buy a printer at the same time as a Mac and submit the appropriate rebate form. We've seen lots of reports that you can indeed get both -- just send all the UPCs at once and the accompanying rebate forms.

Keep in mind that Apple discounts the cost of the Macs with the Apple Education Discount, so you are actually saving anywhere from $50 to $200 on the Mac itself.

Lenovo: RedFlagDeals.com Exclusive 35% Discount on $1500+ ThinkPads Available Again! (updated)

September 1 Update: Even better news! The offer has been extended through September 5!
Originally posted August 30: Good news, everyone! If you missed out on it before, RedFlagDeals.com and Lenovo.com Canada once again bring you a RedFlagDeals.com Exclusive discount of 35% off most ThinkPads when you spend $1500 or more. Use coupon code CAPREDFLAGDEALSEXCLUSIVE.

Just like before, the coupon is also good for 20% off most ThinkPads if you spend under $1500, but if you are anywhere near spending $1220, the best bang for your buck is to add upgrades to reach $1500. The bigger discount at that point means you will get about $300 in upgrades for the same cost!

There are a couple of exceptions for the code: G and U Series ThinkPads get a 5% discount, IdeaPads get 10%, and the ThinkPad Edge gets a 10% discount.

The coupon code is good until 11:59 PM ET on September 1.

    Here are some sample configurations:

$990.60 Enhanced ThinkPad X201 with integrated graphics

Chapters.Indigo.ca: Kobo eBook Reader is $128 through September 6 (Hot!)

It's a good time to be shopping for an eReader. The new Wi-Fi only Kindle at Amazon.com has just been made available to Canadians -- and the Kobo eReader from Chapters is on sale! Today through Monday, the Kobo eReader is just $128! That's cheaper than all of the other name brand eBook readers like the Kindle, Barnes & Noble Nook, and Sony Reader.

The Kobo has a 6" E Ink screen, 1GB internal memory, USB and Bluetooth connectivity, expandable memory, and very svelte dimensions (10mm depth, 221g weight). It is listed as supporting ePub, PDF, and Adobe DRM formats. That's a really nice set of features for just $128 -- but remember, the offer expires Monday, September 6 at 11:59 PM!

This offer is available online only. There's also a Cheap Reads Sale at Kobo if you're looking for some new eBooks. Happy Reading!

New from Google: Free Calls to the US/Canada from inside GMail

This one is pretty cool! A few days ago, Google rolled out a new feature for Gmail -- the ability to call US and Canadian phone numbers for free. Voice chat has been available through Google Chat for some time, but the official ability to call phones directly is new. You'll need to install the Google voice and video chat plugin. After that, you should be able to use the "Call phone" option under "Chat" inside Gmail. Technology news outlets have reported that the free calling between the US and Canada is good until the end of the year. After that, Google hopes that international calling fees will keep the serivce between Canada and the US free.

Google didn't make the "Call phone" option immediately available to all Gmail accounts, but they have been rolling it out steadily since August 25. If you don't see it yet, it should appear soon.

    Dell.ca: 15” Vostro 3500 Laptop w/Core i3-350m $529, 14” Vostro 3400 w/Core i3-370m $559

August 31 Update: Prices seem to have increased. The Vostro 3500 is still a pretty viable deal but the Vostro 3400 offer has cooled off with the price increase.
Orignally Posted August 30: If you've been shopping around all summer for an entry level laptop, we've noticed a couple of offers from Dell.ca that might meet your needs. Specifically, there are Core i3 offerings for the 15" Vostro 3500 and 14" Vostro 3400 that each come in at under $550.

    $539 $559 14" Vostro 3400 with Core i3-370m & Windows 7
    • Intel Core i3-370M Processor (2.4GHz, Dual Core/4 Threads, 3MB L3 cache)
    • 14.0 inch High Definition LED Display (1366 x 768) with Anti-Glare
    • Integrated 2.0MP Webcam and Digital Mic
    • 320GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive
    • 2GB Single Channel DDR3 at 1066MHZ, 1 DIMM
    • Intel Integrated Graphics Media Accelerator HD
    • 8X DVD+/-RW with double-layer DVD+/-R write capability
    • Wireless Network Card 802.11 b/g/n
    • Dell Wireless 365 Bluetooth Internal (2.1 + Enhanced Data Rate)
    • 6-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery
    • Windows 7 Home Premium, 32-bit, English
    $518 $529 15" Vostro 3600 with Core i3-350m & Windows 7
    • Intel Core i3-350M Processor (2.26GHz, Dual Core/4 Threads, 3MB L3 cache)
    • 15.0 inch High Definition LED Display (1366 x 768) with Anti-Glare
    • Integrated 2.0MP Webcam and Digital Mic
    • 250GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive
    • 2GB Single Channel DDR3 at 1066MHZ, 1 DIMM
    • Intel Integrated Graphics Media Accelerator HD
    • 8X DVD+/-RW with double-layer DVD+/-R write capability
    • Wireless Network Card 802.11 b/g/n
    • Dell Wireless 365 Bluetooth Internal (2.1 + Enhanced Data Rate)
    • 6-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery
    • Windows 7 Home Premium, 32-bit, English
The systems are identically configured save for the slightly faster processor and bigger hard drive on the 14" model. We've seen similar configurations pushing about $550, but prices are a little bit lower here as you are getting 2GB of RAM. In the case of the Vostro 3500, it pushes the price close to the $500 mark for a Core i3 system. You can always add some RAM post-purchase when prices are favourable. It's also worth noting that Vostros come with English and not bilingual keyboards -- an important distinction for some shoppers.

    Shipping is free.
