GM Canada: Cash For Clunkers Program - Save Up to $3300 On a New GM Vehicle!
You may have heard of the successful Cash For Clunkers program in the US -- well, now it's our turn! GM Canada is the latest automaker to offer Cash For Clunker incentives to its Canadian customers.
This offer provides you with a rebate of $500, $1000, $2000, or $3000 towards the purchase or finance of a new, more fuel-efficient 2009-2010 GM vehicle when your pre-1995 vehicle is accepted into the Federal Government's Retire Your Ride program.
The Retire Your Ride program recycles your old vehicles and allows you to choose from several reward options, including transit passes, bicycles, car-sharing memberships, or $300 cash/vehicle rebate. To be eligible for the Retire Your Ride program (and therefore the Cash For Clunkers program), your automobile must be a 1995 model year or older, in current running condition, and must have been registered and insured for the past six months (12 months for BC residents). For more information on Retire Your Ride, go here.
Once your clunker has been accepted into the Retire Your Ride program, you are eligible for the $500, $1000, $2000, or $3000 Cash For Clunkers rebates at GM Canada. Rebates can be applied to 2009 or 2010 GM models, rebate amounts vary depending on the vehicle you choose.
Unfortunately, it is not specified which rebate amount is valid for which vehicle, so you'll have to discuss that at your GM Canada dealership -- but GM's vice president of sales, service, and marketing did state in a press release that Chevrolet Equinox, GMC Terrain, Buick LaCrosse, Cadillac SRX and CTS Sportwagon are all options in the Cash For Clunkers program.
It is not noted how long this offer will be available, so if you're interested, take advantage of it soon before it disappears!

Buying a Car? Dealer Invoice Prices and 3 Bonus Reports at CarCostCanada.com
Right now is a good time to buy a new car with an abundance of 0% financing offers, cash incentives, 'cash for clunkers' style promotions, and in some cases, combinations of all three. To help you sort through all the details and get the best price consider spending the $39.95, or $29.96 for CAA members, to sign up for CarCostCanada.com's wholesale price reports. The reports break down all the available consumer incentives, financing rates, lease rates, factory to dealer rebates, and other promotions along with the wholesale or dealer invoice prices.
It's a great starting point for negotiating a price and with their standard package you get 5 reports. As a bonus though, if you complete a brief 2-minute member survey you'll receive an extra 3 dealer invoice price reports. To access the survey, login after signing up and click on the 'Members Helping Members Survey' link on your lower left hand corner. The survey is available to both new members and anyone who had signed up previously but only works once per account.

60-Day Money Back Satisfaction Guarantee When You Buy a GM
You may have seen the GM TV commercials touting their 60-day money back guarantee and been wondering whether it applies to Canada; the good news is it does! Under the theme of 'May the Best Car Win', GM is offering buyers of a new 2009 or 2010 Chevy, Buick, GMC or Cadillac vehicle up to 60 days to drive their car and have GM repurchase it if they're not satisfied. That's a unprecedented return policy on any new car from any manufacturer.
The details for promotions like this are of course very important and the full terms and conditions are available here. The biggest caveat is that the vehicle, "must have no more than $200 of damage as determined by GM or GM's agent. Such damage may include, without limitation, internal or external scratches, scrapes, dents, odors, rips, burns, etc." That's a pretty broad definition but understandably they don't want to take back damaged cars. Ultimately, how they apply the conditions will determine how attractive this promotion is and since it runs until November 30th, you do have time to wait and see if there are any complaints about problematic returns from consumers.

Ford Promos: $1000 off Select Models for Costco Members & Retire an Old Car for up to $3000 Credit
Ford is making a strong push to attract new car buyers. At the moment, we've spotted two promotions that could end up knocking a big chunk off the price of a new Ford automobile.
First up, Ford has a Recycle Your Ride program. Ford is working with the Clean Air Foundation and the government run Retire Your Ride program. If you turn in a working 1995 model year or older vehicle to the government Retire Your Ride Program and provide proof to a Ford dealer, you can be eligible for a credit of up to $3000 (you also qualify if you've already made use of the Retire your ride program). You can choose to take a cheque directly, or have the credit applied toward a new purchase of lease. Full details and instructions can be found here.
Second, Ford is offering people with a valid Costco membership a $1000 discount on select models -- the Fusion, Flex, Escape, and Edge (the Escape Hybrid and Fusion Hybrid also qualify). You'll need to bring the printable coupon (linked on the page), and your Costco membership card with you to a dealer. The fine print on the coupon also states that the offer is transferable to immediate family members living within the same household as the eligible Costco member.
We don't see anything in the literature that makes these offers mutually exclusive, so you're looking at the prospect of some significant savings if you can combine the two. In fact, the Costco coupon specifically states that it's "Available in addition to other offers."
If you're fast, you could also make it in time for the end of the Ford Employee Pricing promotion which was supposed to end on August 31st but has been held over to September 8th.

Chrysler + Retire Your Ride = Up to $1,800 in Additional Incentives
Hot on the heels of Hyundai's own 'Cash for Clunkers' style program, Chrysler has announced they're the first automaker to officially partner with Retire Your Ride and offer a total of up to $1,800 in additional cash incentives across Canada, excluding Quebec and BC. Like Hyundai, the program works on top of the existing Retire Your Ride program which offers $300 for your working 1995 or older automobile when you scrap it.
Chrysler will offer an additional $500 or $1500 on top of that depending on the model you're buy. For example, a Dodge Grand Caravan, Dodge Caliber, or Jeep Patriot will net you $500 discount while a Chrysler 300, Dodge RAM Heavy Duty, or Jeep Grand Cherokee are discounted $1,500. Click here for the full list of vehicles. Overall, not a bad incentive; nice to see the automakers pushing their own version of the Cash for Clunkers program and it certainly wouldn't surprise us if more automakers followed Hyundai and Chrysler's lead in the coming weeks.

Bluetooth + TTS GPS Deals: Refurb Garmin Nuvi 660 $160 + Free Ship, Refurb Nuvi 680 w/Traffic $175
We've spotted a pair of good GPS deals for the value conscious consumer! Both are Garmin Nuvi models equipped with Bluetooth and Text-to-Speech. They're refurbished products, but the value is undeniable.
First up, Newegg.ca has the Refurbished Garmin Nuvi 660 GPS (Text-to-Speech, Bluetooth) for $159.99. It's not a new model, but it's formerly one of Garmin's top of the line products. GPSMagazine gave it an editor's choice award in 2006. In our opinion, new value models at a similar price point don't eclipse the 660 (or 600 series in general) in terms of quality and features. It has 4.3" touchscreen, 2GB of on board memory, Bluetooth handsfree calling, the ever-important text-to-speech, an can serve as an MP3 player/photo viewer.
Elsewhere, TigerDirect.ca has the Refurbished Garmin Nuvi 680 GPS (Bluetooth, Text-to-Speech, and Dynamic Content From MSN Direct) for $174.97. The 680 is one step up from the 660 -- it includes a MSN Direct Receiver. That's a feature that should definitely be worth the $15 premium (plus the shipping charge) to some people.

Scrap-It: Turn in an Older Car & Get 24 Months of Transit Passes or $1000 Car-Sharing Credit (BC)
The BC Scrap-It program, available to residents of British Columbia, is designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by getting older vehicles off the road. What's in it for you? A whole lot, as it turns out!
Incentives of up to $1250 are available to BC residents who turn in an older (1995 or previous) car and either purchase a newer, fuel-efficient vehicle or simply do not replace the car at all.
Some of the incentives include:
- A 12 Month, Three-Zone Translink MultiPass (Lower Mainland)
- 24 Months of Adult BC Transit Monthly Passes (Victoria)
- For the purchase of a bicycle, a $100 discount at point of sale plus $600 from Scrap-It
- A $1000 Car-Sharing Credit with Zipcar, the Cooperative Auto Network or the Victoria Car Share Co-Op
- For the purchase of a new car, a $250 discount at point of sale plus either $500 or $1000 (depending on the vehicle purchased)
The program is open by application only and vehicles must be insured; produced in 1995 or before; registered in BC and in driving condition. Any break in insurance coverage in the previous 12 months will disqualify the vehicle. So there are a few hoops to jump through but the rewards are definitely worth it!

Good news for all the online shoppers out there, Amazon.com now ships a large selection of their Apparel, Automotive, Computers, Electronics, Home, Personal Care, Kitchen, Outdoor Living, Tools, Video Games and a few other categories to Canada through Amazon Global! Books, Music, and DVDs have always been deliverable to Canada, but the new product categories opens up a huge product selection. A quick look inside the electronics category indicated that over 10,000 items are shippable to Canada, while inside of the Watches category, there are over 19,000 products.
Shipping charges range between $4.99 US and $7.99 US per shipment, plus an additional $1.99 US to $3.99 US per item. An import fees or duties that may apply will be visible during the checkout. The full Canadian shipping details can be found here. Amazon.com's prices are quite competitive to begin with, so even with the shipping and import costs, deals are bound to turn up for Canadians. The strong Canadian certainly helps, too.
You can see the entire Canada-shippable product selection from the first link, but you can also identify whether or not a given item ships internationally by looking in the "Product details" section. Under shipping it will say "This item is also available for shipping to select countries outside the U.S" or "Currently, item can be shipped only within the U.S".
A big thanks goes to Al Kaseltzer for spotting and sharing this!
