RedFlagDeals.com Mother's Day Gift Giving Guide

First Posted: April 30, 2008

Mother’s Day can be a harrowing time. You’ve got to think of a gift, you’re probably spending time with your family – it’s a lot of pressure! When you think about it, your mother’s satisfaction with her gift has direct bearing on your happiness. Just consider this possible exchange:

Random Mom: My son is finishing law school this year, he’s at the top of his class, and he gave me these cruise tickets for Mother’s Day.
Your Mom: My son gave me a scented candle.

Obviously, that isn’t a situation you want to place your mother or yourself in. Put some time and thought into your gift! After all, your mother deserves no less.

If you’re here at RedFlagDeals.com, you’re probably a savvy shopper already, so we're going to forgo the usual discussion about deals on flowers, jewellery, and candy. We think the real goal of Mother’s Day should be to show your appreciation, and not just the limit of your credit card. In a broad poll of mothers (namely, an informal poll of mothers of RedFlagDeals.com staff), most felt that more time and communication with their sons and daughters would be preferable to even the glitziest present. With that in mind, we’ve put together a little “gift breakdown” to ensure that your present is remembered, and remembered fondly:

Bland: a gift basket of soaps and bath products
Better: book a day at the spa for your mother
Best: book a day for you and your mother at the spa

Bland: promise to do some unpleasant work (like tar the roof)
Better: actually tarring the roof
Best: prepare a coupon book (with guarantees) of housework tasks and odd jobs that your mother can “redeem”

Bland: a piece of jewelery
Better: a tasteful piece of jewelery with family birthstones
Best: a tasteful piece of jewelery with a meaningful engraving

Bland: a vacuum (tell us it isn’t so)
Better: pay for a house cleaning
Best: pay for a house cleaning and take your mom out – it doesn’t have to be an expensive experience, just walk and talk, a drive in the country, or even visiting some garage sales. Spend the day with her.

Bland: a cook book
Better: cook your mom dinner (and clean up afterwards)
Best: a cook book and pick a recipe or two to cook with her (you know, so you can cook something good)

Bland: a book about your mother’s favourite hobby
Better: enrol your mother in a class about her hobby
Best: enrol yourself and your mother in a class about a hobby you both enjoy

Bland: a gift card to a restaurant
Better: treat your mother to lunch
Best: get the family together for a picnic

Bland: wash your mom’s car
Better: wash and wax your mom’s car
Best: wash and wax your mom’s car, and then fill up the gas tank

Bland: give your mom flowers
Better: find out your mom’s favourite flowers and get a custom arrangement
Best: sign your mom up for a “flowers of the month” club (you can substitute flowers with anything from chocolate, to wine, to cheese, to bacon)

Bland: a picture frame
Better: a digital picture frame
Best: a digital picture frame preloaded with family photos (your family, preferably)
