If you've got a pine-shaped hole in your heart, we suggest loading your year-round houseplants Christmas lights. You get the same glowing ambiance of Christmas lights without having to fork over $50 or more at the tree lot! And no tree doesn't have to mean no ornaments -- you can display your favourites on the mantel, in a glass bowl, or even hung from a chandelier. If you blew your budget on a tree, leaving the rest of the house decidedly undecorated, there are several simple low -- or no -- cost solutions: displaying Christmas cards always looks cheery, and they can be grouped on a table or bookshelf top, nestled in a basket with pine cones, or simply hung from a ribbon stretched across a bare wall. If you have kids -- or even if you don't -- have a snowflake making party! White paper, scissors, and a few snacks for your helpers is really all you need to make dozens of paper snowflakes. They can be taped to windows, hung from light fixtures, or tucked into picture frames. If you're determined to have a festive touches in every room, remember that there's no need to go from zero to 80 in one year. Pick a theme -- vintage Santa dolls, maybe, or Christmas Villages -- and add one piece to your collection each year. By amassing pieces slowly, you're avoiding a large one-time cost. And if you buy your festive Christmas pieces after Christmas, your savings will skyrocket! Last but not least -- there are dozens of Christmas music stations, both on the radio and on the internet, that play uninterrupted Christmas music -- for free! Nothing fills your home with holiday charm faster than festive music in every room. |
