Dell Quad Core PC Deals from $579 including $749 i5-750, $849 i7-860 & $999 Loaded i7-860 (updated)
October 27 Update: The configurations and prices have been changed around a little. All of the systems now feature Windows 7 and some have seen hardware upgrades (like 4GB RAM instead of 3, and 500GB hard drives instead of 250GB).
Originally Posted October 21: If you've been waiting for the right time to buy a new desktop PC, Dell.ca currently has an impressive selection of Vostro PCs with quad core processors to choose from. The release of Intel's new i5 and i7 processors has shaken things up (in a good way), and Windows 7 is now available as well. It's a good time to be considering a purchase.
At the "low end" of these deals, there is a Vostro 420 Tower with an Intel Core 2 Quad Q9400 Q8300. At the other end of the spectrum, $999 will get you a Core i7-860 equipped Vostro 430 PC with 8GB RAM, Windows 7 Pro, and a 1TB Hard drive. Here's a more detailed look at the systems:
- $579 Vostro 420 - Intel Core 2 Quad Q8300, 500GB HD, 3GB RAM, 512MB Radeon 3450, DVDRW, Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit
- $749 Vostro 430 - Intel Core i5-750, 500GB HD, 4GB RAM, 512MB Radeon 4350, DVDRW, Windows 7 Home Premium w/Media 32 bit
- $849 Vostro 430 - Intel Core i7-860 (manually selected), 500GB HD, 4GB RAM, 512MB Radeon 4350, DVDRW, Windows 7 Home Premium w/Media 32 bit
- $999 Vostro 430 - Intel Core i7-860, 1TB HD, 8GB RAM, 512MB Radeon 4350, DVDRW, Windows 7 Professional 64-bit
The Vostro 420 isn't bad, but if processing power is of the utmost importance to you, then you will definitely want to consider the i7-860 systems.
These systems offer great value in our book. For many mainstream users and certainly for businesses, it would be quite difficult to go the "build-it-yourself" route for comparable systems when you have to factor in manpower, all of the components, operating systems, assembly and testing, as well as shipping (which is free from Dell.ca).

The sale runs until November 17, but we wouldn't be surprised if a lot of chairs went out of stock online before that. Staples.ca has free shipping on orders over $50, so keep that in mind.

Acer Desktop PC w/Intel E5200 2.5Ghz, 4GB, 640GB, DVD Burner, HDMI, Windows 7 - $339
October 24, 7:48PM Update: Looks like XpressCanada.com has an even better price, by $11 at $338.75. XpressCanada.com seems to be owned by the same company as Canada Computers but they do not have any retail stores.
Originally Posted October 24: CanadaComputers.com has a very capable and complete PC with a free upgrade to Windows 7 for $349.99. The Acer AM3800-U3802A features an Intel E5200 2.5Ghz processor, 4GB of DDR3 memory, a 640GB hard drive, DVD burner, Intel integrated X4500 Graphics with HDMI out, a memory card reader, 7.1 channel audio, gigabit LAN, keyboard, mouse, speakers, and Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit. With the HDMI out and card reader, it could make a good home theatre PC as well, though it's a regular sized tower that takes up a bit more space.
Some companies force you to pay a small shipping fee to deliver your Windows 7 upgrade disc but thankfully Acer isn't one of them. All you have to do after you get your system is go online, fill out the request form, and wait for your disc in the mail.

Apple: New iMacs (inc. 27” model with IPS 2560x1440 display for $1799), New Mac mini & More
Yesterday (October 20), Apple took the wraps off new revisions of the iMac, Mac mini, and the MacBook (non-pro).
We'd say the biggest changes come to the iMacs, which now pack 16:9 widescreen LED-backlit IPS panels. In that department, we think the $1799 27" iMac with a 3.06GHz Core 2 Duo Processor, 2560 x 1440 resolution, 4GB RAM, 1TB hard drive, and Radeon 4670 is is actually a pretty appealing deal. An LED-backlight 27" IPS display with staggering resolution would surely cost a pretty penny, so we consider that a big part of the price tag. The actual computer hardware isn't too shabby either.
Elsewhere, the Mac mini has gotten some hardware upgrades (faster Core 2 Duo processor, more RAM, and bigger hard drives). Apple has also introduced a Mac mini server, which omits the optical drive and instead, allows for a second hard drive. The news on the MacBook front is less exciting -- it gains unibody construction but uses white plastic instead of aluminum like the more expensive MacBook Pros.

Free Audiobook - Free: The Future of a Radical Price by Chris Anderson
October 25 Update: As TianCaiWuDi pointed out in the comments, the online eBook version seems to be region restricted and only available to residents of the US. That means it's audiobook only for Canadians.
Originally Posted October 24: Chris Anderson, the editor of Wired and author of The Long Tail, has made his newest book free for reading online or as an audiobook. That of course makes perfect sense since the book is entitled Free: The Future of a Radical Price. Here's a brief overview of the book from Publishers Weekly, via Amazon.com:
In the digital marketplace, the most effective price is no price at all, argues Anderson (The Long Tail). He illustrates how savvy businesses are raking it in with indirect routes from product to revenue with such models as cross-subsidies (giving away a DVR to sell cable service) and freemiums (offering Flickr for free while selling the superior FlickrPro to serious users). New media models have allowed successes like Obama's campaign billboards on Xbox Live, Webkinz dolls and Radiohead's name-your-own-price experiment with its latest album. A generational and global shift is at play—those below 30 won't pay for information, knowing it will be available somewhere for free, and in China, piracy accounts for about 95% of music consumption—to the delight of artists and labels, who profit off free publicity through concerts and merchandising. Anderson provides a thorough overview of the history of pricing and commerce, the mental transaction costs that differentiate zero and any other price into two entirely different markets, the psychology of digital piracy and the open-source war between Microsoft and Linux. As in Anderson's previous book, the thought-provoking material is matched by a delivery that is nothing short of scintillating.
