May 9 Update: This offer is still available. $449 is a great price for sturdy 13.3" laptop. The processor could be faster, but for basic productivity needs like note taking, word processing, email, and surfing, this is a mighty good deal.
Dell has launched updated Vostro laptops, starting with a 13.3" model dubbed the Vostro 1310. The 1310 is, obviously, smaller than it's Vostro 1400 and 1500 brothers. A noteworthy upgrade is the 9-cell battery for $20. Other upgrades of interest are the Nvidia 8400M GS for $99 and the Touchpad with UPEK Fingerprint Reader for $35. It is a bit disappointing that there are no selectable processor upgrades, but a 13.3" notebook with Vostro build quality for a tick under $450 is a great bargain regardless. Shipping is free.

RBC: Free Asus EEE 2G Surf Laptop w/ Signature No Limit Banking or VIP Banking Account Opening
Here's a very interesting offer from the Royal Bank of Canada: when you open a new Signature No Limit Banking or VIP Banking Account between May 1, 2008 and September 12, 2008, you will be eligible to receive a free Asus EEE 2G Surf Laptop. There are definitely some hoops to jump through, but that can only be expected. Here's what you'll need to do:
- Use CustomSwitch to transfer your account balance and any pre-authorized payments from another Canadian financial institution.
- Transfer or set up at least two pre-authorized payments from your new account.
- Transfer your automated payroll direct deposit or monthly pension direct deposit to your new account. If you don't have an automated payroll deposit, there are other options - speak to an RBC representative for more information.
- Download and print the Change of Payroll Deposit form and submit it to your employer's payroll department.
- Select paperless statement option on your new account.
- Pay at least one bill through RBC Royal Bank Online Banking from your new account.
Once RBC has determined that you qualify for the EEE laptop, you will be contacted with further details. In addition to the above, your account will need to be active (1 transaction per month at least) until December 31, 2008. Make sure you read up on all of the account features/restrictions as well as the offer details, as there is quite a bit to go through.
