While discounts and freebies are always nice, carbon ‘offsets’ are a scam of global proportions that I would suggest noone participate in. This is hot air, not a hot deal.

You could at least explain yourself.
Better still, you could catch the next boat to Scotland.
Otherwise, find someplace else to go toss your tiny caber.

I find it funny that you have to type in a code for WJ to put 2% to offset carbon usage and promote it as “no extra charge” to you.
So what they are saying is basically, they want to see how many people saw their advertisement AND care about the enviroment enough to be bothered with typing in the code, else they would just keep the 2% as pure profit.
A better way to offset carbon is to just do it. Even if you advertise that you’re doing it while doing it would still be better than this.
This is just a ply to see if twitter is a good form for them to advertise. It doesn’t even explain how they are offsetting carbon footprint. Obviously this info is missing from their website too, since as I said, this is to test twitter’s effectability.

Great point NNN.
Granted, the whole offsetting carbon business is a bit funny to begin with. The only business incentive from the present standpoint is marketing.
The point is, though, if enough people care then it’s competitive for you to offset your carbon use as a business. And enough people _should_ care.
Just like people should care that almost everything we buy is from China. Or that big name grocers avoid local markets as policy (http://www.cbc.ca/canada/toronto/story/2009/07/14/f-grocery-stores-independent-buy-local-meat-produce.html).
The change has to start somewhere. Kudos for WJ for trying, but perhaps as NNN pointed out, their motiviations are misplaced. It would be great to get an official comment from them.

Coldest night in 57 years.
Welcome to global warming.
How about that 2 percent is used to teach people the difference between science and politics?

Oh please alphmega, don’t be so ignorant. Even you should be able to see the stupidity of your reasoning. Lest you missed high school and don’t know the difference average and extreme, or local and global.
Sheesh.

Hey adr1an, take your soapbox elsewhere. Global warming is turning into the next major religion, zealots on both sides and a lot of hot air… I do believe that calling people names is not permitted on this site.

Thanks for the info, I’ll take it under advice.
As for soapbox zealotry, you could try looking at who decided to bring “religion” into the picture.

adr1an: snow storm blankets the middle east, january 2009.
Abu Dhabi, 2nd time in recorded history, according to an Abu Dhabi newspaper (as reported by the BBC), snowfall on January 24, 2009. The locals don’t even have a word for it.
Global warming is a hoax; there are THOUSANDS of respected scientists (not politicians) who have come out against the unproven theory that global warming exists, and if it does exist is created by humans.
Stop mindlessly believing political propaganda and do your own research.

NYC fails to reach 85 degrees F in June for the first time since 1916.
June 2009 is in the top ten coldest months of june on record for NYC Central Park, at number 8, tied with June 1897.
I’ve now given you two spots at almost opposite sides of the globe as examples of the thousands of pieces of data that you can find on this topic. Where is the global warming? Global warming doesn’t exist.
Before you call someone ignorant, make sure that you have done more research than the person you’re calling out.
It saves embarrassment.

Adr1an’s style of repeated ad hominem attacks against purely political arguments are always a sign of advanced maturity. Methinks his state secondary school brainwashing has gone to plan.
Krozet is spot on about the climate change movement becoming a spiritual or dogmatic cause. Objective observation of conflicting science is no longer tolerated and a “consensus” of unreachable wise men in the IPCC make all the dictates to the masses at the bottom. Sad situation.
