Sync Your Files Across Computers, Online w/Free 2GB DropBox

Updated July 5: DesiMonk in the comments has a Microsoft alternative you can try at Sync.Live.com which has a Mac and Windows client. The limitation for that one isn't space but rather 20 folders with up to 20,000 files in each folder.
Originally posted July 4: If you find that you're emailing yourself files back and forth for between your work and home computer or if you want to be able to access certain files anywhere you have an Internet connection, DropBox could be the solution for you. Essentially it's a small piece of software that you install on your Windows, Mac, or Linux computer where you can drop files and have them synced between all your computers. It practice it basically is another folder that is accessible wherever you are, on any computer, or even just through the GetDropBox.com site. Best of all, 2GB of storage is absolutely free. If you need more storage, a 50GB pro account is $9.99 US a month.

Because of the way it syncs and also stores your files on the web, you can use it as a remote back up service as well. If you're looking for a back up service specifically though, check out Mozy.com which we've mentioned in the past. They also offer 2GB of storage, but the back up software automatically backs up folders and files in the background without you having to manually drop the files in.

@DesiMonk: Do your research before answering a question.

Yes, Live Sync is free, however it doesn’t solve the problem of being able to sync to a internet accessible folder which doesn’t require having the system you’re syncing turned on.

If you’re a more of a DIY person, have external drive, want to conserve power, and solve the same problem, I strongly recommend a Pogoplug (http://pogoplug.com/). It’s a great little device, powered by a great new little chip from Marvell (http://www.marvell.com/featured/plugcomputing.jsp).

Anybody spending money on NAS for their home and not considering a Pogoplug is a fool, plain and simple.

Dropbox is fantastic. Been using it for a few months now and its really made things easier for me synchronizing my files automatically across my home and laptop computers. I also find it nice as there’s a public folder which is nice because I can just throw things in that folder and get a link to give to other people. It’s quite convenient and I recommend you try it out if you haven’t already.

Another Microsoft product, Live Mesh will sync your files to ‘the cloud’. It gives your 5GB of internet storage for ‘free’ and will do peer to peer syncing of files if you desire.

I use this to keep my photos synced between my desktop and laptop computer and also put a documents folder on internet storage. It also has a remote desktop server built in that allows access through the corporate firewall.

I don’t know why Microsoft has these two products going into different directions but I think the ‘Live mesh’ product, which is in beta will become the standard.

For those that are Ubuntu fans, Canonical appears to have Ubuntu One (https://ubuntuone.com) which looks similar to Dropbox. I haven’t tried it since I’m using Dropbox myself.

I *LOVE* DropBox to the point where I don’t care about evaluating alternatives with more storage.

Dropbox is easy, fast, and super intuitive… Big thumbs up.
