This kind of promotion is in violation of the World Health Organization’s International Code of Marketing of Breast-Milk Substitutes, particularly parts of Article 5:
“5.2 Manufacturers and distributors should not provide, directly or indirectly, to pregnant women, mothers or members of their families, samples of products within the scope of this Code.
5.3 In conformity with paragraphs 1 and 2 of this Article, there should be no point-of-sale advertising, giving of samples, or any other promotion device to induce sales directly to the consumer at the retail level, such as special displays, discount coupons, premiums, special sales, loss-leaders and tie-in sales, for products within the scope of this Code. This provision should not restrict the establishment of pricing policies and practices intended to provide products at lower prices on a long-term basis.
5.4 Manufacturers and distributors should not distribute to pregnant women or mothers or infants and young children any gifts of articles or utensils which may promote the use of breast-milk substitutes or bottle-feeding.”

Shouldn’t you be talking to the World Health Organization? I just reported _their_ position.

I am a 50-something R.N. & fostermom to infants “in crisis” who takes addicted babies apprehended from junkie mothers right from birth to 12 mo. of age. How does the WHO propose I feed them????

I’m not sure I understand your point - there are plenty of medically necessary, but restricted substances. I would recommend reading the code to understand what it is they’re saying.

In other words, the WHO isn’t saying that formula should never be used, just that it shouldn’t be marketed in some ways. Surely as an R.N. in your position you can appreciate that people can be negatively influenced by things around them.

We are surrounded by things that can negatively influence us.

Like people reporting (supporting) the positions of others without taking one themselves…

Most parents can filter out the bs in marketing just fine.

Since I had this free sample sitting in the cupboard, I tried feeding my kid some Similac instead of his usual cow’s milk and he shunned it like the plague. You people really shouldn’t give your kids this artificial crap.

C’mon, you don’t really think that people shouldn’t use formula just because your kid didn’t care for it.

Even ciotog would agree that formula is a better substitute for breast milk then cow’s milk....

Yes, cow’s milk is extremely unsuitable for human infants. Henri NestlĂ© invented formula in part because of the high mortality rate for infants who were unable to breast-feed, and were given cow’s milk instead.
Next to the infant’s mother’s milk, and the milk of a healthy donor, formula is the next best thing.

@wujones: Nothing should substitute a mother’s milk unless the mother is sick and can’t produce any. I only started giving him cow’s milk after he was weaned. Let me point out that I’ve also given him another brand of formula (also a free sample) and he drank that no problem. It’s just Similac that seems fetid. My advice is to stay away from it.

Thanks for the warning though.
