Scotiabank StartRight For New Canadians: Free 1-Yr Unlimited Chequing, Safety Deposit Box
If you or someone you know is a new to Canada with landed immigrant status the Scotiabank StartRight program is designed for you and with it comes a wide range of perks that even Canadian citizens can't get. To get you started and help to fill your banking needs, the Scotiabank StartRight program will provide the following:
- Powerchequing unlimited chequing account, free for 1-year with no fees
- Cashable 1-year GIC with a 1% Rate Bonus
- Small 1.5" x 5" x 24" safety deposit box or 25% off a larger box, free for 1-year
There's actually a bit more than what we've listed above including a no-fee Moneyback 1% cash back credit card, but the rest of the services seem to be standard offers that anyone can get. You can read more about it on Scotiabank website which includes the program brochure with the requirements.
The requirements are actually pretty straightforward; all you need is your Proof of Landed Immigrant Status – Immigration Landing Document (IMM5292) and a valid photo identification from a foreign passport, driver’s license issued in Canada, Permanent Resident Card, or similar identification.

I’m a born and raised Canadian, and give Scotia thousands of dollars a year on my mortgage, chequing, VISA, and line of credit.
But I suppose I can just go f&^# myself.

This deal is pretty much what they give all Canadians who want to open up a new account, even the ones who were born here, so don’t feel too bad dnfm

Comments like this always depress me.
You’re correct dnfm - we Canadian-borns are so hard done by! I don’t know how we manage to survive in this crazy, unjust world of ours…

I too dislike this offer as it is indeed prejudice against those of us that were born in this great country. I have already sent my concern to scotiabank’s customer service and also my local mp. I have paid for these exact services for as long as I’ve banked with scotiabank. might not be doing that much longer if something doesn’t change about this. Sure all of these new arrivals to Canada could use some help getting going.........but so could our own children that are looking for employment in such a down economy right now and having no luck at all.

My personal opinion:
It’s a sensitive issue, but in the end, I think it’s ultimately a good offer that’s available to help some people get started. In some ways it’s like a seniors or a student offer or a ladies night - targeted to a particular group. It’s only one year as well.
I certainly don’t feel like they’re this is something they have against me, being born in Canada, rather it’s an offer for another group. Good for them.

the additional 1% on top of the normal GICs sounds like a good deal

This is bs man, when I went to Scotiabank at Broadview and Gerrard, the guy there told us that my wife could not open one of these accounts because I sponsored her here and she wasn’t from the investment class or the skilled workers class. Going to check with Scotiabank now.
