Overstock.com Launches Canadian Shipping—Good Deals, Decent Shipping Rates

Overstock.com now ships to Canada! They sell a big range of products -- everything from curtains to watches to clothes and shoes (including some very cute Patent Leather Ballet Flats for just $19). There are tons of bargains in a broad range of categories so it's definitely worth giving the site a look.

We notice that they've done a couple of things well: for one, products that cannot be shipped to Canada are labelled as such right on the product page. Many US-based stores are much less clear about what can and cannot be shipped to Canada and will not let you know until you are nearly done with the check-out process. They're also really clear about the final cost of shipping the product and they lay out the shipping, tax, and tariffs well in advance of the final payment screen.

I’m not sure what other peoples experiences have been like at overstock.com but I can tell you that ours has been a huge disappointment.

Shipping Rates \ Currency Conversion \ Taxes & Customs Tariffs

Everyone of these has been grossly exaggerated or simply inaccurate. The company they use “51” as an order consolidator gives an exchange rate for US\Canadian dollar that is far from reality. 14 US = 19 CAN – Not sure what is happening here other than if your Canadian this is their first chance at screwing you.

Secondly Customs Tariffs \ Taxes are insane … On $433.21 they charged us $68 dollars in customs. I just bought a $1200.00 montecristo fino hat and paid less than half in customs tariffs.

Here is the REAL screw to you Canadian. $129.67 in shipping charges for 13 shirts. This is after advertising free shipping all weekend to my Canadian email address.

So on an order that was originally $370.00 American grew to $433.21 Canadian (this is according to screw you currency exchange) Then add their exceedingly inflated Tariffs of $67.56, $129.67 shipping, and finally $30.98 in taxes?

So in the end this order ended up being $661.42 Canadian from $370.00 American with free shipping.

So what is the end result of this? I think they people who are short selling this company know that with service like this, and zero integrity that their stock only has one direction to go – DOWN, DOWN, and DOWN.

So if you think as an international customer you got a deal here. Be careful

Too bad that they screw the Canadian company. I lived in the US and LOVED overstock.com with the bargains and the $2.95 everyday shipping or the free shipping offers. I saw that they were shipping to Canada and went to the US “site” and looked for Bed Head Manipulator because even though a 2oz size regular price in the US is $10-$15, it is $40-$50 here in Canada. The US Overstock.com said that it was $35.45 for 3 - 2oz jars, with a moderate chance for selling out, when I changed to the Canadian “site” it was $40.94 for the same 3 jars, but suddenly was not available. I wonder if they can’t sell some of the things you see on their web site to Canada at any cost. I changed back to the US version and it appeared again.  Weird that I went back today and it didn’t happen again the same way. You can’t see the shipping charges until you fillout a bunch of info (I am assuming since I didn’t so this). It SUCKS that when US companies DO ship to Canada there is hidden over inflated charges that come with it. Same on Overstock.com

oops, didn’t mean they “screw the Canadian company” I meant they “screw the Canadian shopper”

that is really too bad, as I have always looked at the website and thought I could save a bundle if only they shipped to Canada...but I am not willing to get ripped off.

If you do order anything- e-mail (or call if possible) to get the FULL total before you order. They should be able to estimate the duty and taxes for their customers so there are no surprises

gchelak, Overstock.com supplies the full total before the payment page. They are very good about detailing the costs so there are no surprises.

Just a point of comparison for folks so it is easily understood how inflated overstock.com’s shipping rates are to Canada. Above I mentioned they charged me $129.00 for shipping 13 shirts.

The next day I purchased a compressor based ice cream maker from a company in philidalphia. The weight of this machine came to 35LBS. They charged me $24.00 U.S for shipping. How much do you think 13 shirts weigh? Shipping is all charged by the size of the item as well. 13 shirts would be less weight and definatly shipped in much less bulkier packaging than my new ice cream maker.

So the point of this Kate N is not that they are “good” about shipping charges, etc. I will grant them that.  The point is their shipping rates are not based in reality. I have never dealt with a company that so inflated their shipping rates in my life.

There is also the problem of not giving fair trading value for the Canadian dollar. They say their system does not have access to a currency converter, which is silly in it’s self. If it is indeed set manually the Canadian dollar has been on par with the American dollar for just about a year now. They started shipping to Canada in September so the incredible disparity in exchange rates smacks of a dishonest, artificial inflation of the actual price.

Customs, Tariff, and taxes are all inflated as well. So my point is unless overstock.com addresses these important issues I can’t see it being cost effective for Canadians to shop there.

I guess the only surprise is the inflated prices on Overstock.com, but we Canadian are already use to that.

I just ordered a suit.  Total cost was $125.00 including all taxes, shipping, duties etc.  Show me where you can get a 100% wool suit for that kind of money here in Canada.  After alterations the suit will run around $200.00. Very happy with Overstock.com

Howardake,

If you are willing to wear a $100.00 suit what else is there to say?

Nevermimd the fact that you didn’t tell any of us shipping costs etc.

In a nut shell we have a guy in a $100 dollar suit telling us the the way it is without telling us anything! Something sounds familiar about this.

Rediron777,

You miss the point.  I was satisfied with the purchase I made from the website.  Regardless of what it was or how much it cost.

I will continue to purchase items from Overstock.  Good prices, reasonable shipping charges, fast timely delivery. If you had a poor experience with them.  Shop eleswhere.

Thanks

Completely insane and unreasonable shipping charges.  You’re better off buying elsewhere.
