    New Dell Vostro 1310 13.3” Laptop: Celeron 1.86GHz M540, 1GB RAM, 160GB HD, XP/Vista $449! Hot!

May 9 Update: This offer is still available. $449 is a great price for sturdy 13.3" laptop. The processor could be faster, but for basic productivity needs like note taking, word processing, email, and surfing, this is a mighty good deal.

Dell has launched updated Vostro laptops, starting with a 13.3" model dubbed the Vostro 1310. The 1310 is, obviously, smaller than it's Vostro 1400 and 1500 brothers. The revamped Vostros, according to Dell, are "thinner, lighter, and more secure". The first deal out of the gate is a Celeron M M540 equipped Vostro 1310 Notebook for $449 with your choice of Windows XP Home or Vista Home Basic. Here are the specs:
    • Intel Celeron M M540 (1.86GHz, 1M L2 Cache, 533MHz FSB)
    • Windows XP Home Edition or Windows Vista Home Basic
    • 13.3 inch UltraSharp™ Wide Screen XGA LCD Display w/TrueLife™
    • 1GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz, 2 DIMM
    • 160G 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
    • 8X DVD+/-RW with double-layer DVD+/-R write capability, Data Only
    • IntelJ Integrated Graphics Media Accelerator X3100
    • Dell Wireless 1395 802.11g Wi-Fi Mini Card
    • High Definition Audio 2.0
    • 1 Year Basic Limited Warranty plus 1 Year Mail-in Service
    • 58 WHr 6-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery
Link to the Windows XP Home Configuration
Link to the Windows Vista Home Basic Configuration

A noteworthy upgrade is the 9-cell battery for $20. Other upgrades of interest are the Nvidia 8400M GS for $99 and the Touchpad with UPEK Fingerprint Reader for $35. It is a bit disappointing that there are no selectable processor upgrades, but a 13.3" notebook with Vostro build quality for a tick under $450 is a great bargain regardless. Shipping is free.

what’s the deal with the crappy CPU

Well, the CPU won’t make it a power house, but it’s double the speed of an overclocked EeePC, and that is really fine for a lot of things.

Careful, this is the one with the whacked up keyboard according to this guy;

I think the keyboard issue only affects the European models. This is the North American model: http://www.notebookreview.com/assets/32661.jpg

running Vista with 1 Gb of RAM.  Yeah, I might as well use a pocket calculator.

pepa

Well, naturally you’d take the XP option (or upgrade the RAM).

Would the video card upgrade actually be worth it with that crappy CPU?

Is there anywhere in the GTA to look at Dells in person?  I’ve never bought one but this seems like a decent deal for my GF that just wants it for web browsing/IM/email/word processing/etc.  She wants to see it and preferably play with one before she buys though.

especially because it has crappy CPU, an upgraded video card will actually be a great help.  You can see this item at Dell kiosk at Vaughn Mills.

Hmm I was thinking that about the video card but figured anything that actually taxed the video card would be held back by the CPU anyway so wasn’t sure if it was worth it or not.

Thanks for the info!

it depends what you use it for.  If you watch DVD, do a little of photo editing.  All that will help.  2 Gb memory will help tremendously too.

Be aware this laptop uses mono speaker.

If you back out in to the small business section and select the 1310, you can choose the model with a c2d in it. its about $100 more than this one and well worth it imo.

Hi reactor, tried your suggestion but it came out to 699 for me (core 2 duo and 2 gig ram).
