First of all, DTS HD and TrueHD are not up and coming HD sound formats, they are current and have been established for some time now.

Second, according to the stats on futureshop’s site:

Dolby TrueHD— No
DTS HD— No

http://www.sonystyle.ca/commerce/servlet/ProductDetailDisplay?storeId=10001&catalogId=10001&langId=-1&productId=1005040

According to SonyStyle.ca’s description of this model:

Decoding Formats

DTS HD / Dolby TrueHD / Dolby Digital +
LPCM (2CH / 5.1CH / 7.1CH) through HDMI
Dolby Digital / DTS
Dolby Digital EX
DTS-ES (MATRIX 6.1 / DISCRETE 6.1)
DTS 96/24
DTS NEO:6
Dolby Prologic
Dolby Prologic II, Dolby Prologic IIx
Dolby Dual Mono
96k / 24Bit PCM
Neural -THX Surround: 225, 227 only

And I updated the story to remove the up and coming bit as you’ve suggested.

Well look at that, I obviously didn’t check on Sony’s site—my mistake.

That’s not a bad deal for something that has four HDMI inputs and decodes HD audio.  As long the other features are what somebody is looking for ... and if sounds ok!

I think I’ll get the Take-5s, they’re highly regarded small speakers, and even though they are too small for my room, I don’t want to try to fit large speakers in here (I was considering Magnepans but that would talk me into an expensive amp and it next thing you know I’ll be spending a lot more than I need to). It would be nice if they were available in a colour other than tacky black.

I’m going to buy today, but of course will have a return period. Any recommendations for an amp, ideally from Future Shop or BestBuy? I was thinking the Denon AVR-789. Though I normally hate gimmicky features, the Audyssey feature actually sounds useful for moderate volume listening, and I believe (?) Denon would have better sound than a comparably priced Sony or Yamaha. I could probably be happy with the 589, but am a sucker for extra features (upscaling 1080p, which my TV, a 52XV540U, could probably do a better job of but at least it’ll all be on one remote, and the extra decoding features, though my media is almost entirely computer based) when the incremental cost isn’t too high.

Yes, some items on the Days Of Deals are real steals. In those cases (and because the prices are valid for just 24 hrs) it’s sometimes best to just go ahead and buy it, then do research at home to decide if it’s what you need, and if it’s a good deal. If it is, open the package and keep it. If not, you can return it. This tactic just affords you up to 30 days to do research, while “locking” in the low price. But do everyone a favour, and try to not open the package unless you really need to test the item; open box items cost the stores, and us consumers.

Routs

Wrong price for the HT system.  Should be $499, not $199.
