What?  Where’s the love for the homeschoolers and stay-at-home moms?

Derfel

When you have to deal with a full-out class of 35 kids 4 times a day, then you get your free coffee once a week. smile

35 kids, where do you live?

Class sizes are capped at 20 here AND most of the time JK, K, 1 and 2 get a assistant as well.

Maybe the teachers will threaten to go on strike because they aren’t being given free VENTIs!!

Economy is in recession and teacher’s still want more and more.. typical union “out of touch with reality” mentality.

Those of you with 1 - 3 kids - think about having 20 more at the same time. Tough job, important job. I know, I do it.

Most do not have TAs, and not all areas are capped at 20. BTW - any free joe for east coast teachers?

Posted September 8, 2008 @ 10:54am

jonnyyaa

PS - moms deserve free joe too!! (maybe 2)

Remember teachers have families to support too!

Great idea ... assume everyone feeling sorry for teachers who actually have to go back to work ... look for line-ups at SBs at 3:15.

The Parry Sound location is not honoring the deal, instead only giving a discount.  So tomorrow enroute to school we are going to take the press release and show it to them.

Just add the free Starbucks coffee to yet another great benefit teachers get…

-good working environment
-good salary
-respected profession
-paid vacation
-8 weeks off in the summer
-2 weeks off in December
-1 week off in March
-a guaranteed retirement plan managed by some of the country’s top financial minds
-medical benefits
-a powerful lobby group (the union) looking out for its members

Hothummer,

Why wouldn’t you choose to be a teacher?  Oh I see, you must have chosen a profession that doesn’t get these kinds of benefits and have instead chosen to complain about your profession choices.  If you want a free coffee so bad, go and become a teacher.

Thanks Starbucks for the free coffee.

I teach high school, so 35 kids in a classroom (times 4 times a day, so 140+ students each day to keep track of and mark work for) is certainly a good reason to get a $2 coffee once a week.

A free coffee is just a small token for all the work we do!  Those that aren’t teachers shouldn’t really try to speculate what it’s like to be one or what our unions do for us!  If you think we have it easy, go back to university and give our profession a go.
I dare you!

Too bad I’m a Timmy’s fan!

Try being a single parent who quit her job to become a teacher two years ago and has yet to find full time teaching work except the odd supply teaching job! Certainly not enough to pay the bills...so what perks are there for occasional teachers like me?  Not many!  I will gladly take a free coffee for having my Ontario’s Teacher Certificate.  Mind you at a cost of $7000 that’s one expensive cup of java, nonetheless, thank you Starbucks! If I could I would deliver one to all the stay at home moms...I did that too, and trust me your job is just as important as those of the teachers! Let’s cheers to that together!

Hmmm, what about homeschooling families? I’m going to respectfully ask (sans “teacher ID”, of course) at our local (Ajax, ON) location. Both my wife and I have been teaching our own 2 kids for 7 years. We deserve coffee.

wow...am I ever naive to think that people appreciated the job I do rather than whine and complain about their displaced misery…

to use someone else’s words to sum it up:

“Just add the free Starbucks coffee to yet another great benefit teachers get…

-good working environment---- Depending on who you work for (as with most jobs)
-good salary==== absolutely! (my union fought for me)
-respected profession=== apparently not after reading some of these replies
-paid vacation=== I’m actually only employed from Sept-June.... during that time I get three weeks like many other professions
-8 weeks off in the summer=== see above, added to which many of us take courses, spend most of August getting ready for other peoples kids to have a safe and happy place to go to, and getting prepared for them to have a great learning experience,... add several courses to that too
-2 weeks off in December=== see two above
-1 week off in March=== see three above
(hmm… sounds like a lot of the same thing of course,.. where’s the acknowledgment for the endless hours of marking, and writing report cards, and parent teacher interviews, and preparing and scrapping plans and preparing again and coaching and homework clubbing and missing time with my family to be with other peoples?)
-a guaranteed retirement plan managed by some of the country’s top financial minds--- assuming it doesn’t get pissed away.... ps: we pay HEAVILY into our retirement fund and we just have had that contribution hiked because some of the markets stocks tanked… any big crash and the rest can go too
-medical benefits=== yep! (of course we only get six weeks of maternity.. funny eh!)
-a powerful lobby group (the union) looking out for its members=== most of the time

Again.. to paraphrase someone else… we got the easy job? Well, join us and then tell us how you feel!

I have a great job I love!

Thanks Starbucks!  (Too bad I’m a timmie’s drinker too rasberry lol)

I like the good teachers.  I don’t like the bad teachers.  Hopefully the Starbucks coffee will attack the bad teacher genes and make them better.

Posted September 11, 2008 @ 1:34pm

greedymuch?

Why don’t we all stop complaining who’s getting what and who deserves something more than the next person and just be happy with what you’ve got!  how greedy, selfish, desperate and ignorant are you?  you made the choice to either become a teacher or not or to homeschool or not or to have kids and a family and other obligations or not.  if you are that picky and irritated on who gets a free coffee or not, YOU CAN HAVE MINE!  obviously you need it more than i do…

signed - a teacher who pays for her coffee and looks for perks AT her job not BECAUSE of it.

I too am a High School teacher - anyone want to try 22 kids in a wood-shop? Send me your contact info and you can try teaching 22 kids how to use a table or a band saw!

So if someone offers me a free coffee - I may take it! I don’t get employee discounts, perks etc like many of you do in other professions - so stop your whining - and give teaching a shot if you think it’s that easy..

Cops get free food and coffee from numerous stores and restaurants, why aren’t you complaining about that??

Posted September 14, 2008 @ 11:36am

Homeschooling = parenting with textbooks.

If the teachers accept the new contract proposal they will earn $95,000 per year

I would sooner see them give free coffee to all the vagrants who do not have jobs

Posted September 14, 2008 @ 8:44pm

njilly

why? I earned my coffee…

ps: contracts are offered by the board, not the ministry and not all boards have an offer on the table; also the top rate was $94,000. (which isn’t reflective of every board, as each board finalizes the specifics with their bargaining unit.)

Why are ppl so peeved?! First of all this is JUST a free coffee. Second, if you wanted to be a teacher, just go back to school.  I would never diminish what another person does, why diminish us?

Posted September 15, 2008 @ 4:11pm

It is too bad that teachers could not swap jobs with those who work in the real world.

I wonder how opinions would change on both sides

Posted September 17, 2008 @ 9:07am

Derfel

I do work in the “real world”.

Posted September 17, 2008 @ 5:04pm

discount diva

Our job as a teacher couldn’t be any more “real”.  Come volunteer in a classroom someday and see how real it gets.
By the way, we’re not just teachers, we also get to be a guidance counsellor, nurse, social worker, parent, and coach to all the students in the school.  Now that’s real!

Posted September 17, 2008 @ 7:52pm

billrush

Sorry been there done that.  So I do know what I am talking about.

You have my sympathy not because of your chosen profession but because of what the world has done to the students

Teachers have it easy, and its getting easier every year. Give the free coffee to somebody who deserves it and stop complaining how tough your life is.

Posted September 28, 2008 @ 1:40pm

discount diva

I don’t hear any teachers complaining about how tough our jobs are blackhatt, it’s just you wonderful folks who work in the real world that keep complaining about us!

Why don’t you leave us alone and go pick on some other profession!  I feel like I’m talking to my students about bullying!  Can we all just grow up and accept other people for who they are, and be comfortable with who you are!!!

I’m back in school (at McMaster) to finish my degree so I can go to Teacher’s College and become a High School teacher.  I too can see the many benefits of being a teacher.  Instead of letting my jealousy turn into resentment towards teachers (like many of you here), I’ve decided to actually do something about it.  I’m jealous of what teachers have so I’m going to make sure I become a teacher!

I’d say the bitter people should do the same, but I think their misguided anger would hold them back from becoming good teachers.

I really enjoyed my free coffee every Monday morning this month. I tend to hit a Starbucks twice a week as it is, but this made it just that much nicer. Good job SB!
