Free Web-Based Multiplayer Shooter Game Battlefield Heroes has Launched
Looking for an inexpensive game to play? How about a free one? DICE, the developer of popular titles like Battlefield 1942 and Battlefield 2142, has launched their free, web-based multiplayer FPS game Battlefield Heroes. The game is free to play, although it does work on the microtransaction model -- if you want, you can purchase in-game items and bonuses.
The game has a cartoony look not that unlike Team Fortress 2. The gameplay is closer to that of the Battlefield titles though, with some zany twists like the ability to ride on the wings of planes and such. It's free, so why not check it out?

The hardware requirements state that Windows XP or Vista are needed. This is not what web based means, and this isn’t web-based at all. It’s just native Windows freeware deployed in a very convoluted way.

Also they have some VERY ugly microtransactions, if you pay money you can level up your character faster also you can RENT yes RENT a gun for a DAY or MONTH at a time, so you never really permanently progress.
All that being said you can still have fun with it. Quake online is still 100% free last time I checked.

The renting of guns is not done with money it is done with in game experience points. after 2-3 rounds with no upgrades you have enough to buy a gun for a week… play with that gun for a week and you have enough for a month… its not as bad as you make it seem. I was part of the beta, the real money was yes for upgrades but mainly for clothes and actions, stuff for fun.

You can play this game just fine without paying a dime. Money can score you some outfits or xp boost stuff, but its not necessary.

Does it still have good gameplay, even for non-payers?

gameplay is almost the same, you might get frustrated being gun downed by people who bought superior weapons and skills.
also there’s a bit of lag and not that many servers, hopefully they’ll fix that later.
