Cheap Dave

Used this last year for the first time and thought it was great and the freeness of it makes it a little bit greater.

Download @ studiotax.com instead of studiotax.ca

I used it last year. Easy to use and accurate. Unless it has changed, you can use it for investments and for self employed income.

Used this last year with NETFILE and for a printed return the year before. Worked good, some quirks, but for free, it’s hard to beat. Last time, I also used a pre-certified version, then installed the certified one once it was ready, and everything was fine.

did try this pre-certified version for the first time ever this morning and found a couple significant bugs that i reported to studiotax.com… just an fyi to not rely on this data if the certified version will have fixes as reported.

sharonakrey: what bugs have you found?  Just curious before i start relying on this.  Did a very simple return, and didn’t find any bugs…

paranoi7:  my issue was regarding home buyers plan repayment and the software erroneously adding some extra income that doesn’t exist… fyi, they responded to my email within 15 minutes…

paranoi7

did they say they are going to fix the bug in time for the certified version release?

Posted January 8, 2009 @ 11:13am

sharonakrey

i would assume that if they confirm it is a bug and not a problem between the keyboard and the monitor then yes they would fix it before releasing the certified version.

I also used it for my 2007 return and it worked out perfect. I used to use Quicktax all of the time but why bother now when this one is free and just as good.

paranoi7

When one actually use it to submit via NETFILE, is it actually free or one would have to pay for electronic submission?

Posted January 9, 2009 @ 4:10pm

torontodealseeker

paranoi7 - the netfile is sans charge, 100% free!

I used Studiotax last year (used to use TaxWiz but then Intuit (owners) decided to roll it into QUicken).  I found one problem, it was fixed in a day.  I will be using it again this year.  Recommended.

Used it for last 3 tax years. Awesome stuff.
My returns were pretty basic.

Posted January 13, 2009 @ 4:55pm

ct027

And yup, freeeeeeeeeeeeeee

scottt57

Can it read last year’s quick tax files to import data from previous years’ returns?

Posted January 13, 2009 @ 5:26pm

The product is completely free but it won’t be a bad idea to make a small donation via http://www.studiotax.com/en/payment.htm

Advil_Yum

Awesome—I’ve been using TaxWiz, but this year I’ll be trying this for certain.  Thank you RFD!!

I did the comparation of QuickTax and StudioTax last year (2007).  The balance of both files were exactly the same.  I then used StudioTax, netfiled, and received my refund within 2 weeks.
Highly recommended.

Wow, I am seeing this kind of ad for the very first time. Atleast I will save some money by not spending on my accountant. Thanks Redflag and to its members.

@scottt57: it will import last year’s StudioTax data, but to my knowledge does not read QuickTax or other formats. Other than your personal info there are only a handful of numbers you need from last year’s return.

Here is a review of last year’s version: http://www.squawkfox.com/2008/01/27/review-studiotax-2007/

Anyone ever make a donation? I hope you guys do.

Any one have issues with editing some fields?  I opened it up to modify some info, and can’t seem to do anything with name/mailing address or gifts and donations box....  Just installed the most recent version, but didn’t help.

@scottyw: maybe you’re trying to edit fields that are teh result of some other calculation.  I believe there is a form where you enter your various charitable deductions, and StudioTax totals it up for you.

@hash76: thanks for the reminder.  The pay-what-you-can model will keep them coming back unless they get $0 from everyone.

I can’t get it to add the calculation from Schedule 3 (Capital Gains).  they haven’t responded to my e-mail.  I’ll be searching for paid tax software.
