    Free Tax Software from StudioTax.ca

It's February, a lovely time of the year with cold weather and the start of tax season! Fear not, because even as tax time approaches, there are ways to save! For one thing, there's StudioTax, a long running, free Income Tax preparation program. As per CRA requirement, StudioTax 2007 has a limit of 20 returns per computer. Note that this is a pre-certified version that is missing the Netfile (the Canadian Revenue Agency certification for internet income tax submission and print functions), so you will need to download and install the certified version once it becomes available. However, now is the time to get yourself acquainted with the program and decide if it's right for you!

Has anyone every used StudioTax?  Even though they don’t offer NETFILE, can I save the file of the return, and uploaded on the gov’t’s site once NETFILE is open in a few days?  Thank you.

They DO offer Netfile - but as the description says, this is a pre-certified version. Once Revenue Canada certifies the software, an updated version of StudioTax will be released that allows Netfile.

Do your taxes and save the file. When the certified version is released, you can use it to netfile your return.

This is the situation will all tax programs every year.

BTW - I reviewed StudioTax last year and was quite impressed with it, especially since it’s free. It doesn’t handle small business or self-employment though (at least it didn’t last year).

I’ve used this software the last few years—it’s great. It’s as good as Quicktax. You’d have to be stupid or very rich—or both—to pay intuit for the privilege of filing your taxes (a tax on paying taxes)—when this is available for free.

BTW: It does do Netfile—just wait for the update closer to April.

@ Techwriter - T2124 is supported for multi cases this year.  Appears to be a max of 6.

As far as I know, it was supported last year as well (but only one).

Last year, I ended up buying GenuTax. You buy it once and they provide an update each year. I really liked it, and found it easier to use than StudioTax.

StudioTax is really good though, for people looking for a free program.

Genutax is interview process from what I understand.  Studiotax is short wizard, then you fill out the forms directly.

I think which you would prefer would differ depending on which style you prefer.

Myself, I like to fill out the return the old way.  I find it the faster and I already know what claims go where.
