October 27 Update: xpresscall.com has lowered their rates further to 2.5 cents a minute to all North American destinations. Plus you still get the 80 minutes of free calling to get you started.
Originally Updated on January 8th, 2008: The fine folks at xpresscall.com have recently reduced their long distance rates once again! You can use their system to place long distance calls from your cell, home or office phones for just 2.9 cents a minute to anywhere in Canada, USA and the UK. The rest of their international rates have also been lowered. Note that xpresscall does not use VOIP, so voice quality and connection quality are very good.
If you wish to give the service a test drive, RedFlagDeals.com has teamed up with xpresscall.com to give our readers an exclusive offer of 80 minutes of free long distance service with no strings attached. Here's what you need to do in order to get your free minutes:
- Visit this page, and sign up for 40 minutes of free long distance to anywhere in North America
- Then, receive an additional 40 minutes of free long distance in return for sending an email to support@prepaiddirect.ca stating “I found your deal at RedFlagDeals.com” in the subject line. The extra 40 minutes free will be put into your free trial account within 24 hours after the email is received.
Many, many RedFlagDeals.com readers have enjoyed this free offer in the past, so if you haven't already, be assured that it's great, legitimate offer. It's imperative that you send the email to get your additional 40 free minutes, but this will work, and there are no hidden fees or charges. There's no reason not to give the service a try, so enjoy the great freebie, and then move right into the hot deal on long distance with xpresscall.com's impressive rates.

Hi Folks,
Here are some answers to the most common questions we have been receiving from RFD readers via email:
> You CAN use your free minutes to place international calls. For countries such as China, Hong Kong, the U.K. and Taiwan (where our per minute charge is the same as our 4.5 cent/min. North American rate) you will receive 80 free minutes to those destinations.
> For calls to other countries, your number of free minutes will depend on our rate to the country you wish to call. For example, our rate to Australia, South Korea and the majority of countries in Europe is 4.9 cents per minute. Based on that rate, you will receive 73 minutes worth of free calls to those countries.
> All of our international per minute charges can been viewed by going to our web site, and clicking on the “Rates” icon.
> We ABSOLUTELY GUARANTEE that signing up for our Free Trial will not affect any of your existing long distance plans or telephone service agreements.
If you have any other questions, please post them here, or send an email to
Thanks!!

Profiting from the Tsunami

Peter from xpresscall

Endo,
I’m not sure what you mean by your comment. We are working with RFD to create a donation fund at no cost to its’ readers. The only organization that will be “profiting” as a result of this unique offer is in fact the Canadain Red Cross and its’ Tsunami Relief Fund.

Hello,
I just signed up. Now to e-mail.

When I meant profitting I meant it like this…
A local Boston Pizza is doing a VERY similar thing.
They are offering $1 from every large pizza purchased to the tsunami thing. That pushes people to buy the large pizza as opposed to whatever.
Given, your case is different as you offer your service for free, but you’re a business and we all very well know your not “non-profit”. If your intentions were not of profits then you would have gone ahead and given a bunch of money without connecting the two.
I’m not angry, I’m just saying that at its core, it is profitting from disaster.

eNDO

Oh, and I’m still going to try your service anyways.

I guess the Red Cross profits from disasters too as they have paid employees. Those rascals!

endo your comments are foolish. it doesn’t say anywhere that xpresscalls is a “non-profit” organization. the fact is, they are offering us all something for free as well as supporting a charitable organization. it’s positive for all involved, and i’m sure they will attract customers through this promotion if their product and service are of a high quality. nothing wrong with that.

endo, you’re an idiot. If expresscall offered exact same 80 free minutes promotion but did not give $1 to red cross I suspect you’d be much happier, wouldn’t you?

Terry,
Yes, the xpresscall system can be used for long distance calls within BC, as well as to anyhwere else in the world.

Endo, Shame on you!! You should have sobered up before you started to write anything. Sober up to the fact that Red Cross is NOT for Profit - they don’t just say it - they live it! Employees have put countless hundreds of hours into the relief fund by processing everyone’s donations. Their goal and mission is to get donations to where thet are needed most - AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE. These employees are NOT getting paid overtime - they get time in liu IF they can get the time off - some never “buy” back time, they are just too busy. You should take some time off you cushy “union” job and do some volunteer work - be a little SELFLESS and less SELF CENTRED and SELF RIGHTEOUS. I bet it was a big joke to get people’s emotions stirred. Maybe more people should donate directly or sign up for this offer just to “get in your face” - your mother WOULD NOT be proud of you!! I do not work for Red Cross but am very proud of a son that does! Tsumani or NOT, they all put the same dedidcation and passion into their work FOR CANADIANS. Cheers!

This seems to be a re-sell of Goldline.... Which isn’t a bad thing,... but I found a problem with goldline in that, in one case at least, their advertised rate was not what they were charging. What I’m referring to is the rate for calling Iran… Peter, can you please confirm your rate for calling Iran?
Also, if I’m already signed up with goldline am I still able to sign up with you guys, (the website wouldn’t allow it, it indicated that I would have to call your customer service)? both goldline and expresscall use the same local access number for Ottawa.
Thanks
|
|
Peter from xpresscall
|
ECaC,
Our charges to Iran are posted on our site, as follows; for calls to “landline” phones located in the cities listed in our rate chart, 13.9 cents per minute, or 18.9 cents/min for calls to landlines in other regions of the country. For calls to cell phones in Iran, regardless of location, the rate is 23.7 cents/min.
All of our current per minute charges are listed at http://www.xpresscall.com, and we only charge according to that rate table.
We do share some network capacity and capabilities with other resellers, but that does not impact our rates or the way we charge calls.
In some cases, (when you have taken advantage of a free long distance offer in the past from one of our sister companies), people will receive a request to call our customer service group prior to activating an xpresscall Free Trial. You can either do that, or send your phone number via email to , and we will activate your line for you.
Thank you.

Peter from xpresscall

Safflon,
If you have participated in our Free Trial program in the past, including the RFD 40 minute bonus, then you do not qualify for this offer.
If you have not sent us the “I found your deal at RFD” email in the past, then if you do so now, we’ll add the extra 40 minutes to your free trial account.
Thanks!!

I think there’s a low level of comprehension from the replies I’ve read. The interpretations of what eNDO said is very misguided. I would only say this is due to people skimming and not actually reading. One example is someone actually took sarcastic comments from other and claimed it to be words from eNDO. A well marked argument illicits thought, a poor one only shames its writer.
It’s a marketing campaign, which the company ultimately hopes to gain profit from. I believe that is the message.
Now for a legitimate question. Does the offer apply for cell phones? I know there is usually a surcharge by some companies for this.
|
|
James
|
Mito:
The offer does apply to cell phones. There is not extra charge for cell phones. Most cell phone companies charge between 20 to 25 cents a minute for North American calls. We bring that charge down to 4.5 cents a minute.
Further to your comments regarding the relief fund. This is a win win for everybody. People are getting ALOT of free time and we are donating a generous donation to the relief fund. We are not asking RFD customers for any of their money for the donation. Thanks for your interests Mito, let me know if there is anything else we can provide.

Hi, One thing to note is that they charge in 1 minute increments. The standard rate used in the industry today is 30 second minimum with 6 second increments (Fido actually does 1 sec increments after the initial 30 seconds). Place a call for 1 minute and 1 second and you are charged for two minutes. Rounding up adds a significant amount to the per minute rate - especially if you tend to make short calls (eg. getting people’s voice mail). Interestingly enough there is no mention of the billing scheme on their website. I had to get the information by calling their customer service.
|
|
"never worked in TELCOM industry - but can do math
|
Hi Ex Telcom Guy
Ok before you make a judgement on which is better billing by the second or billing by the minute you should actually do the math.
You said Fido billing by the second - according to their website they charge 10 cents per minute and if they bill by the second as you say they do we can say that a 1 / 60 of a minute (or 1 seond) costs .0166666 cents.
Lets say that You make a call that lasts 1 minute and 1 second with Fido and I do the same with Prepaid Direct at 4.5 cents per minute.
With Fido you would pay 10.1666 cents
with Prepaid I would pay 9.0 cents
Result: you would have paid more but you would have the peace of mind knowing that you were billed by the second.
and for each second we talk more that 1 minute and 1 second you pay even more with Fido but Prepaid stays the same.
So at the 1 second past the first minute mark you would pay 12.96% more by the second as compared to by the minute calling.
At 2 seconds past you pay 14.81% more and at 3 seconds you pay 16.67% more in fact the gap increases by 1.85% for each time you are billed by the second.
While due to the extremely low rate of 4.5 cents per minute with Prepaid for each additional second more I do not pay any more.
So if you do make short calls as you said to check your voicemail you would actually save money using PREPAID direct rather than Fido who bills by the second.
I just realized I have made a mistake - I forgot to incorporate into my calculations the 80 free minutes that Prepaid is giving you. That would make Prepaid an even better deal.
Additionally - there is no time limit on when you must use up the time. It doesn’t expire. You buy it and you get to use every minute of it.
Oh I forgot another thing, along with paying less money for your longdistance - Prepaid is donating money to Red Cross to help the Tsunami victims for each trial that is activated.
So what else can you tell us about the telcom business ... EX telcom guy
|
|
ExTelecom Guy
|
Dear Never worked in TELCOM,
You’re missing the point entirely. I said, “rounding up adds a significant amount to the per minute rate”. Your examples clearly show this.
I never said Fido was a better deal. My comment about Fido was to show that, while the industry standard is ‘30 & 6’, some providers go even further in billing for actual time used.
I appreciate that xpresscall.com is offering 80 minutes of long distance for free and that they are donating money to charity, but let’s not forget they are doing this in an effort to get new customers.
My initial comments were meant to inform readers that when shopping for long distance rates it is a good idea to compare billing methods as the price varies significantly depending on the method used.
|
|
"never worked in TELCOM industry - but can do math
|
Dear EX Telecom Guy
What my example clearly shows is that you missed the point.
Even with “rounding up” it is cheaper and as a consumer what I care about is how much I have to pay. Or would you rather pay more to be billed by the second?
Anwer that question?
What you were implying is that by charging the minute Prepaid was somehow pulling one over on the public. When the truth is they are offering an extremely low rate, with no minimums, no expirey time with basically a very simple approach that more companies should be doing.
Many of the pay by the minute telcoms have minimums per call or you have to use the time up within a time frame or you would loose your minutes. These activities raise the per minute price.
I haven’t forgotted they are offering incentives to gain new customers - and why not. They are in business to making money. I am sure you expect to be paid for the services you provide.
So why not offer incentives?
And if in offering an incentive they help people who have had their lives totally wiped out by a tidal wave then good for them. Would you rather not have money donated to these poor suffering people.
What you should be trying to tell the consumer is to get the best deal they can. Do the math - the bottom line is at the end of the month after using the time given to me I am paying less for long distance when I use Xpresscall than I would be if I use some of the pay by minute companies as you suggested.

Given:
Two telephone companies offer long distance at 4.5 cents per minute.
Company A charges a 1 minute minimum and thereafter in 1 minute increments.
Company B charges a 30 second minimum and thereafter in 6 second increments.
Question:
Which company has the best rate?
Answer:
Company B always has the best rate unless the duration of the call (in minutes) is a whole number in which case both companies charge the same.
Time your phone calls and you will see that the duration is rarely in whole minutes.
Be aware of different billing methods when shopping for a new long-distance provider as the effective rate will vary depending on the billing method used.
There are many providers out there so shop around and ask questions.
|
|
Never worked in TECCOM industry - but can do the m
|
Ok - obviously you either can’t do math or can’t read.
In my first example I game you concrete numbers given two companys. One company that you brought up by the way.
One charging 10 a minute and billing in second intervals and I compared it to Prepaid billing in 1 minute intervals and if you bother to go back and read it you will see that it is cheaper to go with the dreaded bill by the minute company.
You have to look at the rate blindly thinking it is cheaper because the billing is done by the second is well just plane stupid.
Find me the other company you are refering too. You are saying if the two comanies have the same rate, well find me the other company. Then we will talk.
No point talking in generality to save face bring me some hard facts or dont bother making another comment.

Peter/James,
I tried sigining up for your service on fri nite Mar 25 to take part in the RFD deal and was asked to call CS. I never got to speak to them since i was on hold but did send them an email. On fri, my acct had a balance of 0.04 cents. Today it is invalid account. I did not make any calls since i was waiting to hear back from CS.
Secondly, your access # and Justdial.ca seems to be the same. I was searching for good rates overseas and noticed this. Also, both rates seem to be the same. However, Justdial includes taxes in the rate/min. Is xpress call the same?
Thanks

No Deal....Billed for the Call By Bell Canada
|

Peter from xpresscall
|
Michelle,
No offense, but if this really wasn’t a deal, do you really think you would be the first person who posted a message in here? We have had literally thousands of RFD readers take advantage of our offer, which really is free, with no strings attached…
In addition, we have several thousand customers that use our system every day, to save money on their long distance calls compared to the phone companies…
Could you please send an email to , and we will explain the correct dialing instructions to you.
If you are dialing the correct xpresscall Local Access Number, the telephone company CANNOT bill you for those calls...it is impossible for them to do so…
We look forward to hearing from you.

Reply for eNDO’s message: Profiting from the Tsunami
As Just Dial Group, We have donated of our sales to Tsunami relief without trying to sell any minutes or trying to promote our services like other telecom companies stated in this forum.
Cheers
|

Derek
|
Just Dial Group: We actually just checked out your website and saw no mention of any such donation to substantiate the claim. And furthermore, as a competitor you obviously have a bias against this offer that supports Tsunami relief and gives users 80 LD minutes at your competitor. And are you not in essence promoting your services and trying to sell minutes with that very comment?
At the end of the day, this is a win-win situation for everyone. In addition to getting the 80 free minutes of LD, you were also supporting Tsunami relief, and we’re proud to be able to present our users with such a value-packed exclusive offer.
|
|
Just Dial Group
|
Derek, Just Dial Group will never post donation certificates on their web page. Because Just Dial Group is not a sponsor(!) of any disaster.
Thank you for informing us about your company’s “such a value-packed exclusive offer” once again.

Confused
|
So how does this exactly work? I’m suppose to get 80 min free, but it’s 4.5/min at the same time? What?
|
|
Peter from xpresscall
|
Confused,
Our rate has actually been reduced to 3.9 cents per minute for calls to North American destinations. Using that rate, I’ll explain how our free trial works.
1) When you go to our site and activate your first 40 minutes free, we actually “deposit” $1.60 into an xpresscall account for you.
2) After you send us the “I found your deal at RFD” email, we then add another $1.60 to your account.
3) At our rate of 3.9 cents/min, you then have access to 80 free minutes of long distance calling time to Canada and the USA.
You can also use your account balance to call international destinations, but the number of free minutes will vary, depending on our rate to the country you wish to call.
For example, if you wish to call one of the many countries to which our rate is 4.4 cents/min (China, Hong Kong, Australia or most European countries) you have 72 free minutes available.
Hope this makes sense, and that you can now change your RFD nick!!
If you have any other questions, post them here, or send them to
.
Thanks,
|

Hello Ben,
You can use the xpresscall system to place calls from any “non-activated” phone in Canada or the US to anywhere in the world.
To get your PIN, please send us an email from the address that you have registered with your account.
For security purposes, we do require that you use the xpresscall syste (from your activated phone line) to place at least one long distance call prior to obtaining your PIN.
Let us know if you have any more questions by posting them here, or sending them to

Your offer of free 80 minutes is appreciable. Two questions:
1. Do these 80 minutes expire after a certain period of time?
2. What are your current rates per minute to England, India, Netherlands and Phillipines.
Thanks
|
|
Peter from xpresscall
|
Rana,
Your xpresscall minutes never expire, whether they are free or purchased.
All of our per minute charges can be seen by going to xpresscall.com, and clicking on the “Rates” icon, but here are the figures you are looking for. (All of the rates listed below are for calls to “landline” phones only.)
England - 3.99 cents/min
Netherlands - 4.49 cents/min
India - as low as 13.1 cents/min, but rates vary by area. All rates are listed in our site.
Philippines - 26 cents/min
I hope this helps, and please contact us if you have any more questions.

Peter from xpresscall

HotDealsRock,
You should have a balance of at least $3.20 in your account after we have added the RFD bonus.
I’m not sure when you sent us the RFD email, but the bonuses are normally done within 24 hours of the receipt of your email.
Please also be advised that only the RFD bonus appears on your online account profile. The first 40 minutes does not appear, as anybody who goes to our site can receive that offer.
By calling your xpresscall access number, you should hear that you have $3.20 in your account.
If that is not the case, please re-send your RFD email, and accept our sincere apologies for this oversight.

I just like to give xpresscall 2 big thumbs up.
I used there service to make a few phonecalls within Canada and worked great.
Yesterday, I phoned The Netherlands and although there little echo in the line,it seems to work fine (this echo happened with Telus also ones in a while).
The service from Epresscall is one of the best.
I did subcribe to them and received an extra 50 minutes to my account.
Great stuff guy’s keep and up the good work

I didn’t see this question posted so here it goes:
regardless of where i call, after i use up my free LD minutes (based on the rate), what happens to the call? does it
a) keep going at which point I will get billed for the minutes used above the free minutes
b) automatically get discounted, thereby preventing me from being billed.
yes i am cheap and want to make sure i don’t get billed..i just want to use up my free minutes (and not worry about watching a clock). Thanks!
|
|
Peter from xpresscall
|
Mr. Disco,
There is no way for us to bill you for your long distane calls after you have used up all of your free minutes.
When you are on a call, and your xpresscall mintes are about to be depleted, you will hear a warning tone when you have 3 minutes remaining in your account. That will ensure you have time to terminate the call properly, and not just get disconnected.
Being cheap is OK...that’s what our service is all about!!
Good luck with your free trial.

Ok I just signed up and while I wait I was reading the instructions. I’m confused on the procedure.
Scenario - I want to place a call to New Zealand-Auckland using my free 80min and using the primary # I registered.
Steps:
1. Dial the local access number
Question: On the webpage for Access Numbers I should pick the link that says Canada and USA and dial the Toronto # 416-642-8023
2. I dial 011649+phone number (I assume the country codes listed on the Rates page is really the Country Code+City Code combined).
Is that it?
|
|
Peter from xpresscall
|
Mr Disco,
Assuming that you are located in Toronto, you first dial the xpresscall Access Number for activated phones, which is 416-642-8023.
As soon as the system answers, you can then dial 011 + Country Code + City Code + Telephone Number.
Our rate to New Zealand is just 4.99 cents per minute, so our RFD free trial will give you just over 60 minutes of calling time to Aukland.
Good luck with your free trial.

Ok I’ve signed up, sent the email for the extra 40min rfd special yet my account only shows $1.60 (instead of $3.20). I’ve emailed support twice without a response. Help?

Mr Disco,
I’m not sure who you emailed, as we are normally very prompt in returning our customers’ inquiries.
If you call our access number, you will hear a message stating that you have $3.20 in your account.
The first 40 free minutes you receive by activating your phone lines does not appear in your online statement, as that offer is made to everyone. The $1.60 you see in your free trial account represents your RFD bonus.
Please call the access number to confirm, and in the future send all inquiries to or post them here.
Good luck with your free trial.

RFD Readers,
We have had a few people contact us directly with the same question, so it make sense to post a message here.
You CAN use the free minutes you receive via our RFD promo to make calls to international destinations.
The number of free minutes you will be able to use depends on our rate to the country you wish to call. Just take that rate, and divide it into the $3.20 you will have in your free trial account after sending us the RFD email.
For example, since our rate to China and Hong Kong is 4.49 cents per min., you will be able to place just over 70 minutes of free calls to those countries.
Hope this helps, and good luck with your free trials!!

I signed up in Thornhill...the Toronto access number doesn’t work and neither does the 1-800 number. Which access number should I be using?
|
|
Peter from xpresscall
|
Winegums,
Thousands of call are processed through our 416-642-8023 access number in Toronto every day, so I’m not sure what the problem is here.
Please send an email directly to , and we will confirm that your free trial account has been set up properly.
We look forward to hearing from you.

so...now wut, i singd up for the minutes but closed the window...plz tell me how to activate my account and how do i call a city in russia?

Peter from xpresscall
|
russiajewels,
After you send us the “I found your deal at RFD” email, we’ll send you a short note that contains instructions about how to use our xpresscall service.
Using the system is easy. Just call our access number (which we will send you), and then as soon as the system answers, you can dial the long distance number you wish to call.
You can call Russia with your free minutes. If you are planning to call Moscow or St. Petersburg, our rate is just 3.3 cents/min, meaning you will also be able to place 80 minutes of calls to those destinations.
Calls to other locations in Russia are 8 cents/min, meaning that your free trial will give you 35 minutes of calling time.
Good luck with your free trial, and please let us know if you have any other questions.

This was a very bad experience for me, I tried signing up online, it told me i had to call the customer service which I did, waited 10 mins, spoke to a lady who couldnt understand anything i was saying, She kept telling me I already have an account with xpresscall, which I dont. She kept puting me on hold and coming back after 10 mins saying “you already have an account” after 25 minutes of this, I told her forget it and hung up. A very bad expercience just to get a few dollars free long distance calling.
I would avoid this and buy a 5 dollar calling card from 7-11.

rocking23nf,
There is no acceptable excuse for poor customer service, so we will not attempt to make one here, but we do sincerely apologize for the experience you had with us.
You may have activated your number with one of our sister companies in a similar promotion at some point in the past. That is why it needs to be “cleared” in our system prior to activating this promotion.
Please email the phone number you would like to activate directly to me, and I will activate it and provide you with some extra free time, in addition to your RFD bonus minutes. You can send your number to
Again I apologize, and look forward to being able to change your opinion about our offer and our customer service.

Hi Peter,
I signed up for this offer for my cell but it never worked and i have never signed up before. Is it because my SIN card is from fido? I don’t have a cell phone plan and I usually use prepaid cards from fido. Please help me fix this!
Thanks

I tried to sign up for this and was directed to phone customer service. They told me I was not eligible for this deal as I already had an account with them through “City Link”. I do not recall ever signing up with them through “City Link”, in fact my long distance company is 3web. I was told at one time I probably used a prepaid phone card and that was why I was not eligible.

Peter: How do you know if you have the full 80 min. I phone my activated no. from Hamilton and the operator says I have $1.34 talk time which is 40 min. at 3.3cents a minutes.
Thanks for your time.
|
|
Peter from xpresscall
|
Hello dontoyou,
The $1.34 is the initial balance that all of our free trial users receive when they activate their phones. After we add the RFD bonus to your account, you should have a balance of $2.80. If that is not the case, please send your phone number to and we’ll make sure that you receive the full 80 minutes free right away.
Thanks again.

CAUTION: I signed up and got a message to call Customer Service and they told me “no deal” because according to their system I have already signed up for LD with another company back in Jan/2006. I never did, but they say I did and so it’s “Sorry. No deal!” They can’t (won’t?) tell me who the other company is supposed to be and it was frustrating to be told I have to call that other company to cancel before I can have this deal, and for me to ask “who is this other company?”—along with ever-useless examples.
I mean, does this mean that if company A says that this block of cel #s is mine they “own” you? It’s my Cel #. How come they won’t listen to me when I say *I* get to choose who I do business with.
