Cancelling my Xbox live subscription back in the day was the biggest pain in the ass ever. Couldn’t do it online, it took half an hour on the phone to a call centre to eventually have some guy repeatedly ask me “why??” and then yell at me before finally cancelling my account along with the remaining 4 months that I still had left. It’s absolutely insane that you can’t just cancel the account through the Xbox or the web. I don’t know if things have changed, but MS will never get my credit card information ever again.

Microsoft charges you without telling you. After my friend’s 12 months expired, we has surprised to find out that he had another year left. Microsoft automatically renews and charges your credit card until you cancel. lol

Hmm, $8.99/month?  I thought you could usually get the gold membership in 12 (or 13) month increments for $59.99 from amazon.ca and such.  Unless my math is bad that works out to under $5/month that way.

Sounds like a lot of hassle to save $4.

$8.99 is the automatic monthly billing rate. After your 30 days you can of course just sign up for the annual $59.99 membership.

This is basically an easy $1, 1 month trial for Xbox Live Gold. That’s worth it, but if you want to continue you should definitely look for a deal on an annual subscription.
