    $17.50 Fido Plan w/Unlimited Weekends+Evenings (5PM), Unlimited Incoming Text, 200 Weekday Minutes

October 1 Update: This offer has been extended until November 3, 2008. At the same time, Fido customers can now save 5-15% when bundling with Rogers services. See Fido.ca/bundles for details.

Originally Posted August 28: Fido has launched a very good introductory plan on a 3 year agreement. The offer can be viewed on Fido.ca. The plan, for $17.50 a month on a 3 year contract, includes:
    • Unlimited weekends and evenings from 5PM
    • Unlimited incoming text messages
    • 200 weekday minutes
    • Per-second Billing
As is quite standard with phone plans, the $17.50 does not include a $6.95 monthly system access fee or the 50 cent 911 emergency access fee. Considering that it is a publicly available plan, $17.50 for unlimited weekends from after 5PM and per-second billing is very good. This offer is good until October 31, 2008 in the provinces of British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatechewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, and Nova Scotia.

Sweet Deal

This is the best plan I have ever seen with Fido wink

However, I just signed up a 3-year plan with Rogers that has unlimited weekends, 200 weekday minutes, 1000 incoming text messages, per-second billing, call display, and call answer for $18. (This plan is not available for everyone though)

Both plans are very competitive.

Why don’t you list it as a 25$ plan instead? Don’t fall into their crappy marketing campaigns. I think it should be illegal to advertise a phone plan without including all fees.

how crappy is this??  i don’t recall i’ve seen other providers list all fees..

i signed up for this plan when it wasn’t available to the public..with the value pack and everything...it comes out to around $50 a month...it’s not bad at all!

Is there a Rogers plan that is equivalent?  I’d like to pair this plan with a Blackberry Bold and the $30/6GB.

Hey, Sweet Deal
Can you please tell me how you obtained such a good deal with Rogers? I am interested in buying a cell phone with monthly cost of around $20…
Thanks!

Wow.. sickening. “Unlimited Incoming Text”. That’s like saying “Free seatbelts with car purchase!”

At least fido does have per second billing. It’s sick that all the other providers start with something ‘great’ transitioning to digital (ie: per second billing, unlimited incoming text: which should be included anyways), and slowly start charging us more and more for less and less claiming there is an extra demand on the infrastructure (being too lazy to upgrade). They give you less included features, still charging the same, and charge more to upgrade. It’s sick how the operators work up here..

pgordash

Does anyone know if this include the “expanded network” or is that extra?

Posted August 29, 2008 @ 3:06pm

mit006

This has no features on the plan!
Add $11 for the lowest value pack to get CID, VM, some outgoing texts.

You’re looking at $17.50 + 11 + 6.95 + 0.50
= $35.95 + tax
= roughly $40.62 in Ontario.

and for those of you that have managed to get recurring credits for some of your features on other plans, they are not allowed to give any credits of that kind on this plan.

and yes, only 36 month term for this plan.

my advice: be informed! (before you jump on a “deal")

yusof333

This is a crappy plan!!! 200 minutes/month for all your callings (incoming or outgoing) from 8AM-4:59:59PM??? I want to puke now…

Posted August 30, 2008 @ 1:23pm

lorax1284

If it doesn’t include call display / voicemail, VirginMobile’s “Large” prepaid plan with 200 minutes (by the minute, not by the second) is still a better value for small-time users like me. If it includes VM & CD, it would be 200 mins PLUS unlimited 5PM evenings and weekends… that would be worth switching for…

but it doesn’t…

so it’s not.

and +1 to piranhaa: right on with the way the telecom companies get a way with price creep even when THEIR costs are stable or going down.

Sweet Deal

Hey «make a difference», the plan I mentioned is for Federal Government Employees.  Are you one (or a friend / family) of those and live in Ottawa?  If so, you can look into your union deal and find that.

Thanks <<Sweet Deal>> for the reply, no I do not have anyone in my family/friends who works for federal government. :(

I agree with zorxd

call this a $25 plan
- the minimum you get ripped off for by our monopolistic cell phone industry.

With Fido, what happens with unused minutes?  Do they get carried into the next month (like prepaid) or do you lose them?

Posted September 6, 2008 @ 11:17am

nivek12

My contract links for the next 16 months with fido.
I would like to know if i can change my plan to this one.  I know i will probably have to extend my contract but this is not a problem.

Hi <<Sweet Deal >>, I work for the federal government.  When I called up rogers, they dont know about this plan.  They are asking for a price plan number.  Do you happen to know what it is.  Thanks for you help!! smile

Rogers doesnt do “per second” billing on any of its plans; corporate or not

trini_gyalie

just to let everyone know....

“does not include a $6.95 monthly system access fee or the 50 cent 911 emergency access fee.”

this is false.

Everyone knows about the extra $7.50, so can we stop whining about it ?  I bet ppl would find a way to complain if they got free cell service.  Fact is, the rates are coming down (albeit slowly), and this deal will save many people money.

Now that I said not to complain, here’s my complaint.  The dealbreaker is the 3-year contact.  If they want me for 3 years, they should throw a nice perk too (like voicemail / caller id pkg for $5 or something).  And hopefully a free phone too.

Posted October 1, 2008 @ 1:28pm

davidm

wadexyz, not everyone knows what it is - a trick designed to appear like some sort of government fee, but totally fabricated by the carriers. People /should/ keep complaining until this practise is dissolved and plans made as simple as possible.

retrothing

7-Eleven’s SpeakOut Wireless is a much better deal for me. I got my phone and 500 minutes of prepaid airtime for $100 last year. You can top up minutes in denominations of $25 to $100 and they’re good for a year.

Best of all, there’s no ridiculous $6.95 access fee and I get free voicemail, number display and 3-way calling. Oh, and it operates on the Rogers network, so I get the same performance as I would by wasting $25 per month for Fido.

I use my phone mainly for texting or short calls, and I rarely exceed $10/month in total cost. The rest of you guys are getting ripped off. wink

molala

<wadexyz>...you do get to choose phones for free or at a discount when you sign up for 3 years contract.  I’ve been using this for 6 months now and it’s a really good deal besides retention plans.  The value pack is not bad for $11 a month and you get CID, VM and 125 txt msg.  It’s enough unless you use it as a business phone.

jvasiles

nice try rogers/fido with this 3-year contract.
i’ll be waiting until february when shaw, videotron, yak and a handful of other providers start offering cell phone service. better rates/packages and no contracts are coming soon.

This is really a good deal when you look at it.  On my old City Fido plan for $45 (including the system access fee), then adding on the VM, CID, Instant Reply, and a few options, my monthly invoice would be at least $68-$72.  Without caller ID (update your phone/contact list on your handset), and caller id is passe’, saves you money.  Then use the calling options on your handset to divert calls you can’t get to to your home answering machine and you’re good to go.  You can always pickup your vmail from home for free using your work number, or just look at your handset missed calls list.  At night forward your handset to your home number and you’ll not miss any calls.  This saves me about >$39 a month, and I still have per-second billing from Fido and evenings starting at 5pm and free weekends!  I only gave-up my old City Fido to save some money as I wasn’t using it as much as I used to and Fido isn’t allowing a transfer of this plan any more.  Thank you.

<<grmoro>> the new plans at fido doesn’t have unlimited call forwarding anymore, they got rid of it for new plans a while ago.  However, it’s still a good plan.  Unlimited after 5pm and weekends are really great!  Especially for people who work during the day of the week!@

smartshopper99

deal or no deal? doesn’t matter.

I had questions for Fido. I called their “customer service” number and was forced to leave a message because no one answers the line. I left messageS and then I started sending emails, asking for service. No response whatsoever.

They obviously don’t want my business. If I signed up & had a problem, how would I get help.

Any crappy “service” provider.

Can’t wait for the competitive plans to come out and then cell prices might compare to those in Europe & US. Why exactly are we paying more?? Another thing while I’m venting...Ted Rogers has enough money!! Greedy bastard.

Posted October 2, 2008 @ 4:34pm

molala

What no. did you call?  I’ve been with Fido for 5 years now and I never got the machine.

Posted October 2, 2008 @ 5:51pm

puccagirl

This deal does not include the expanded network:

“excluding calls made and received on the expanded network”

The Fido network is actually small… but isn’t a big deal if you do not leave the major cities.

Costs to include this:

* Expanded Network option: $5 per month
* Pay per use: 25¢ per minute
