For March
For example, if you are trying during March break, my guess is that it won't be available. (Although I haven't checked).
Bought my ticket to Italy from April 18-May 6. $868 taxes in (could have got it for 838 on orbitz, but I wanted the option to cancel it so booked on lufthansa).
So if you also want the stop over in Paris or Amsterdam, KLM or Air France seem to be your only choice. (KLM and Air France are actually the same airline as they merged a number of years ago). But if you don't want the stopover, there seems to be plenty of choice.
There's not a massive amount to see in Venice, but you'll be close to many other Italian cities.
Barcelona will probably have the best weather and there is a lot to see in the city, if you don't want to do more traveling. And with the high speed train, you are only a couple of hours from Madrid.
Prague is also great and you'll be reasonably close to other Eastern European cities. Weather may not be the warmest.
It's hard to go wrong with either choice, much depens on what you are looking for.
Edit: I should also add that given the holiday weekend, you should probably check on the price and availablity of hotels before booking flights.
going to prague/venice seems to be easy... but coming back on the weekend of Apr 6/7 I'm seeing these complicated 16h to 18hour routes involving multiple stop-overs!
good point regarding checking hotel availability, i should do that too.
BTW i quickly checked weather for all 3 locations in the first week of April, and Venice actually comes on top.
My guess is that a lot of other people as the same idea as you, and were able to quickly able to snatch up the best prices and times. (or maybe the prices were always higher and the flights always worse, just because people had booked these flights weeks ago)
Thanks for posting. Any comparison on Air Transat vs. Air France/KLM for going to Europe. At least Air Transat has direct flights. About $100-$150 more expensive though.
If something goes wrong, such as flights delayed/cancelled due to weather, the chances are higher that AF/KLM will handle the problem well. No guarantees obviously, but just because they are larger, with daily flights to each city and more ground staff, the chances of a major screw up are lower.
And finally, I believe you'll earn some SkyTeam miles (unless these discount flights don't collect any). But if you don't regularly fly SkyTeam airlines, the miles are close to useless.
So it's not a massive difference. The free stopover is a nice add on. And Air Transat doesn't fly to Eastern Europe, so the Prague option is nice if that interests you.
Venice isn't in Google Street View yet. Both Barcelona and Prague are in Google Street View.
There is plenty in Italy to keep you busy (for example Venice, Florence, Pisa, Rome, Naples) but if you fly in and out of Venice, Slovenia and Croatia would make interesting side trips, despite it being to cold to swim.
Really hard to go wrong in Spain, Italy or the Czech Republic. However, from experience, I suppose I'd have to warn people that Valencia, Milan and Bruno are less visit-worthy.
Lowest I can find is $904.
But if you adjust your dates, you can go to Paris without the sidetrip for $745.
Toronto to Paris: April 26
Paris to Barcelona: May 4
Barcelona to Toronto: May 6
$775 on KLM
But either way you need to provide a bit more info. Your request right now is extremely vague.
Thanks guys, I am a travel-noob. I'd rather not make a side-trip, but a stop-over is fine. I'm looking to go in the last week of April (doesn't really matter which day) and spend about 1-2 weeks there (doesn't really matter which day I get back either).
Since you seem quite flexible, I'd suggest going to the three airline websites and doing some searches.
The prices on the Air Canada and Air France websites are likely related to this sale that ends today. There's a good chance they won't be available tomorrow. The prices on the Air Transat site will likely still be be there tomorrow.
From Montreal, I HIGHLY suggest taking Air France. While they've stopped running the A380, its replacements are a combination of recently updated 747-400 and newer 777-300ER planes.
While CDG is a pain in the butt to navigate versus Schiphol, the in-flight amenities more than make up for it.
