    • Not even worth free. I can tell you a dozen stories about skates getting butchered by these guys.

    • it really varies store to store, the one i visit has improved tremendously over the past year or 2. if you are a quality skater, u MUST know what hollow u use on ur steel or they will do the default 1/2" which is more on the beginner side and doesnt have as much blade digging into the ice, thus "good" skaters calling it dull or bad.

heres a table of hollows from sharpest to dullest

      1/4"
      5/16"
      3/8"
      7/16"
      1/2"

basically the smaller the radius u use, the more the blade will dig into the ice. i find myself to be a quite above average skater and not a very big guy and i use 3/8"

so before u call it a bad sharpen make sure u know how its supposed to be sharpened

little example of the hollow and how the radius affects it

sorry i cant comment on goalie hollows, but from the few goalies i know, they only sharpen their skates once or twice a season anyways

    • Thanks for the informative post t6lock. Embarrassingly, I've been skating and playing hockey for over 30 years, of course recreational level, but I have no idea about this stuff. I heard it all the time and whenever I bring my skates into sharpening, I let them do whatever, I guess they just go by what it was before. Can the hollow really be that much, 1/2"? Seems really deep. Also, I only play 6 months, once a week, and now only sharpen my skates once a season (weird, I know) but I know other players that do the same.

Me too, heard similar about Sport Chek.

    • DONT get your skate sharpened at sport chek. I've been to numerous locations with my team assist card in the gta and they ALL suck! They made my dull skates even worse! Bunch of rookies! A 20$ skate sharpening tool does a better job! I advise you dont go to sport chek to get your skates sharpened.

    • Friends don't let friends get their skates "sharpened" at Sport Check.

Good post t6lock. You can also get some good info here: http://www.maximumedge.ca/

When the alignment of your car is off you have to fight to maintain a straight line on the highway; imagine what skating is like if the toe of your blade is leaning left and the heel is leaning right.

The dimensions provided (1/4", 5/16", etc) are radii, not depth. The large the number the shallower the curve, thus the less 'edge' to cut into the ice. Beginner = 1/2", Pro = 1/4"
