This deal has expired!
If you work out at home but don't have a lot of room for free weights or equipment, adjustable dumbbells are a popular choice. As we speak, Amazon.ca has the Bowflex Selectech 552 Adjustable Dumbbells for $389.00 with free shipping. This is the lowest price we've ever seen for these at Amazon.ca, and the free shipping makes a big difference considering the weight involved.
You get two adjustable dumbbells that can be set to weights from 5 to 52.5lbs (in increments of 2.5lbs up to 25lbs, and 5lbs afterwards. Reviews are good -- take a look at Amazon.com (US) where there are 357 customer reviews and the SelctTechs have an average rating of 4.3/5.

FYI - there are lots of fake bowflex out there, so be careful if you're planning on looking on kijiji or cl.
Powerblocks are also very good and similar price. Try them both and see what you like better

and no...its not me =P
but how do you know they are a legit seller? Have you bought this from him?
After reading many a review, I'll be going with the http://Powerblock Sport 5.5 Dumbbells 2.5-55lbs pair
The general consensus seems to be that the PB's are just more comfortable and sturdy. Additional weight is available if need be, however, unless your name is Lou Ferrigno (I'm showing my age) you can probably do without it.
Also, with adjustments in the 2.5lb range vs Selectech's 5lb range, the weight increments with PB's are also smaller which allows the option of minor adjustments as you build strength.
The Powerblock Sport 5.5 Dumbbells are available at http://http://www.treadmillfactory.c...x.php?do=click for $350 CAD. Shipping is about $22, (you can add to cart and input your postal code to find out) and considering that there are a few fairly convenient locations around in Ontario (Markham, Toronto, Mississauga, London) you could probably just pick them up to save on the shipping cost.
Fitness Depot in Pickering also sells a few models.
Great post by the way.
you should consider spending a few more bucks and get the urethane coated ones... the older models you will hear the metal clanking together all the time. One way to fix it, which I did, after reading about it online was to put duck tape on the metal plates... and since the U-50 and U-90 stage one are the same price - get the U-90, better resale value with the possibility of stage two, if you decide to sell later.

Buyers beware....
If I am to hold 100lbs above my head, I want to be sure it's the real thing.
The selectech's are around 17"s, the PB's are around 13". A significant difference when doing certain exercises. On top of that, the Bowflex's are 17" regardless of what weight you use, where as the length of the PB's are determined by the amount of weight's/plates that are required for your excercise. Big big + in my opinion.
Wow +1 for pointing that out. I had no idea about the Urethane ones. Now i'm wondering if i should get the U-50's or 90's. I like the idea of adding value with the 90's by allowing the option of expanding the weight to a potential 125lbs, but i'm a beginner. Can't see myself getting that hardcore within the near future. lol. If only the 90's had continuous 2.5 increments as well.
LOL. Indeed.

I'd be very nervous lifting the "knock-off" dumbells over my head.
I definately recommend Ironmaster. I got lucky and picked up a new set of quick-lock dunbells for $120 missing some peices, I bought the missing plates for $250 frm the factory. The guys at Ironmaster are excellent to deal with. The Super Bench + attachments look great.
Thanks!
Thanks in advance. I really do love using them, and the fact that they only take up a small amount of floor space in my small condo was absolutely paramount for my decision to buy adjustable dumbbells. I tried the Ironmaster (both the dumbbells and kettlebells), Powerblocks, and Bowflex SelectTech, and ended up selecting Bowflex and a dedicated 24kg kettlebell from Fitness Depot (all their stuff is overpriced... NEVER AGAIN will I buy from them).
Total: 401.26$
Don't forget to collect your air miles (20 miles worth).
Its only for the Sports 9.0 and the Urethane 50 but its a nice little discount for something that I haven't seen go on sale yet. I looked up some reviews on Fitness avenue as I have never heard of them and they seem legit; however, note that they charge 2.5% if you use a credit card.
They both end up being cheaper than the 5.5 at the treadmill factory and I'm pretty sure they are both capable of larger expansions IF you need them in the future.
I've been contemplating buying a set but I'm still not sure if I'd rather put the money into hex dumbbells or adjustables

I don't know to what extent the manufacturers of the fakes will go to make their product look just like the real thing. When I bought mine a few years back (from Kijiji), everything was packaged in proper boxes (with the Bowflex logo on the outside) and all instructions and documentation was in the box (again, with the proper logos). I was surprised to hear that the guy connected to the Kijiji ad posted earlier is selling fake stuff, because at first glance, they appear to be legit. The only thing that appears to be somewhat different is the colour of the base. I am fairly certain the colour of the base that I have is grey/silver, but in this photo (from the Kijiji ad), the base appears to be matching in colour (black). I don't know if this is because they changed the colour for this year's model or what.

If you have all the money and space in the world are are a dumbbell-dropper, nothing will beat a giant wall-to-wall rack of dedicated individual rubber-coated hex dumbbells. Since I'm cheap, live in a tiny space, and am careful with my stuff, I needed the compactness of an adjustable set. If I factor in the total cost of a pair of 10lbs, 15lbs, 20lbs, 25lbs, 30lbs, 35lbs, etc. all the way up to 90lbs, that will likely run me into the thousands of dollars, but I got the 1090 set for about $400.
What I don't understand from lifters is that they drop the weights. Yes, failure will make you want to jettison the dumbbells. But if you live in a condo like I do, and also care about your floors, you will not throw anything more than 10lbs. Maybe these lifters live in detached houses with spacious concrete basements where they can own a huge array of free weights and drop them to the floor.
I got the weights and the stand for $463.

Notice the crappy welds, otherwise looks the same. Works but it's a little wobbly and crooked.
Another tip though, if you need a good quality mat, I got this one at a horse farm for $50. You'd pay over $100 for one that's not as good at a fitness store.
I played around with the Bowflex and PB's quite a bit. At first it was hard wrapping my head around adjustables having used hex/prowelds for so many years, but given the cost/space, I decided on the PB's U90's
The clearance around the wrist area is wider than that of the older Sport models, and they're by far quieter.
Great purchase, no regrets. The issue with the Bowflex db's were the sheer length of them.
