    • I've always wanted a set of these. Had no idea they were so expensive! Is there any cheaper alternative for adjustable dum bells that won't break the bank?

    • don't get these plastic toys - they don't feel solid at all... if you want adjustable dumbbells - get powerblocks, it's about the same price, only draw back to those is the limited range of motion. However, it does have some other benefits - since your wrist is somewhat cuffed in, it feels more secure when you're doing press with heavier weights, etc.

FYI - there are lots of fake bowflex out there, so be careful if you're planning on looking on kijiji or cl.

I agree that they don't feel solid. However, my set has been going strong for 6yrs now, with regular use.

    • Very good price. Fakes are this price on craigs/kijiji

Powerblocks are also very good and similar price. Try them both and see what you like better

    • I remember reading that one disadvantage of Powerblocks is that due to the design, your wrists hit the side bars at times. The Bowflex doesn't have anything to hit your wrists against, so it may be easier to handle for some exercises.

Over the past 6 months or so, I have been contemplating (whilst saving) on which ones to get.
After reading many a review, I'll be going with the http://Powerblock Sport 5.5 Dumbbells 2.5-55lbs pair

The general consensus seems to be that the PB's are just more comfortable and sturdy. Additional weight is available if need be, however, unless your name is Lou Ferrigno (I'm showing my age) you can probably do without it.
Also, with adjustments in the 2.5lb range vs Selectech's 5lb range, the weight increments with PB's are also smaller which allows the option of minor adjustments as you build strength.

The Powerblock Sport 5.5 Dumbbells are available at http://http://www.treadmillfactory.c...x.php?do=click for $350 CAD. Shipping is about $22, (you can add to cart and input your postal code to find out) and considering that there are a few fairly convenient locations around in Ontario (Markham, Toronto, Mississauga, London) you could probably just pick them up to save on the shipping cost.

Fitness Depot in Pickering also sells a few models.

      Great post by the way.

      ditto..

you should consider spending a few more bucks and get the urethane coated ones... the older models you will hear the metal clanking together all the time. One way to fix it, which I did, after reading about it online was to put duck tape on the metal plates... and since the U-50 and U-90 stage one are the same price - get the U-90, better resale value with the possibility of stage two, if you decide to sell later.

I have met some guy selling a bowflex out of a truck before. I found him from kijiji. I compared the good with some photos I printed out online. Guess what? They were different. I think they were Chinese knockoffs, even though they looked very convincing.

      Buyers beware....

If I am to hold 100lbs above my head, I want to be sure it's the real thing.

    • Another thing to point out from the comparison reviews that i've been reading, is the length of the two types of dumbells.
The selectech's are around 17"s, the PB's are around 13". A significant difference when doing certain exercises. On top of that, the Bowflex's are 17" regardless of what weight you use, where as the length of the PB's are determined by the amount of weight's/plates that are required for your excercise. Big big + in my opinion. One review that i watched on Youtube, stated that at 10lbs, the width is only around 9"'s

Wow +1 for pointing that out. I had no idea about the Urethane ones. Now i'm wondering if i should get the U-50's or 90's. I like the idea of adding value with the 90's by allowing the option of expanding the weight to a potential 125lbs, but i'm a beginner. Can't see myself getting that hardcore within the near future. lol. If only the 90's had continuous 2.5 increments as well.

    • For anyone in the market for Adjustable Dumbbells, another option to consider is the Ironmaster Quick Lock adjustable dumbbells. Highly recommend looking for these on Craigslist or Kijiji. You can also buy the adjustable Kettlebell handles and use the same plates. Brand new, this set is a little pricey (especially buying from Canada) compared to the deal the OP posted but either way it's a lot of Money and there's more than price to consider when investing money in weights. They all have their own Pros/Cons and you should do your full research before deciding which option is best for you.

they're still not as convenient as PB's. They're more suit to someone that is more hardcore, that doesn't adjust the weight as often... they are definitely the sturdiest of all adj db's.

    • These have been as low as $239.99 from Amazon.COM http://lightningdrops.com/product/B001ARYU58 Yes you have to factor in extra effort to buy it from them and you have to wait until and if the price drops back to $239.99 again. All in all $349 from Amazon.CA is not bad but you can get a better deal if you're willing to wait and go through the extra effort.

This guy is not legit. These are counterfeit. I bought the Bowflex bench from him for $150. The "convenient" location is a parking lot out of the back of his car. While we were there one of the buildings tenants came out and gave him ****. I was about to leave but then I saw the bench, it looked legit, Bowflex box and manuals and all. I got home and all the welds were bad and the bench is crooked. Luckily I only bought the bench to go with my Ironmaster dumbells.
I'd be very nervous lifting the "knock-off" dumbells over my head.

I definately recommend Ironmaster. I got lucky and picked up a new set of quick-lock dunbells for $120 missing some peices, I bought the missing plates for $250 frm the factory. The guys at Ironmaster are excellent to deal with. The Super Bench + attachments look great.

    • I've tried these at the store last year and didn't like them, they are way to wide and their shape makes some exercises impossible or at least very hard to do. Glad i picked up powerblocks though, more sturdy. Yeah they are a bit expensive but having used them daily for the past year i must say they are my favorite piece of equipment I have owned.

    • Anyone have a link to a reputable guide for spotting fake Bowflex dumbbells? I bought the 1090 set last year from a local Kijiji seller (for about $400 if I recall correctly) and I just want to make sure they're authentic. The top results in Google gave me nothing in way of tips, let alone detailed picture-loaded reviews of how to spot counterfeit items.

Thanks in advance. I really do love using them, and the fact that they only take up a small amount of floor space in my small condo was absolutely paramount for my decision to buy adjustable dumbbells. I tried the Ironmaster (both the dumbbells and kettlebells), Powerblocks, and Bowflex SelectTech, and ended up selecting Bowflex and a dedicated 24kg kettlebell from Fitness Depot (all their stuff is overpriced... NEVER AGAIN will I buy from them).

Fitness Avenue has a 10% off coupon on their kijiji posts: http://toronto.kijiji.ca/c-buy-and-s...AdIdZ376113295

Its only for the Sports 9.0 and the Urethane 50 but its a nice little discount for something that I haven't seen go on sale yet. I looked up some reviews on Fitness avenue as I have never heard of them and they seem legit; however, note that they charge 2.5% if you use a credit card.

They both end up being cheaper than the 5.5 at the treadmill factory and I'm pretty sure they are both capable of larger expansions IF you need them in the future.

I've been contemplating buying a set but I'm still not sure if I'd rather put the money into hex dumbbells or adjustables

I was wondering this as well. The most obvious indication is the logo. I have seen ones that have "BOWFLEX" in a plain font where the silver and red logo is supposed to go, so for sure they are fake, along with these ones:

      http://toronto.kijiji.ca/c-buy-and-s...AdIdZ336350374

I don't know to what extent the manufacturers of the fakes will go to make their product look just like the real thing. When I bought mine a few years back (from Kijiji), everything was packaged in proper boxes (with the Bowflex logo on the outside) and all instructions and documentation was in the box (again, with the proper logos). I was surprised to hear that the guy connected to the Kijiji ad posted earlier is selling fake stuff, because at first glance, they appear to be legit. The only thing that appears to be somewhat different is the colour of the base. I am fairly certain the colour of the base that I have is grey/silver, but in this photo (from the Kijiji ad), the base appears to be matching in colour (black). I don't know if this is because they changed the colour for this year's model or what.

    • I just checked out www.bowflex.ca for the first time in about a year. It looks like the 552 set has changed colours slightly. The set I used to have, prior to me owning the 1090 set, was all black. It appears as if Bowflex updated the colour scheme to include the red area, and the dial now has white digits instead of red.

I've been contemplating buying a set but I'm still not sure if I'd rather put the money into hex dumbbells or adjustables
If you have all the money and space in the world are are a dumbbell-dropper, nothing will beat a giant wall-to-wall rack of dedicated individual rubber-coated hex dumbbells. Since I'm cheap, live in a tiny space, and am careful with my stuff, I needed the compactness of an adjustable set. If I factor in the total cost of a pair of 10lbs, 15lbs, 20lbs, 25lbs, 30lbs, 35lbs, etc. all the way up to 90lbs, that will likely run me into the thousands of dollars, but I got the 1090 set for about $400.

What I don't understand from lifters is that they drop the weights. Yes, failure will make you want to jettison the dumbbells. But if you live in a condo like I do, and also care about your floors, you will not throw anything more than 10lbs. Maybe these lifters live in detached houses with spacious concrete basements where they can own a huge array of free weights and drop them to the floor.

    • For those considering adjustable's, keep in mind the PB urethanes come with a lifetime warranty

I played around with the Bowflex and PB's quite a bit. At first it was hard wrapping my head around adjustables having used hex/prowelds for so many years, but given the cost/space, I decided on the PB's U90's

The clearance around the wrist area is wider than that of the older Sport models, and they're by far quieter.

Great purchase, no regrets. The issue with the Bowflex db's were the sheer length of them.
