Free Websites for Canadian Small Businesses from Google, Including Free .ca Address + $75 in AdWords

Free Website, Free .ca, Free $75 in AdWords
This deal has expired! This deal has expired!
GYBO.ca is a free offering from Google, Yola and a handful of other sponsors designed to help Canadian small business owners get their businesses online. It looks pretty straightforward, and when you sign up you'll get:
  • A free .ca web address for 12 months
  • A free website with templates and other resources from Yola
  • A listing on Google Maps
  • $75 credit for Google AdWords
If you already have your own domain, you can still take part in this offer.

While this offer is free, a credit card is required to register a .ca domain. This is simply to insure that the owner of the site lives in Canada and has a Canadian billing address. According to the site FAQ, you won't be automatically renewed at twelve months. It seems like an easy, low-risk way to make the jump if your business currently lacks an online presence.

Give it 24-48 hours. This is the standard amount of time for DNS changes to propagate throughout the Internet.

    • Not sure if they are auto renewing or not, but make sure you know the Terms and Conditions, the first year is free, renewals start at C$38.95.

I was going to signup for this the other day until I saw the renewal price and opted to look for another affordable place to register a domain.

    • Thanks OP. "Bought" a .ca however oddly enough I can't seem to find where Google sells .com domains either on the US or this CDN site since I'd rather buy from Google if possible.

Why do you ask for my credit card when this is free? Are you going to charge me after year 1?
The Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA) requires that to have a .ca domain registration, you or your organization resides in Canada. The full set of restrictions is quite complicated, but we found the most effective way to support these restrictions is to ensure that people claiming their free domains had a credit card with a Canadian billing address. This is all this information is being used for right now. We will never auto-renew domains without an explicit request from you.

    • They need the CC to automatically get their money when it's time to pay at the end of the year.
They say specifically they wouldn't renew the domain without your permission (need the card to make sure you do live in Canada).

    • So, with this deal, can we still use Google Apps?

I'd like to try Google Apps. and it would be awesome if this worked.

    • Seriously, no self-respecting business would use this.

I've been using Microsoft's Office Live Small Business and it's 10x better than this. Unfortunately, MS is folding their OLSB into Office365 and it will no longer be free.

      Why's it better?

I would think it's a non-issue now that Microsoft's offer is no longer offering it!

      Back to regular programming...

      Where do I start?

The fact that I'm prompted every other mouse click to sign up for the premium service is annoying. The free templates are awful. Any professional business should shy away from this. This service is a notch up from geocities and that's about it.

    • So it it C$38.95 a month after the first year or is that the cost for the second year, I wonder? I'll check it out. Maybe you don't have to use one of their templates, if you don't like their designs.

Sucky. I guess I'll go for the US version with Google for $10 and free Google apps. Anyone try that service?

    • I thought i'd try to register a site to see how it compares to the free Google apps and $10 domains that Google US offers, and there is no comparison.

The Yola (Canadian) one had numerous errors trying to register, saying "server not responding".

It doesn't really give me much confidence in their servers...

I guess I'll stick with the US one.

    • This is direct competition against the Yellow Pages ads you see on TV. I don't know what tempates they offer but I'm sure they're actually pretty good for somebody who knows nothing about computers or websites.
