    • Just note that these are thermal block machines, and many a coffee snob will thumb their nose. There are some similar priced boiler machines out there.

      Curious, how does no auto stop affect the consistency? I thought when the espresso flow stops you just shut it off.

      Unless its a fully automatic one.

      It will keep flowing until you shut it off, or it runs out of water.

      So you have full control over the concentration of your espresso. That can be both good and bad.

      You can always keep an eye on the reservoir, say 3/4 of a cup will be your desire strength. So you stop the flow when 3/4 level of water is gone. That's

      Not having auto off, you can fiddle with water level, amount of ground and make you a competent barista With more training, you can tell the starbucks barista, you suck! Step aside junior, let the pro do it.

      Sorry, but that makes no sense at all...
      If anything, it would make it more difficult if the machine started shutting itself off.
      Aim for a 2oz shot in 30 seconds using 14g of freshly ground beans tamped with ~30lbs force. If you can nail that every time, then your espresso will be consistently good.

      I hate clean up so I only use the pods now.

    • I see what you mean by auto-shut off now. You are filling the tank. We have an old Krups machine at work, when I use it I put enough water for 2 shots so when the water runs out I know its done.

    • I purchased this machine a week ago and returned it yesterday. I found the espresso tasted great but it was simply not hot enough. The only way to get it close enough to my liking was to use hot water to heat up my cups and THEN pour the espresso. Maybe this is just personal preference but I felt even then I had to drink it almost immediately or it would cool off too fast. If I wanted cappuccino I had to heat the milk up to 160 degrees or so and THEN pour the espresso (reverse of what the manual says) otherwise it was even colder. I emailed their customer service but all they said was that these machines are calibrated for those temperatures (I was getting ranges from 160 to 175 degrees for a pour).

      Like I said it tasted great but I don't want to feel forced to drink it the second I pour it. Keep that in mind if your tastes sound similar to mine.

      If anyone has a suggestion for something better at a similar price I'd love to hear it.

      160-175 degrees is actually a pretty standard "in-cup" temp for a shot, with the brew temperature being around 190-196 on almost all consumer machines. Any hotter and your espresso may extract very bitter, depending on your bean.

      It's always recommended that you preheat your cups before using them (otherwise hot espresso + cold cup = lukewarm espresso). A lot of machines have a cup warming tray for this purpose. Other things you can do are to make sure your machine warms up for a good 10-15 minutes (with the portafilter in place) before using it, and draw an empty shot to heat up the portafilter further before wiping it dry and adding in your beans to pull your shot.

      Ok yeah I did do all that too but I was hoping I could find a machine that wouldn't require so much extra "work" just to get it right. I have never really been an espresso drinker so probably my ideas of what it should come out like are off base though. I went to an espresso cafe before I returned it to see how hot they served it and it was definitely hotter (I had no thermometer to test the actual temp though) than what I was getting at home so that's what made me frustrated with my purchase.

      Now you have me second guessing myself...

    • We bought one of these for $169 last year(w/extra Cappuccino cups and Espresso beans) and it's an awesome little espresso maker.

      I'm not so thrilled by the steam wand, mine doesn't seem to build up enough pressure right away and takes a while to get the milk up to temperature.
      The Breville they often have at Costco has a screw valve to control the steam better although I don't know if it actually works any better.

      I'm not really a Cappuccino guy so this doesn't bother me, but it could be a concern for others.

    • you can use ese pods (easy serve espresso). Starbucks has them instore, RCSS sells the Illy brand, and you can find them online. I normally order from podhead or podmerchant or even better yet amazon

      As far as the espresso not being hot enough, that's bull. my guess is you're using the stainless steel cup. Get yourself a nice classic ceramic set.

      Over 3 years and this little tyke of a machine is great.

      As far as using the wand, search on youtube for a proper video on how to steam milk

      Actually I WAS using the stainless steel cup. Will it really make a big difference? I had a feeling it may be that actually... The espresso did come out hot enough it just was cold within no time which was my issue. I suspected a steel cup may conduct (ie. lose) heat faster. Is that what is happening?

      100% your problem. Get a set from homesense, they are cheap and nice. We had the same problem. BTW, i think they are actually porcelan but you get the idea, no stainless.
