If you already had the tools and know-how you'd probably break even.. maybe.

    • We bought a couple of these last year at the sale price. Pretty solid drawers. The hardware alone would probably run you $79

I don't think you could buy the hardware and veneer (never-mind the actual particle and press board you would need) for $79. Not to mention the time measuring/cutting/assembling.

I would assume that it is valid at all Ikeas. I received it in a flyer in mail in Brampton. No locations are mentioned and we don't even have an Ikea in Brampton. I don't believe that Ikea puts out regional flyers but I could be wrong.

That's only if you were dumb enough to actually go the veneer process.

I have a few of these dressers and they are JUNK. They fall apart easily, wound up wood gluing the screws and dowels.

The only difficulty lies in building square enough for the drawers to slide well. Most people wouldn't be able to do it without some woodworking experience. You could make one out of 1 sheet of 3/4" for the outsides and drawer faces, and 1 sheet of 1/4" or 1/2" for the drawer boxes. Add veener, paint, hardware, and you're well over $80 without the headache of making it. While these aren't plywood, it's much better for most DIYs to build with.

I have about 6-7 of these, in different sizes, and they've all held up very well even though they are stuffed and well used.

I have seen some pretty darn nice furniture made for free out of scraps.
It's just tools, time... mostly the interest.

If you were building this yourself, why would you ever use particle and press board? Generally speaking, without including the cost of tools, it is marginally more expensive to make your own product, much more so if you start adding those ridiculously priced handles. That being said, if you make it yourself, it will be 10x better and if you so desire, could last a lifetime. If you have right angle corners everywhere, its simple as heck to strip it, refinish it and voila, you have a new drawer every few years. Could always pop off and replace the faceplate for cheap if you really wanted to change the design. My dad and I are building our cabinets for our cottage and I plan to build my own dresser, end tables and head board afterwards. Its really not difficult to do once you have the tools, its just a question of whether you want to invest the time.

    • Did you know you can just go to the ikea exchanges / returns desk with the broken piece and they will replace it for you (often free of charge depending on the part). I broke a Malm drawer during my last move and they gave me an entire replacement drawer (face, sides, back, bottom) for $20.

I've had two for nearly 5 years now and they have held up through two moves and daily use. Nothing about either one is loose or falling apart. Perhaps you did not tighten the locking nuts enough.

Agreed!! Falls apart after a few years. Even their higher end stuff, all eventually fall apart. it's priced that way for a reason.

From the same flyer, kids also eat free Feb. 14 - 17. "After 11 am daily. While supplies last. Kids under 12 only. Limit one meal per child, per visit. See store for details." The flyers shows a meatball dinner. I guess I should add it to the Op. It looks like this is regional. Some flyers show the $2.99 meatball dinner and others show kids eat free. You can check your location's flyer here.

I have a handful of malm line items. Have lasted almost 10 years for a few items. I know they may not comparew to stuff 3 times the price but for the price I don't think you can find better imho. Compare apples to aples. A solkid, non-veneer, non partical board dress would run you much more most likely

Yup you should definitely use wood if you are doing this yourself. You might as well not waste a similar amount of your time to build something that may not last as long as real wood. Additionally, if you were to buy the same dresser made from finished wood, it should cost you a lot more than the cost of materials to construct it yourself. IKEA sells inexpensive furniture, and their market is usually satisfied with what they pay for.

    • I've had one of these drawers in white for over two years, still looks and works like new. It's a drawer, it sits there and holds stuff... I don't know how they would fall apart when they're static 99.99% of the time. Took me about an hour to assemble although lugging that 100 pound package up the stairs by myself almost ruined me.

    • +1.

My bed and dresser survived 3 years of use and 1 move. Still the exact same as day 1.
